Official 2008 Questbridge National College Match Discussion and Help

haha that's awesome GA2012MOM! thanks for the information. did you get the call from the specific school on December 1st or before/after?

ahhhhh I can't wait!! Hope everyone gets selected!

stasis, D got her call from a QB staffer, not her school. I think most got it that way, but I did read that somebody the year before got their call from the actual, school, Trinity I believe. The call last year I believe was scheduled for November 30th, and D got hers at 4:57 p.m. Yes, we remember the EXACT time. :)

Hi everyone!

I just have a quick question- do you think it's a good idea to replicate the questbridge personal essay to send to the colleges? I'm personally thinking of sending the personal essay as well as another one that I've recently written just so that they fully understand my situation. Am I being redundant in doing this?

Do colleges even read the personal essays?

unefille:
yes, most colleges dont even look at QB application besides that ur finalist status.

I read on this site that princeton doesn't look at your questbridge application? What other colleges DON'T read the QB app?

My Update Scores link disappeared...did anyone else's? Is this a bad sign?

I did not know QuestBridge, and it is now too late.

Do you know of any other programs that do something like this? I need the free application to top colleges since my family is low-income.

Thanks.

jess0990, if you are AA, Asian, Native American or Hispanic, you can apply for the Gates scholarship at gmsp.org.

That does not apply to me. Anything else?

Hey do you guys know if finalists only get matched if their efc is zero? cause that's what penn and a couple other schools seemed to be implying on their scholarship package page on QB's website.

Also, does anyone know if Penn reads the QB app?

Thank you guys for the helpful comments!

I have recently encountered a different problem though: for some reason, when I logged into the my locker page, I could no longer find the "update your scores" link under "my application". Has this happened to any one else???

most colleges would probably not spend the extra time looking over all the short responses and essays of the QB application. i suggest that you reuse your good QB essays.

@unefille, me too!

Here's a question: Do you get contacted if you do NOT make finalist? Do you get contacted if you make finalist but do not get matched? See, if they simply failed to contact a person, I could understand that person thinking that, perhaps, an affirmative e-mail got lost in cyberspace, or a phone call was made to a wrong number. Just like official college rejections, there certainly should be official QB finalist and match rejections, but I haven't heard anything about such a thing.

4th house, I do not know about contact if you do not make finalist. If you are a finalist, but not a match, they will send you an e-mail the day of the match announcements. I advise everybody to check your junk mail as well as I remember last year several people getting e-mails there instead of their inbox. The non match e-mails came out later in the evening, peoples stress levels I recall were extremely high!

okay i have a rather complicated question if anyone could help asap that would be amazing...

so if we become a finalist, do we submit EA/ED apps to all our ranked schools? That's what I got from reading the website...correct me if I am wrong. Then, are we notified of all the schools we were accepted into in December?
For example, Yale is my first choice and Columbia is my second, and (a huge if here) if they both accept me, I will be matched with Yale, right? However, since Yale is nonbinding, do I still have the option to choose to go to Columbia? The reason why I am asking this is because Columbia and Yale are both amazing to me, and it was so hard to rank my top two schools.

Another thing is....is it a disadvantage to apply as an international student (visa living in US) for questbridge? I received the college prep scholarship....

Regarding submitting "ED/EA apps" to your ranked schools: check each school's policy as listed on the QB site. For example, I believe Yale states clearly that you are supposed to indicate on their common app and supplement that you are applying reg. decision, even though, technically, you are not. QB isn't really EA or ED; it's a special program onto itself.

As to your hypothetical, if you are matched with your first choice, you will NEVER EVER KNOW if you also got matched to your second or third or whatever. You will ONLY know you got matched to the highest school you ranked that also ranked you.

So, what do you do if you are matched to, say, your first choice, but it is non-binding and you want some more time to decide? All you do is tell QB that you want to still have them send along your other app(s) -- in your case, Columbia, under your hypothetical. Also check the QB school-specific website. In some cases, you also have to e-mail the school to let them know you want to be considered for RD there.

I'm not so sure about some of the schools I ranked because at the time I thought it would be best to use the Questbridge opportunity to my full advantage and rank 8 schools. Would it be okay to simply not send supplements to the schools that I'm not positive about going to, since the matches are binding? It doesn't seem like they would be able to do anything if my supplements aren't in by Nov. 3rd...
