The school found my SAT scores! Yay!! A small victory I know but one none the less.

I found my rank today was only top 19% (92 out of 478). Most of the schools I looked at generally accepted between 5-10%, so I feel I may be out of my (Ivy) league here. My guidance counselor explained even though I am a straight A student, there are many high performing students in my class along with the fact that I didn't get a chance to take any AP classes until this year. Will QB take that into consideration? Will the schools?

On the QB teacher recommendation form, under the student name it states:

"recommendation waiver - I hereby waive or do not waive my right of access to my recommendations"

Should my teacher fill that out, or should I?

Also -

On the common app where do I find the teacher recommendation forms? I thought I'd print those and put them in the folders I have for teachers writing recommendations for QB now.

Thanks!

Found the teacher recommendation forms.

Sorry to ask so many questions! Thanks for all the help!

:)

Yes, they will. You might even make a special note of it in the additional info.

"recommendation waiver - I hereby waive or do not waive my right of access to my recommendations"

Should my teacher fill that out, or should I?
You're the one to fill that part out, but you are not required to waive your right there. I would advise that you do; that's what colleges and such expect to see, I think, and it allows your teacher to write more candidly about you.

Does someone have a list of which schools are binding and which are not? Through the FAQs I found that Yale, Princeton, UChicago, and Stanford are not binding. Columbia is. Anyone know the other schools, particularly UPenn?

(I apologize if this was already posted earlier in the thread. But it's 25 pages and everything)

Edit:

I have not taken any subject tests yet, but I will in October, which QB says is fine. But I also want to take a language test, which is only offered in November, and the deadline for scores for the colleges is like 2 days after the tests are offered. Should I take the language test anyway?

^ I think UChicago is binding, Notre Dame is non-binding

BTW - how influential is being accepted to the Williams visiting program on actual admissions into Williams?

UChicago binding? Hm. The UChi website said that it treated QB as Early Action, which I thought was unbinding?

Unfortunately I don't know much about Williams.

Only Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Notre Dame, and MIT are non-binding. The rest are binding.

You can take the language test for the RD round (in case you don't get matched, or in case you still want to try other colleges after being matched to a non-binding partner school), but unfortunately it won't be in time for the Match round. Thus, it won't be considered if you take it in November.

However, are you sure you can't take the language in October along with the other subject tests (if you're not already planning on taking 3)? Although language subject tests with listening are only offered in November, you can still take the written-only language subject tests and it would be fine. (I've never heard of a college preferring the listening ones. None of the QB partners specify this.)

Definitely take the subject tests in October, though, if they're required or recommended for the schools you plan to rank/apply to. They won't make it to QB in time when they evaluate students for finalist status, but they won't have an impact. (QB does not require any specific scores/tests in deciding which students become finalists.)
I don't know of any statistics on this, but from what I was told before, well over half of those accepted to the Amherst visitation program were ultimately accepted to Amherst (I think it was something like two thirds, but don't quote me on that). The case may or may not be the same (or even similar) for Williams.

I am so excited about applying. I come from a low-income family and although my heart is with NYU, I know that any one of those top tier universities on my short list (I believe it's 8?) would suit me well. HOWEVER, in the case that you get matched with a school you ultimately REALLY don't wanna go to..is there a way to break the contract? I don't plan on doing this but, it's good to know!

ThExoticOne, I'm glad to see that you're excited about the program--it really is great. :)

Well, the only schools that you aren't bound to attend if matched to are Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Notre Dame, and MIT.

Otherwise, that's why they tell you not to rank any school unless you're 100% sure you would want to attend if matched to it.

I'm pretty sure UChicago is nonbinding, but maybe I'm just hoping it is. I love the school and would be happy to go there if matched but the word "binding" scares me a little. The language test I'm taking is only available in November. Thanks for answers/advice, KyleDavid!

According to QuestBridge, U Chicago's offer is binding.
The UChi website said that it treated QB as Early Action, which I thought was unbinding?
Perhaps they mean that you are considered along with all the other early action applicants and are notified early (a basic characteristic of early action).

U Chicago's site says:
Matched finalists will receive their notification from QuestBridge by December 1.
and then goes on to say:
All unmatched QuestBridge finalists who rank the University of Chicago in their top eight and who apply for admission by November 1 will receive an Early Action decision from the university in mid-December.
Perhaps they mean that in addition to hearing from QB on December 1, applicants will get a formal notification in mid-December from U Chicago itself. Last year, when students were matched or not, those who ranked U Chicago also found out their decisions when all other QB applicants did.

Why not shoot QuestBridge an email (questions at questbridge.org)? I'm sure they'd be happy to clarify. :)

the recommendations are so confusing.

In the QB recommendation instructions, it says,
"In addition to filling out the recommendation online, we strongly encourage you to fax us a school profile if it is available. Please use the fax coversheet in the "My Locker" page to send us the profile. (This fax cover sheet is necessary because it contains a barcode which will automatically attach the profile to your online recommendation.)"

My guidance counselor finished the online recommendation, but she still has to fax a school report and cover sheet? What are these and where can I find them? Is is the document that you can access by clicking "Print Form" under the recommendation module? Or is it the transcript document that you access by clicking "Fax Cover Sheet" at the bottom?

And what does it mean when it said, "fax us a school profile IF IT IS AVAILABLE." Is the school profile that they're talking about the one they have (the "Print Form" one) or is it provided by the school?

Sorry. I'm just really confused. haha

I received this email from the QB team:

The last testing dates for which QuestBridge can accept results are October 4 for the SAT I and II, and September 13 for the ACT. There is a question on the application that you can use to indicate if you took the September ACT or will be taking the October SAT.

When you receive your new score report from tests taken on these dates, please submit the scores to QuestBridge through your 'My Locker' page. You should ask your high school counseling office to fax your score reports to QuestBridge using the 'Transcript & Test Scores' fax cover sheet available on your 'My Locker' page. If you are planning to take the October 25 ACT, you may send the scores directly to the colleges, but be aware that they may not arrive in time to be considered in admissions decisions.

If you are selected as a National College Match finalist, you will need to send official score reports to the colleges that you rank. Refer to the National College Match requirements page for instructions regarding submission of test scores to colleges.

when you "Save & Continue" essays, they're not being officially submitted, right? everything else on the application needs to be completed as well first, yes?

hey,

i have been thinking about my essays and ive started thinking about filling out the qb app. however, im not sure if im eligible for the match program. currently i am not a citizen or a greencard holder but my app. is in the process. does anyone know if i am still eligible? and if im not is it still worth applying to because it means i wont even have a chance to become a finalist? i know that whole thing about the guy from williams admissions saying "qb applicants are put in a priority bin" or w/e but does that apply to qb applicants who are not even finalists. i plan on applying regardless of my status but would being a qb applicant (not a finalist) help for rd as opposed to applying rd w/o qb? sorry for the question im sure its been asked before.
The school report just tells them about your school--the grade system, the calendar system, how grades are weighted (if at all), what courses are offered, etc. You'll need to fax the cover sheet and then the school report. The cover sheet can be found on the 'My Locker' page.

As for the school report, there are a few options: look for it on the application (I can't remember whether it was on there); if it isn't there, send QB an email asking about it; if they expect your school to provide one, ask your counselor if they have any generic school reports.

Not all schools have school profiles that they send out; notice that it isn't required, but strongly recommended.

I'm not sure about the 'print form' and other options on the application, which I don't have access to, sorry. If you're really confused, just shoot QB an email; they're there to help on these sorts of matters. :)

That's correct. There's a final 'submit' button at the end of the application; it's just more convenient to save your progress, so that you can come back to it later and not have to start all over.

You are eligible for the Match process. However, the only schools that consider international students for the Match round are Yale and Princeton.

You are eligible to become a finalist, but even if you don't, I tihnk the QB application can be advantageous for the RD round in that it gives you more room to elaborate on yourself--more essays and such.

My question is this: should the biography essay be tackled as an essay that is a summary about most of your life, or more refined to a specific moment?

does anyone know....
If we are not matched, I know that everyone is given the option of forwarding applications, but can we also fix up those apps before they are re-sent?

And another question--- can a person who ranks zero schools be designated as a "QB Finalist"? I know that sort of defeats the purpose, but just being designated as a "finalist" is extremely awesome. Since most of the schools are binding (or virtually binding), I don't want to feel bad if I get matched to a non-binding school but decide that i dont want to attend (conversely, i dont want to feel extremely depressed when i DONT get matched haha)
