Official 2011 AP US History Thread!

How far do you have to know for the test? 2000 election? 9/11? Iraq? Katrina? Obama? Obamacare?

The most recent question on the 2006 released exam was on the 1979 Three Mile Island disaster. There are at most 2 questions on post-1980 events. Here is what you need to know:

  1. Reaganomics
  2. Reagan opposed communist expansion
  3. Clinton = NAFTA
  4. Three key demographic trends: Movement to the Sunbelt, Rising tide of immigrants from Asia and Latin America, and aging population.
CB could always ask something else. But it would require a lot of reading for at most 1 miscellaneous question. Best to study the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

If CB asks about Obama, they would not call it “Obamacare.”

Shouldn’t need to know past the 80’s. 1-2 questions isn’t really worth studying for.

Obamacare is less of a mouthful than [Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Affordable Care Act - Wikipedia).
Though I agree, Obamacare is a very politicized term, used generally only by the right, and would never show up on any standardized exam.

Does anyone have like a huggge list of APUSH topics/terms that are important to know? I saw some girl with it today and I asked her where she found it and she said this website…O_O

She is probably talking about the US History in a Flash page on FB. It’s the new Direct Hits book and it is awesome! They have been putting up key topics all week.

Is that Direct Hits book reliable? I feel like it’s so new and unexperienced lol…

@business girl: It SEEMS amazing, but since it’s brand new, it has yet to be tested on the actual AP. But I think, based on reviews, that it’s going to be very helpful. but you never know!

The Direct Hits book is great, both AP USH teachers at our D’s school really like it, and they are tough, through instructors (in addition to the American Pagent text, the classes uses Zinn, AMSCO and Spirit).

How do you guys cite? I always cited the documents as I would in a research paper (Doc B). Everyone in my class did it differently, but everyone got a 4/5. (I got a 5).
My advice is that you prepare prepare prepare! There’s never an excuse for not doing well on the essays. MC, yes, there may be problems. But the essays are handed to you on a platter!

I cited the Euro documents (which were numbered) simply with (#); since my essay is written with letters (duh), it’s pretty obvious I’m citing a document when some seemingly random numbers show up. But since the APUSH documents are referenced with letters, I do (Doc _) so that it doesn’t seem like I have a random letter in parentheses in the middle of my essay.

Aaahhh ! My DH book arrived today ! :)

@Christy: Do you like it?
I’m using it to review for APUSH and the US History subject test, and so far so good!

I’ve been told to cite as “the New York Times cartoon” or “according to Hoffman” etc

We use amsco and brinkley (I think regular USH uses pageant now). We alternated outlining from the two of them this year. That direct hits website has 100 free MC questions for APUSH and their FB page is quirky and helpful. Awesome!

^^I introduce the document with a phrase like that but still put the (Doc _) at the end. So if a 1920 New York Times cartoon is Document E, I’d do something like this:

As shown in the 1920 New York Times cartoon, _________ (Doc E).

^That’s how I cited.
So, you juniors excited? APUSH is the easiest test! Well, I love history, so that’s why.

@MarinebioSax: I read from the Progressive Era and I’m on the Korean War right now (studying for Tuesday’s final), and I hope to finish the rest tonight. But so far, I like it ! It’s like the perfect mix of Crash Course & AMSCO in my opinion.

Study Question?

So I have read AMSCO once (throughout the year), REA once (these past 2 months), and up to the civil war in REA again.
I just got DH and the REA crash course in the mail, so I was wondering if I should I:

1)just ditch REA and read DH as many times as possible (I like the DH style better, so it reads easier for me) and then the crash course, or

2)should I finish REA (I’ve been reading slowly so this might take some time) and then squeeze in whatever else I can?

Ahah, thanks! :)

Kind of related to what Zadrii asked, I already have REA, crash course and Amsco, is it worth it to get DH?
