Official 2008 Questbridge National College Match Discussion and Help

mwhtw- That, I don't know. They don't put much weight on the QB application is my understanding. I remember I reused a couple of my QB application essays in the Common App and the schools accepted/ kind of seemed to encourage it (I think QB mentions reusing essays in the FAQ but not too sure). But yeah, for schools that required the Common App, I just assumed they don't look over QB app.

Jakor,
so for top tier schools, QB may not be that big of an advantage, except for possibly the title of being a finalists. am i correct?

This has probably be answered in the thread already, but if you apply to QB, you cannot apply EA to any other school, right?

After reading some of the RD policies of the schools, some of them say you can't use the QB application at all (such as Princeton), so this means that your QB application is not seen at all,and is not carried into the RD round, yet somehow you are still seen as a QB applicant when you apply separately with the common application?
No, they don't say you can't use the QB app; they simply require that you submit an additional application or supplement. QB still forwards your application to them, and some, if not all, will use it in conjunction with the additional app they require. It's unclear, though, how each school weights each app.

Also, it's easily visible that you are a QB finalist if you put that on the additional application.

Jakor is right on all the points, except that you are not able to revise the application after you have submitted it on September 30th (at least, this is always how it's been in the past, and I doubt they'd change it this year).

my question is does it sound bad to do this b/c i dont wanna write to make it seem like im getting shot at by drug dealers etc but those essays are the ones i think i could write best and i think they would be strong.
No, that sounds like a great topic. The essays are such that you are able to elaborate on the context that you've grown up in and the adversities you've faced. And since you can write them candidly and make them strong essays, they are the perfect topic for the QB essays. As Jakor said, emphasize the effect it had on you.

so if you're applying to stanford or the ivies, and you end up having it fowarded to RD, the schools will only know whether u were a QB finalist or not. they will not see the QB app at all? thats wat it seems to be
They will definitely know whether you're a finalist or not, but from what QB has told me, they also have access to your QB app. To what degree they use it, we don't know. FWIW, some of my admissions officers from Stanford wrote me notes on my letters commending me for an essay that was not on the Common App, but on the QB app.

That's correct.

Kyledavid, will you edit and comment on my QUESTBRIDGE essay?

mwhtw- The major advantages of applying to the top schools through QB (assuming Finalist) would be:

The QB finalist status (=more grant aid at some schools like MIT)

No application fees (big plus for me)

Being able to apply to multiple top-tier schools early and knowing your acceptance by December 1st (plenty of time to revise for RD; very nice when your friends are worrying from January through March about admit decisions)

Hi everyone!

Thanks for your feedback on whether I should apply to QB. I have decided to go for it! :)

I have started working on the application and have some questions.

1) Do we send our SAT scores directly to Questbridge? (My high school doesn't have them).

2) Do we have an official copy of our transcript sent to Questbridge from school?

3) There is a financial profile from College Board that many of the schools I am looking at require. Should I begin to process that now since I require a non custodial parent waiver now anyway?

4) In cases of documentation like the non custodial parent waiver, do we mail those to Questbridge?

5) Do we submit the application along with all the required documentation at the same time?

and, I promise this is it (this post) ;)

6) I need to take SAT subject tests on October 4th. Obviously I won't have time to submit those with my application. Can I just explain that on my application?

Thanks! I'm glad we are all here to support one another! Good luck!
No, you don't send your SAT score directly to QB (as in, not from the College Board). If your high school does not have them, you must provide them with them. From the Application Instructions:
Print off a copy of the fax coversheet to be submitted with your official transcript and standardized test score reports from the “My Locker” section of the website. Give the coversheet to your counselor or guidance office and request that they use it to fax your transcript and score reports to
QuestBridge by September 30, 2008. If your counseling office does not have standardized test score reports on file, please provide them to your counselor. Either an official test score report or a printout from the testing agency’s website will suffice.

<a href="http://www.questbridge.org/ncm/application_instructions.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.questbridge.org/ncm/application_instructions.pdf</a></p>

He/she will then send your scores to QB by fax, along with your transcript.

2) Do we have an official copy of our transcript sent to Questbridge from school?
Yes. See above.

3) There is a financial profile from College Board that many of the schools I am looking at require. Should I begin to process that now since I require a non custodial parent waiver now anyway?
I would recommend you start on the CSS profile as soon as you can. It's rather lengthy. However, for now, you can focus on your QB application, since the CSS profile won't be due until early November (when the rest of the documents are due to the partner colleges).

I submitted my non-custodial fee waiver from QB, but not the one from the CSS profile (I didn't think they would need two); all was fine.
4) In cases of documentation like the non custodial parent waiver, do we mail those to Questbridge?
I believe you submit them directly to the colleges you're ranking (by fax). The application should have instructions on what to do.
5) Do we submit the application along with all the required documentation at the same time?
For the QuestBridge application, you need to submit it and all the required documentation for it (transcript, scores, recommendations, etc.) by September 30th. The required documentation for the colleges you rank isn't due until early November.
6) I need to take SAT subject tests on October 4th. Obviously I won't have time to submit those with my application. Can I just explain that on my application?
You can. I don't think SAT subject tests will have much of an impact, if at all, when QB chooses finalists. You'll need to have them submitted to the colleges you rank, of course, by the deadline, so I would recommend you include them in the 'score report' section when you sign up for the SAT.

Test Scores

Wait, I thought the standarized test scores were self reported? So does that mean if I have taken the SAT already and received my scores in the letter I can use that as proof to send to QB?

Second, if I am going to take the September 13 ACT, will I have enough time to get my scores back and send them to QB?

Teacher/GC Reccomendations

Since it says on the Stanford QB FAQ that we need to send in our reccomendations again if we become finalists, does that mean I need to ask my teachers/GC to write separate reccomendations for QB and the partner colleges?

I mean since the length of time between finding out you are a finalist and sending in your common app. is a mere one week.

Also, are the QB recommendation forms similar to the common app. ones?

Thanks a lot kyledavid80!

P.S. I forgot to tell you when I sent you my essay that I have Microsoft Word.
You do self-report scores, but for verification, your counselor needs to fax in something more official. That can be an official score report, a print-out from the CB site, or the letter you get from the College Board. Make a copy of it and give it to your counselor so that he/she can fax it when he/she faxes your transcript in.
I'm not sure on this one--you'll have to check the score notification dates (the ACT site should have them); as long as it's before the 30th, it'll make it to QB.
Yes, you'll have to get the recommendation forms from the Common App site and give them to your teachers; tell them that they're basically the same recommendation, so it's not 2x the work.

Yes, that's why you should give the forms a few weeks early and tell them that you'll let them know whether you're a finalist, in which case they should submit them. (That's what I did, though I don't think it would hurt if they were to submit them before you find out your finalist status.)

Thanks kyledavid80! This makes so much more sense now! =)

One more question XD

Since I'm ranking 5 schools on my QB app, should I give both the QB and the Common reccomendation forms to my teachers at once, or should I wait a week and then give them the Common one?

Thanks!

Either works. I gave mine to them at separate times, but now that I think about it, it might've been more convenient for them to just fill out both recommendations at the same time. They were fine with it, though. Of course, the recommendation due dates are about a month apart, so I didn't want them to submit the Common App ones until I found out I was a finalist. I don't think it would've hurt if they submitted earlier.

Thank you for sharing all your advice with us KyleDavid!! (even if you are a cardinal through and through) ;)

My guidance counselor told me she never received my SAT scores. I called College Board and was told it would take 4-6 weeks (I swear!) to arrive by mail. After my mini-panic attack, I asked if it were possible to have the scores sent directly to QuestBridge. QuestBridge is one of their listed recipients. Can I do that instead? Can I have it done before I submit the application to be sure it arrives by the deadline date?

If I list more than one school and they require common applications/additional recommendations do I have the teachers fill out a separate recommendation form for each of them?

Thanks!

tsprite- The initial QB application isn't too strict about the official documentation. If you still have the score sheet mailed to you by CB after you took the SAT, I don't see why that wouldn't be satisfactory. Also, for the additional common app recs, just have your teachers fill out one Common App and make copies as needed (have them keep it on file, just in case!).

I'm going to go for it but I have a concern: will the November SAT get to the colleges in time to be considered? Or is October the last acceptable date?

Well, you don't need to go through all that trouble. Just go on College Board's site, print off your scores page, and give that to your counselor to fax in. As the application instructions say:

Unfortunately, the last acceptable test date for the Match round is in October; otherwise, your scores would come too late for the colleges you rank to see.
