@CollegeBound – I always reference my documents in a way (in both APUSH and AP Lang) that my teachers seem to love:

The key is to use the document to support your main idea. Your goal is not to write an essay summarizing the documents. Your goal is to write your essay using the collection of documents as possible pieces of evidence. You can pretend that you’re a lawyer and you have several pieces of evidence. You need to convince the jury that xyz happened. You first construct your argument, and then implement the evidence (the documents) to support that.

Example: (Say your prompt is to analyze the shift in the North’s view of slavery and your document is an excerpt from “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”)

Anti-slavery sentiment became extremely intense in the North around the third quarter of the 19th century. Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” (Doc. A) strengthened the north’s opposition to slavery and became the second best-selling book, after the Bible by portraying life as a slave.

The first sentence is YOUR main idea. The use of the document goes on to support that main idea.

oh crap, multiple choice being 60% would’ve been much nicer. thanks whoever answered!

@collegebound41, i always do the (Doc X). thing at the end of the sentence that i quote or refer to a document in. i would argue that it’s the best way to do it, considering that readers are going to be flying through your dbq. make it as obvious as you can that you used the majority/all of the documents as possible. you can still refer to a document by its title if it makes sense to, but i would still cite it at the end for the sake of consistency.

also: can anyone run over the bare minimum key points from nixon-reagan? i don’t have a review book and i know literally nothing about anything past lbj… if anyone could go over major policies/acts/whatever i’ll love you forever.

That part about the Bible is unnecessary and awkward. How about something like, “Stowe’s wildly popular novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin galvanized support for abolition in the North through its depiction of the brutal realities of the South’s ‘peculiar institution’.”

Nixon: detente, Vietnamization, Kent State, secret bombings of Cambodia, reduced government spending due to beginning of stagflation, Watergate

Ford: US involvement in Vietnam ends, Helsinki Accords with USSR, pardons Nixon, terrible economy

Carter: Iranian Revolution, SALT II, hostage crisis, Camp David Accords, Olympics boycott, oil crisis, terrible economy (stagflation)

Reagan: conservatism, lower taxes, smaller government, military buildup, Reaganomics (supply-side, trickle down, deregulation), SDI/Star Wars, Iran-Contra, “evil empire”/increased tension with USSR

Even better. However, my point was not to give an example of how to write, but rather how to subtly reference the document.

I only mentioned its being the best seller second to the Bible because when I decided to give an example, I flipped to a random page in the Crash Course book in my lap and that was one of the key points listed.

thanks for the social gospel responses guys =) You’ve cleared it up for me! Just got a 61/80 on my next practice test, woot! 6/6/6 for a 5, here I come! (lol, or, probably not.)
This is probably my last time posting for tonight, so, good luck to everyone! Fives around!

If I get a 70-75% on MC, how crappy can I do on the essays and still pull a 4?

Thank you Mass… That helped a lot… I’m gonna keep staring at it until it’s engraved into my memory!

@Greed: Use [AP Pass - AP Test Calculators, Study Guides, and Resources](http://www.appass.com)

dizzying i feel the same way about the readers flying through. thanks!

Is there a secret phrase or whatever for this year’s test, like one that you work into your essay from pop culture and then cross it out? The past couple years its been like why so serious and we are Sparta. I haven’t seen this year’s one though, does anyone know?

Yayyy. I’m s-cited for tomorrow. I’m reading PR - I just started studying today. lulz. My teacher has beening giving us practice exams (I don’t know what years they’re from) and I scored 68, 73, and 78% (lastest) on them without review. I am also a DBQ/FRQ master (I love history). Needless to say, I felt a bit cocky/secure, which is why I’m cramming now >___<. I need to learn all the stuff past WWI really well in case there is a DBQ/FRQ, because I checked out of APUSH (stopped studying) around then :P

I heard if you write swears in your essays they give you extra points.

AHHH, @robsona5549. We should all write “it’s fridayyyy, fridayyy” or something related to that song (Friday by Rebecca Black)

That’s the only recent social phenomena I can think of. hmm

There was also Charlie Sheen but it is probably something with Friday, that is more recent.

My Human Geography teacher’s idea: “The Rent is Too Damn High” (which could be used for von Thunen)

anyone have the real answers to the 2001 MC thats not in a text file? several of the answers look super suspect :

like majority of southerners had no slaves… the answers i have say 5 slaves…

the majority didnt have slaves antebellum south i believe.

All of you should be in bed! Good Luck! Hopefully, I’ll take APUSH next year. I have my AP Euro test tomorrow!
