Official 2011 AP US History Thread!

Jd… Can you just type up all your essay plans? Hahah :)

I’m solid from 1600 to 1776… then I don’t really know anything until 1812. What are potential essay topics from the period I’m missing? / Possible essays about 1600-1800??

At this point, I feel like I don’t know anything.

There might be something on Jeffersonian Democracy. But my teacher said he suspects a post-Civil War prompt!

haha join the club…aghhhh

ack. Jd, what would you write about Jeffersonian democracy? I remember very little about that…

RECONSTRUCTION (after the Civil War)

Basically, open with something about how the Union won (appomatox courhouse), Lee represented the valiant effort of the south. Okay, now that we won, we had to figure out a way to govern the southern states and annex them into the union.,

Radical republicans formed earlier in opposition to south, now they wanted the south to PAY for slavery… Scalawags and carpetbaggers were the terms given to northerners who moved to the south, only to oppose their views.

Mention 13-15th amendments (14th wasn’t originally ratified

Most freedmen worked as tenant farmers after civil war (know this for APMC)

-Reconstruction act places south under military rule of the north

-south is SO ****ED by all this, they form the Ku Klux Klan

Lincoln- Know his 10% plan

Andrew Johnson- Tenure of office Act said that the president could not dismiss any cabinet member without permission from the state, but andrew jackson DID do this with edwin stanton, and he was almost impeached, but he dodged a bullet and missed it by 1 vote.

-Ulysses S grant was the hero of the civil war

-Compromise of 1877 ends reconstruction, basically the south gets their way again and this paves the way for new issues in the future

Scalawags were NOT Northerners who moved to the South; they were Southern whites who supported Reconstruction.

Carpetbaggers were Northerners who moved down to the South; Southerners believed the carpetbaggers were just there to plunder and fill their “carpetbags” with money.

JEFFERSONIAN DEMOCRACY

-Jefferson taking office was the first “Peaceful” transfer of political parties to date (he was democratic republican, took office from the previous federalists)

-Jeff obv, belived in yeoman farmers peacefulness and opposed a strong national government. He saw a future in small farm towns and a very strict interpretation of the constitution.

-Purchases Louisiana in 1803, this was called a “contradiction” by some b/c there is nothing in the constitution about a president being able to do this, but he saw it as a good opportunity to spread his future farm lands

-Jeff sent Lewis and clark to explore the land bought from Napoleon(Lousiana purchase) ( napoleon sold it for quick profits, he was having trouble in his own country) , they explored the new land and mapped it out and all that… looked for economic possibilites in farming

-Henry Clay’s American system, ( i guess u could try to impress the grader by comparing it to mercantilism, they were similar in that they opposed foreign economic involvement and different because mercantilism put more emphasis on trade)

-Marbury Vs. Madison- Judicial review

-Jefferson had to deal with all the “midnight appointments” of the leaving john adams, he immediately impeached a few of them

-John Marshall remains as the supreme court justice and establishes many important concepts through famous court cases

-Twelfth amendment - electoral college could vote for the president and the vice president separately

You could also talk about Aaron Burr, he basically was an ugly mole on jeffersons shoulder as his vice president, he strongly opposed jeffersons views and tried to get hamilton to start a northern confederacy against jefferson… hamilton then accused burr of trying to ruin america, they get in a fight, agree to a dual, burr shoots and kills hamilton, then moves west to avoid jail, he then meets general james wilkinson in the west and they plot to run another northern confederacy against jefferson, james wilkinson betrays burr and tries to get him arrested, the (FEDERAL) court justice john marshall made several rulings that saved burrs A$$

sorry if that was confusing, its late here and i just typed that out really fast

@jd989898 I would try to not use “we” as that would sound berry berrrryyy biased to the readers haha; and also, even 5 Steps to a 5 has a typo about reconstruction. They say in they rapid review to know “Andrew Jackson’s reconstruction policies” but we need to make sure not to get the two mixed up. This is Andrew Johnson, not the president from 45 years ago.

thank you lowell, you are correct…

if you are cramming, just try to remember that scalawags and carpetbaggers are (basically) people in the south that supported the views of the north

edit- how ironic galaxy, that’s the book im using haha…

Thanks for the quick review though :)

yo jd thanks a lot. anyway you can do a quick one on the great depression?? haha

So for gender roles, we have the Republican Motherhood, the social movements of the 1830s such as temperance, better school systems, better prisons, etc… there’s the cult of domesticity…

In the late 1800s you have Jane Adams and her Hull Houses. Getting into the 1900s there’s Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton and the Seneca Falls Convention in New York. Of course the 19th Amendment in 1920. A renewed women’s movement in the 1960s as you have the National Organization for Women.

Jeannette Rankin was the first woman elected to Congress and the only member of Congress to vote against both WWI and WWII.

Thank you JD!!!

I’ll do an essay outline on the great depression in just a sec…

If anyone could do WW1, WW2, New Deal or Vietnam(preferrably) I would ( and many others) GREATLY appreciate it.

Just a reminder to everyone… 20 questions are on blacks and women. KNOW THEM!!

I think gender roles would be so easy to write about

@natalie

then can you do one? hahaha

Mrhulse.com —> go to class lectures. Download any powerpoint you want. Its basically a somewhat in depth outline of EVERYTHING!

GREAT DEPRESSION

-Open with something about the ~10 years of prosperity after WW1

-Know that the IMMEDIATE cause of the great depression was the stock market crash

-know the date 1930 ( when the depression started )

-Highest unemployment rate was up to ~25% ( know that for APMC)

-Depression primarily caused by high tariffs that discouraged trade with the Europeans, too much use of credit ( took nation into debt ) too many people were spending money that didn’t exist that caused major inflation

-Overproduction of manufactured goods was a BIG cause…

-After WW1, so many machines were in use, that human labor need was scarce and this caused unemployment

-you can say something about War Debts from WW1

-1932- FDR responds with the new deal, know the 3 R’s ( Reform, relief, recovery)

he employed several acts under the new deal to improve the economy

-(Agricultural Adjustment Act) regulated the amount of crops planted to control inflation

-(Home Owners Corporation Loan) Gave many a loan on their homes so that they wouldn’t be homeless

-(Works Progress Administration)- helped unemployment, gave many people jobs

soon after came WW2… which i know almost nothing about for some reason haha…

if anyone has any more requests just let me know… I’m best at stuff before 1900…

It would be awesome if someone could write outlines for women’s roles/rights throughout history and WW1/WW2. thanks so much guys, we’ll do fine…
