Our son received a phone call from a local alum to set up an offcampus interview with him. He met with her over the weekend and thought the interview went well.

Should we read it as a positive sign if they chose to interview him?

Should we read it as a positive sign if they chose to interview him?

Did he apply early decision or regular?

Yes, it is a very good sign. That’s exactly what happened to my D last year. She was so surprised! That was a really nice touch. She applied RD but submitted her application in September of last year.

Assuming WashU does Interviews a similar way to all the other schools, it means nothing. Usually interview is offered but not required if there is an alumni available in the area. I believe interview is just one of those pieces in the puzzle. Not sure how much of a role it plays.

To those who didn’t get an interview request, don’t worry. My S was accepted without one.

I am an interviewer. Don’t take it as any sign positive or negative. If just means there’s an alum in your area who could interview him.

If it went well, that’s great. But I can tell you from experience that 90% of the interviews I’ve done went “well,” 5% bad, and 5% outstanding. Of the kids I interviewed last year, every single one of them was admitted. Quite frankly the interview very rarely sways a decision in either direction.

Just as a note to others who might be reading this though - don’t be an idiot and talk with your parent (in earshot of your interviewer) how you think “it went well, and it’s good practice for the schools I actually care about.” For real, I had someone say that not realizing I was nearby. It’s incredibly frustrating to volunteer your time and hear that (no matter if it’s true in your case at all).

He applied RD and submitted his application in early November.
