Off campus housing

My son was accepted as an undergraduate transfer student. He has to decide whether or not accept within a few days. I would greatly appreciate any information about University Town Center and the other off campus housing options. The housing issue is important to us. Thanks for your help.

[University of Maryland - Off-Campus Housing](<a href=“University of Maryland | Your Home Away From Home”>University of Maryland | Your Home Away From Home)

Check that page out. Agree to the terms and browse through the housing options!

Note when the space is available…some will be summer subleases.

If you are finding too many options you can do an advanced search and narrow by distance from campus and price.

I also recommend diamondbackonline.com; in the classifieds there are frequently listings for apartments/homes. Google map the address to check distance from campus and the neighborhood out. However, if you will not be able to view/compare several properties before signing a lease, I would not recommend straying from apartment complexes. Some of the houses in which rooms are rented out in are in disrepair and owned by shifty landlords - though many are in great condition, you must see them for yourselves. In fact, some of the apartment complexes are not in great shape (see: a lot of Knox Boxes).

I would not recommend UTC - they are fine apartments and located near plenty of amenities like a mall, grocery store, and movie theatres (though many CP students consider PG Plaza, where they are located, to be “ghetto” - I would tend to disagree with this, but it’s really something you have to decide for yourself)), but they are not walking distance to campus. They are about 2-3 miles away, I would say - one stop on the metro or a quick (free) UM bus ride, though.

If you do a search of these (College Confidential) forums, narrowing to the UMCP subsection, you will find tons of threads breaking down the different housing options in a lot of detail. Check that out, too. They’ll explain options like UTC, The View, Parkside (and the other complex near it - the name escapes me right now), Knox Towers/Hartwick towers, etc. Lots of apartment complexes to choose from…but all quite steep in price!

Finally, if you have any questions about the safety/location of neighborhoods, feel free to PM or post back in this thread. I’ve been through the housing search and can help you out. We (my group of friends and I) also spoke to a police officer about comparative neighborhood safety, as well.

Thanks for the information.

The other complex which is near The Parkside is University Club, where my son (Freshman Conection program) will be sharing a studio with another friend that will be attending UMD. As The View was not accepting freshman, we looked at University Towers (Town Cneter), Parkside, and University Club. OFfall three, University Club was best by far, given that it is not far form campus, good security (Parkside we were able to walk right into a side door), great rec room, fitness room, and the UMD shuttle stops in front of the building approx. every 20 min. form 7 AMish to 3AMish. THeir website is universityclubatcollegepark.com
Good luck.
