Off-Campus Housing Options?

Hello,

I may be attending Texas Tech this Fall, but I am having difficulty planning the "logistics."

1) As it is very late in the process, on-campus housing may be limited or unavailable - I cannot see until I am officially admitted (late application - last minute plan changes). Furthermore, I may or may not be capable/willing to do so for multiple reasons (one of them being financial and the required expensive meal plan).

2) I also do not have a car, so it would be nice to be nearby a grocery store and/or direct access to public transportation. How do people get along without cars as students at Lubbock?

3) I require a by-the-semester or by-the-month lease. I have no off-campus/non-dorm rental history, and my would-be guarantor is low-income. However, I have a completely clean record at my previous dorms, have a credit history/record with zero negative items, an excellent academic record, and non-family references. I have applied for work-study, but since I am not yet admitted and have not yet received financial aid awards, I do not know if and what I will be rewarded, so I may begin with zero income.

4) Unfortunately, almost all the student-oriented off campus housing complexes have terrible online reviews at all the rating sites. A couple of them are even rated as 'F' by the Lubbock Better Business Bureau, while only one is rated A (though it still has terrible online reviews).

Is there anyone here that has previous or current experience (or has heard from others at Texas Tech) with off-campus housing options that might be appropiate for me? I have not ruled out the on-campus housing, but it would be very nice to have other options.

Thank you for any advice!

GoalsOriented, First congrats on attending Tech. It’s a big sometimes bureaucratic university but there are always Tech folks - Admin, faculty and fellow students - ready to help. Now to my first “off the cuff” recommendation re location - get your off-campus housing in West Overton (between downtown and the east-side of the University) within walking distance of the super Walmart. The West Overton off-campus apartments are relatively new (though sometimes lousy maintenance as your research shows). As one person you should be able to be a roommate in a multi-person apartment. The Super Walmart is perfect for students and has everything under the sun you’ll need. Just make it walking distance from your apartment and you should be in good shape. West Overton is also decent walking distance for wherever your freshman classes will be on campus. (If you were a Med or Law student with no car, West Overton is lousy but you’re not.) Unfortunately, I do not have the names of specific apartment complexes.
