Off Campus Housing

Hey, for all those who currently attend UVA, about how far do you live off campus (if at all you do live off campus)? I'm looking at "University Place" Apartments which are really nice and affordable, but they are about 3 miles off campus. I'll be bringing my car, so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle, but do you think it would be better to live closer to campus? Is 3 miles considered "too far?" Being that I'm a transfer, I don't want to make it too hard on myself to meet new people, go to clubs, play some sports, etc. I was wondering if living 3 miles off campus would put me at a disadvantage?

Also, if you could provide any recommendations for closer off campus housing that would be great. I've been looking on brac.com and hoohasit.com. Thanks in advance.

there isn’t any parking on grounds, so you’d have to take a shuttle to and from class or walk the 3 miles to main campus every day.

places on JPA are good because of the trolley, and there is also bus service there as well as “the corner” - those are really the two spots for off grounds housing.

you can search to find more about transfer housing, but in summary: many people choose to live on grounds in gooch/dillard because so many transfers are there, though the housing itself is not very good.

I lived at University Place for 2 years. I really liked that it was affordable and provided shuttle service during class hours, but I felt “far” from the main social scene. The shuttle times change after 5pm and become less frequent and it stops at 10pm altogether and it does not run on weekends. Three miles may not seem far, but when parking can be difficult on Grounds, along JPA or near the Corner, you’ll wish you were a bit closer to the UVA bus line or the trolley line. Both have stops at the the intersection where JPA turns into JPA extended, but it is about a mile walk from there to University Place and it’s not exactly a pedestrian-safe mile. There’s a limited section with sidewalk along JPA and then there is barely even a shoulder on Old Lynchburg Rd.

Often times if I had evening activities or classes on Grounds I ended up driving and parking in the Main parking garage (but after 5pm when rates reduced)

Sudstar,
Hey glad again to hear that you are coming to UVA!! Your posts are so memorable.
But now, down to business.
Absolutely DO NOT live 3 miles from Grounds! Oh, and yes, I’ll be one of the first to correct you: we don’t say “campus”, it’s technically, “Grounds”>or “Mr. Jefferson’s Grounds” ^.^ So you will live “off-Grounds”.
I think the best places to live are right behind the Corner. I lived there last year, am living here this summer, and will be there come fall. It’s within walking distance to Grounds~~0.5 miles, maybe a tad more>>but it’s good exercise. I’d strongly recommend the next few places in no particular order: The “V”, Grand Marc, Venable, The Pointe and other housing around 13th and 14th street. I’ve been in each of these and they are all very nice and close enough to feel the student life and street vibe of Charlottesville. If you live 3 miles away, you’ll be so lonely and will have so much trouble parking you’ll be crazy or broke. These apartments offer parking and though it does cost $ or they give one spot for per apartment there are ways to work things out> PM me!

The Corner has it’s funky-Cavalier feel, but it’s so good and it’s UVA. You have waited so long to be here, so come here and live near Grounds and enjoy the spirit.

~powder

I know people that signed a contract just about 3 weeks ago at the apartment complexes that I mentioned above and were able to swing a deal to pay less than they were advertising. So, don’t go by what you might find on line>>call them up and try to swing a deal.
My roommates and I were able to swing a little deal for next year (not like the folks above), but you can win in this situation.
Do you have someone to room with? I know that each of the above places have options for someone who may need to either be placed with others or maybe deal for a place alone.
Good luck, let me know if I can help and I will as far as I can!

I have a friend who is also transferring to UVA who I am going to room with. Ideally, I want to live close to Grounds, but places like Grand Marc are too expensive. The “V” looks pretty good, as does “The Pointe” but I don’t know how I would go about finding a 3rd roommate, I’ve tried searching for roommates on Craigslist and it didn’t work out too well. Plus furnishing the entire apartment might be a tricky on a budget.

Thanks for the quick replies, I appreciate it. If you know of anyone who needs 2 roommates, let me know, I’d love to talk to them. Thanks again! :)

Sudstar, I’m also an incoming transfer and I may be looking for off-grounds housing. I’m still waiting to hear from housing, but apparently we’ll find out sometime during the first week of July. Have you tried posting on the transfer facebook page? There seems to be a lot of people looking for housing. A few people responded to my post, so you’ll probably have some luck there.

Congrats on getting in!

The “V” says it only has 3 or 4 room apartments, but I guess they had to turn some of the units into 2 room places. You can also negotiate the price there and also at the Grand Marc, places get desperate as fall nears. Good luck!

Any tips on how to haggle to get a lower price? I’m actually looking at Grand Marc again and was wondering if I could negotiate a lower monthly rent.

I’m in Rugby McIntyre, got a great deal and it’s not very far (behind Phi Society).
