Official 2008 Oxford Thread!

I just got my rejection email this morning. I can't say I'm not devastated. :(.

me too Wizard, me too. sorry you're upset.. i'm sure you'll have tons of other schools to look forward to, your grades are stellar.

i think i'm going to go to UCL or maybe LSE if i get off the shortlist. i'm a bit relieved about Oxford.. i wanted to be in London anyway. good luck with the rest of your applications :)

I'm sorry to hear that. I was completely crushed when I got my accidental rejection.

Hey guys, sorry to all who are disappointed. It's been really great to know that there are so many fantastic people applying.

I know this isn't going to be much help to you right now, but just remember that you can get a fantastic education ANYWHERE - the boundaries that confine you are the ones YOU make, not the ones the world makes for you.

Big hugs to everyone, and keep smiling!

Got in...but I hate my college (St Anne's; got screwed by open app). Definitely not attending. Good luck to the rest of you!

I got in to Worcester!!!! OMG I am sooo excited!

I plan to major in Medicine. YIPEEEE!!!! Good Luck to everyone else.

From NYC here, heading to Oriel next fall to do Theology.

Any other NYCers/Oriel/Theology people?

Please tell me everything you know about Christ Church. I got in but I don't know much about how it compares to the other Oxford colleges (it's beautiful of course, but how about its reputation of being "aristocratic" for instance).

if you want to see more about Christ Church then go to www. the student room .co.uk (w/out spaces). Then look up Oxford pros and cons - they have all the ups and downs of each college.
hope this helps.

Parisian, one of my best friends is at Christ Church - she did her BA there, then her MSt., and now she's doing her DPhil there too so it must have something going for it ;)

The 'aristocratic' thing is true to an extent, but obviously it's not the whole story. Oxford generally is more 'aristocratic' than other places, and certainly Christ Church has its fair share. But there are also plenty of 'normal people' at ChCh too - in fact, I would say that almost everyone I've ever met from ChCh has been 'normal', which is not the case for some colleges I could name. (Cough Magdalen cough) ;)

Tbh, the whole 'aristocratic' thing is very exaggerated. Sure, there are rich, posh people at Oxford. But I have never ever met anyone who has mocked me because I don't play polo and go skiing every Christmas, or because I'm not related to the Queen! Those people are the minority, and not even a significant one.

ChCh con: tourists. be prepared to be mobbed; tourists will even find their way into your dorm. yuk.

imo you'll only find substantial differences if you look for them.

an oxford college is an oxford college is an oxford college

Thanks for the information -- would you also happen to know the chances of getting into a US ivy league graduate school after Oxford? Do people do that? Because this is REALLY what I want to do.

Just a guess, but I would say it would depend on the class of your degree (ie, graduating with a First vs. a 2:1 vs. a 2:2 vs. a 3rd class honours.) But if you did well at Oxford, I see no reason why you shouldn't be just as competitive an applicant at good American schools. For some disciplines, I wonder (and this is just conjecture, here) if the intensity and strict, narrow focus/specialization of a UK school like Oxford would better suit you for the kind of intensive independent research a graduate degree would require.

Just wondering, Parisian, where in Paris are you from? I used to live on Rue Dauphine...

the chances of getting into ivy league for grad after oxford are much higher than getting into oxford for grad after ivy league.

Congratulations, everybody who got in :). And for the rest of us, we'll end up somewhere fantastic anyhow, I'm sure.

Yeah i got rejected.had applied for ppe.couldnt go for interview.will apply again next year.any advice from a ppe guy.or anyone for tht matter.

Ugh; I STILL haven't received my Oxford decision letter. It's driving me insane.

izzywizzy, it's weird that you didn't get your Oxford decision letter. You might want to call them. My niece applied, she got her notification around the 15th of December.

I just got the acceptance from Sydney Sussex, Cambridge for medicine today, and I'm too excited to bother seeing if there's a Cambridge thread on here.
