Official 2008 Questbridge National College Match Discussion and Help

thanks. i finally got it to work.

i have some questions regarding recommendations. i know that it is recommended 3 weeks for recs, which i gave to my teachers and counselor, but in my locker the status for recs is still "not started", so i just wanted to know how many items do they actually need to fill out? just one letter or are there other parts they need to do? can it essentially be done in about a week?

Hi Sophian!

If you click on the form next to their name you can see what it is they need to fill out.

Don't feel badly - I have one teacher and my guidance counselor that I gave the information to almost a month ago and neither one of them has started it! The other teacher - bless her heart - had it done within one week!

It's nerve wracking when you are waiting on someone else to do something kwim?

ah, yes. thank you. i totally neglected to see that.
the deadline is coming up so soon it's VERY nerve wracking. my essays still need to be finished..

Sophian -

I have one essay (plus polish the 800 word one), and the questions remaining, so I am stressed also.

Between school, my ECs and working 25 hours a week, I barely have time to sleep!! To add to all that, I had a packet (with recommendation and ANOTHER essay) that needed to be in for National Honor Society this past Tuesday! (College will be a piece of cake after senior year! LOL) ;)

To everyone -

I went to a Princeton information session on Tuesday night. The Admissions Assistant Director stressed the essay reflect who you are. Even though it was for RD, he pointed out that a well-rounded applicant (not necessarily perfect scores, dozens of ECs or AP classes, etc.) was what they were looking for. This is what Kyle was telling us throughout this thread. I believe most schools will want the same thing. They want applicants who will bring their unique selves to their campuses to contribute to an interesting atmosphere and student body. :)

Is there any exception for the due date for the recommendation letters? I live near Galveston. Because of the advent of Hurricane Ike, my school has been off since September 9th and is going to remain closed until September 29th.

*Is it possible to skip the College Match portion, and only apply for the RD process? *

I ask this because while I've asked teachers for recommendations for my regular college applications (due around October 10th), I'd completely forgotten about the Teacher Recommendation portion of the QB application. Is giving them about a week to write the recommendations realistic?

MichaelaW: As I understand your question, you are asking if you can send to QB your teacher recs later than 9/30 if you are not interested in doing the match portion. The answer is no. Everything to QB must be in on 9/30, period, no matter what you want to do next with their program.

Can a teacher do a rec in a week? Frankly, the actual time it takes for a teacher to do a rec is probably about 2 hours. The issue is about them finding 2 hours to set aside and do it. Good luck.

If a teacher and guidance counselor do not submit the recommendations by a certain date (I'm targeting the 24th/25th) can we change the recommenders name and try to get someone else to do it?

I have one teacher who got hers in within 10 days - the other one and guidance counselor have had them since the 20th of August and nothing. I have written a "reminder" last week and this week but still nothing.

What can I do?

I'm very sorry I haven't been posting! If I haven't gotten your essay back, I'm sorry about that too--I've gone through about 10-15 essays, and life has been very hectic of late (haven't had internet for a few days). Keep working on your essays (writing, editing, etc.) even if I haven't gotten it back to you yet--don't wait on me. I promise I'm going to try to get them all done this weekend.

Hope everything's going well! :)

I'm really stressing out! I keep typing my short answers and saving them, but when I come back to them, they disapppear! What do I do? Anyone else having this problem? Help!

i had the same problem. i think you need to put something in every field for the anything to be saved. so even if you haven't answered a question, just type something and go back to edit it later.

if that doesn't work, just save your complete answers in a separate document as you work on them, and when you finish all of them, transfer your answers into the boxes.

That's what I did, but it still doesn't work. Is there a number I could call? I already sent QB an email, but I'm afraid they won't answer it in time.

QUESTION:
I received an "invite" letter in August and just assumed I didn't qualify financially. Our family is not considered low - income as far as I can tell. I just got a reminder email from Questbridge to start my application so I'm starting to wonder if I am making a mistake by not applying. What if I apply but I find out I am not considered low income? My parents have no idea about all these CSS/FAFSA forms yet.

Does it hurt to apply and then find out you are not low income?

From the Questbridge website:

<a href="http://www.questbridge.org/cmp/criteria.html#Financial%5B/url%5D">http://www.questbridge.org/cmp/criteria.html#Financial</a></p>

Financial Criteria

The National College Match is designed for students who come from families experiencing economic challenges.

Some of the factors we use to assess financial need include:

Annual household income: Most National College Match scholarship recipients have come from households earning less than $60,000 annually. If you come from a household earning more than this amount but still feel that you have faced economic hardship, there is room on the application to explain your situation.

Additional information about household circumstances such as:

Number of people in the household.

The cost of living in your area.

Other financial commitments, such as medical bills or support payments to family members outside the United States.

To Littlebell:

I think you should call Questbridge and explain the circumstances regarding your school closing due to Ike. Perhaps they can work with you on other arrangements.

Hope you and your family are safe.

Good luck! :)

I need help with my essays!

I have the topics and general idea/outline for what I'm going to write about.

my bio essay will be about how I moved around a lot because of the nature of my dad's work, and how that helped me see different people and different worlds. Right now, I'm studying in the States alone, while all my family are in my native country. (I am a US citizen though..)

diversity essay:
since I'm a "foreign" student, I've been to lot of events where I could introduce/share my native country with others. I also demonstrated swordsmanship in one of my language clubs.

significant experience:
I will talk about the event 3years ago that was emotionally hard for me. It made me think about true meaning of life, and what I was to do from this point on. This event was a big part of the reason why I chose to study in US alone.

I chose all three topics b/c I felt these really show who I am. But I realized none of them were "intellectual."
Should I consider changing one of the short essay topics?
But I don't think I could write a more "true" essay with intellectual topic...
I could write about how I took "English as Second Language" class my sophomore year(first year in US) and am taking AP classes including AP English... but even that would be more of a personal experience......

what should I do?
write something that shows why I want to study a certain area?

I dunno........
I know the deadline is real close, but I want to make sure to write an essay that shows the true me.......
help !!!

That's just it: write an essay that "shows the true [you]." Why do you feel the need to write an "intellectual" essay? I think the ideas you have are great. I'm sure your writing alone will show your intellectual side (just try not to sound too stuffy, fluffy, and arrogant...just be direct and to the point).

Anyone know a help number for QuestBridge you can call with questions or problems?

it was only a few posts up
