offers of an official visits and likely letters

Typing fast in case I am being timed out! Shorthand Q’s!:

No reference point, no Ivy OV’s done previously in Rowing program yet:

Heard: OV calendar for HW different than LW, HW goes into Nov, LW OV ends before 11/1 ED deadline as there are fewer LW colleges, and fewer LW HS rowers. Is this true?

Heard: Go to your FIRST Choice Last, that way you can commit (if offered) having done due diligence…???

That seems to be only in an IDEAL world; Liked IHS76 (thanks) comment about “end of recruiting dance” on the silence from my other Top Tier choices after having done the “finalizing my visit schedule, is there still interest?” email to them… Have ranked Top Tier 3, Middle Tier 3, Bottom Tier 2 college choices, but don’t want to risk all by waiting or sequencing! They (other Top tier choices that have gone silent) probably have a Pool B Waiting Room for after Pool A commit or do not…

Since there are only so many OV offers to go around; grab it if it is in your Top Tier and ignore the “5 OV’s” and the “First Choice School OV Last” advice, and GO FOR IT if lucky enough to be offered Likely letter support after OV?

Also: Don’t want to waste everyone’s time for other OVs not in choices, but don’t want to be rude…?

Thanks to theGFG, samurailandshark, fogfog, 3xboys, riverunner, OldBatesieDoc and others on this and similar thread!

Does any one know if UPenn has invited track athletes for OVs as yet? We are trying to gauge their interest. My son was asked to send material for a pre-read several weeks ago but then there has been no word since then.

Not generally. If your goal is a Likely Letter, you want to be able to use the EA/ED option to lock in admission early. IF someone has missed the EA/ED deadline and IF that someone is a very strong candidate, athletically and academically, and IF the school hasn’t filled their spot through the EA/ED process, then MAYBE that someone could get an OV in November and get a LL for the RD process. But that is a lot of IFs.

Usually you don’t get a lot of options as to when you go to an OV. You can move things around at the margins, but you often get what you get. In an ideal world going to your top choice school last is great if two other conditions hold true. 1) You are assured of an LL coming out of that visit. 2) You can reserve spots you have been offered at schools you have visited earlier in the process.

At this point, it sounds as if you really need to lock down some OVs. Do you have any scheduled? I would take a run at Penn, Columbia and Cornell NOW.
