I'm a little worried as a transfer applicant that I wont get any housing.. does anyone have any experience with this? If I dont get any on-campus housing, does anyone know of any close, good off campus housing? :)

It's not a question of whether or not there is good housing, it's more a question of whether you want to pay for it.

i'm not worried about the price as much as i am with the location.. i dont want to have to take a bus or drive in traffic for 30 minutes to go to class :(

Come up to Austin asap, look at a bunch of places, you'll be fine. I started looking off campus around February, found a good place in west campus for 850 a month by myself. And if you decide to wait until the Summer, you will still be OK because some of the huge nice places like the Block, Quarters, etc. have over developed and start selling 2 bedrooms for super cheap. Oh and if you decide to live in West Campus, I suggest you get a bike, the ride isn't too bad, and the travel time is equivalent to walking from Jester.

The co ops are also a possibility if you don't want to take on an apartment on your own (or move in as a roommate with strangers).

The Taos co-op at 2612 Guadalupe looks particularly nice and is just about as close to campus as Duren - just across the street, really.

Taos offers its members 17 hot, delicious home-cooked meals per week in its large communal dining room. Taos members also enjoy many educational and leisure time activities including intramural sports, co-op baseball (Taos is the home of the Mighty Corndogs Baseball Team) and camping.

You have to help out for four hours a week, but you get a single for $649 or a double for $499 and that includes 17 meals/wk, a stocked kitchen available 24/7, and all utilities. Maybe this form of somewhat communal living appeals to you. You'll definitely make friends quickly.

I was in the same position before this year. I decided to stay at dobie, its practically on campus and cheaper than west campus.

you guys are awesome, thanks a lot for the info. I wish i can come up but its hard to just fly out to austin by myself from new jersey :(

so the final verdict is, off campus housing will be available despite waiting until the summer? :)

For off campus dorms, there were still rooms in the Castilian available for fall this summer, I think.

This past year there was a surplus of housing in West Campus due to so many new apartments opening up (I believe The Quarters opened 3 new complexes, and others opened complexes too). I know the highest end apartment complex, Rio 21, is opening this fall, but am not sure what else is opening this fall. I wouldn't be surprised if there was still a surplus from all of the places that opened in fall '08.

There will definitely be rooms available in the summer. 1brs and efficiencies may get leased quicker than 2/3/4 br units.

Does anyone have like the top 5-10 best off campus dorming?

I'm guessing 1) Rio21?

thank you guys so much for helping out! i was really put off when i heard the traffic and housing was horrible :(

sorry for the double post haha

Rio 21 are apartments, which is different than dorms. Also, it doesn't look like they rent by the bed, so I doubt they roommate match (if you want roommates). I don't know if you are looking for roommates, but that's a great way to meet people.

There are a lot of sites that have information on apartments. Here is one example with the complexes listed on the left side:

Here's another:

UT apartments, West Campus apartments, Austin apartment locators

If you want a nice apartment you should get an apartment locator. They are completely free to use, and the apartments will pay their fee. If you are looking for a hole in the wall "hidden gem" then you may want to just look for yourself.

There are also some off-campus dorms which I am not familiar with.

Off campus dorms are generally all freshmen.
Apartments are off campus.

If you look around you can find really really cheap housing on a shuttle route. If you want to pay a little more you can get a nice apartment in West Campus.

It's generally much nicer than on-campus dorms and a better value. You will pay about the same price for more floor space.

It’s about 70% freshmen from my guess because they get a LOT of people that want to renew for a second or third year. It’s worth every penny.
Really when you see this place, its amazing. I live there now and this place is 1) the cleanest dorm on campus 2) the best food on campus 3) the best location – right smack in the middle (but across the street from campus).
You should know that there are a couple of bad posts about the Castilian on this board and others but go check this place out for yourself. You wont’ find a nicer staff anywhere and the maintenance of the place is top notch. The elevators are great. A couple years ago they had a heating issue that was fixed with all new equipment from what I hear - it just won’t happen again – what are the chances. Visit Dobie and its like a prison. Towers is like a dump. On campus is a guess – sometimes ok and sometimes not. I would live here again in a second.

Wow, Longhorndude!
I mean I live at the Castilian, and I really like it here. But it is not THAT great.

They should really hire you, if they didn’t already! I am not joking!

i’m a freshman and i’m living off campus at ballpark at riverside.

believe me, IT’S NOT THAT BAD.

i got my own bedroom and bathroom for $2,000 a whole year, and taking shuttle to school is like 15 mins.

Does anyone recommend any apartments? Anything good in terms of price for a 1 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment, convenient and safe location, fully furnished, etc?

^^^ And ditto for a studio unit.

Does anyone know if Galileo, Vintage West Campus, and Rio 21 are fully furnished?

Generally West Campus apartments and houses are not fully furnished, or indeed furnished at all. You bring everything you need outside of appliances.
