Official visits?

I just got invited to one for rowing and I realize that the college pays for transportation, housing, food, etc.
I'm really excited because my friends say it's pretty serious and everything.
Now, I know I'm not going to be admitted to the school right away, but if I was given dates to do an official visit, should I feel, you know, special? Haha.

This is very good news. Depending on the school, about 1/2 of folks who go to OVs get a Likely Letter. If it is Harvard, it is extremely good news. Very few rowers get OVs and a majority of those that do end up getting admitted. If it is Penn, it is less good. The coach has invited many guys to OVs this year.

Give us specifics on the school. your erg time and academic accomplisments and we can be more helpful with feedback.

The school is UCSD.
I’m a senior:
3.9 gpa, want to be a bio major, flute for 7 years, 4th year of rowing, 2k: 8:15-8:16. I know my erg time is not the fastest but I had a back injury my 3rd year that caused me to not be able to compete until spring season.

OldScarecrow’s likely letter reference only applies to Ivy League schools. UCSD doesn’t issue likely letters, but they do recruit athletes. If the coach supports your application, you’re basically in.

Go on the OV, spend some time with the team and check out the rowing program and the college in general, and try to be on your best behavior.

The number of OVs a coach will offer relative to the number of slots they have to fill will vary by school and sport, so it’s hard to know just how “special” you should feel. But it is a very good sign.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone!

Good luck! Let’s us know how the OV goes.

I appreciate it very much!
