*** OFFICIAL 2013 AP Computer Science A Thread***

Hi everyone,
I couldn't find this thread anywhere on the site, so I decided to create one. Here, we can all share study tips/techniques and resources! :)

stackoverflow.com and daniweb are good online resources for Java. The Java tutorials online are also good. Barrons is considered by people on CC in general to be the best review book for APCS.

Don’t forget, of course, the College Board’s archive of FRQs from the last several years. (It was just updated with the 2012 exam.) [AP Central - The AP Computer Science A Exam](<a href=“Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board”>AP Computer Science A Exam – AP Central | College Board)

This class is just Java right?

Unfortunately I have to take this course due to scheduling changes, even though I have no interest in Computer Science(as my name suggests.)

It’s “just Java” in the same way that Calculus is “just calculators”. It’s more about algorithms … but you can’t talk about algorithms without talking about a practical implementation language, and for APCSA, that language is Java.

And I’d say, give it a chance. There’s increasing intersection between the medical and computing fields (e.g. pacemakers, designer pharmaceuticals, human genome research). You might find a different approach to take to your career. :)

Yea thanks. I already took an Intro into computer science class and know basic coding. I just wonder how different this class will be.

hey I’m self studying this. Is only using Barron’s going to be fine?

Went to get an AP Comp Sci book from “BAM!” today…they had none :/. In fact they didn’t really even have any Java books other than some “For Dummies” ones…Perl, C++, Lua, HTML, and a Linux Bible “which I thought seemed neat” but no Java stuff…odd.

This is the only other AP I am taking other than Human Geo. Honestly, going to try my best to get a 5 on both of these guys. I did APUSH last year and got a 4 which I was satisfied with…but AP USH was harder than these two.

Hi, I am promoting something in this post. I have created a Java video tutorial covering the requirements(Java subset) of the AP Computer Science A exam.
It’s made in an easy to follow step by step manner. It’s only 4 hrs long, and every topic is covered in detail.
Every concept is taught using a simple program. There is also a small project to tie everything up.
I have 1.5 hrs of the 4 hr toutorial free at [Java in 4 hrs - Step by Step Video Tutorial - YouTube](<a href=“Java Tutorial for Beginners - Made Easy - Step by Step - YouTube”>Java Tutorial for Beginners - Made Easy - Step by Step - YouTube)
I assure everyone who watches the video, you will ace the AP Computer Science exam or I will refund the money.
Go ahead and give the sample chapters a try.
Take a look at the 16th part class and object just to get a hang of it here [P16 Class & Object - Java in 4 hrs step by step - YouTube](<a href=“P16 Class & Object - Java in 4 hrs step by step - YouTube”>P16 Class & Object - Java in 4 hrs step by step - YouTube)
Also, how to go about preparing for the exam is at [Patrick Videos](http://www.patrickvideos.com/#!ap-cs-exam/cctf)

Is there a java 5 JDK for macs anywhere? My mac is the 10.5.8 version and I really need to run eclipse and java on it.

Has anyone found a good, simple java compiler for Mac? I use eclipse right now but I don’t like it simce it fills stuff in for me and I would rather do it myself (half of the APSCA exam is writing your own code)
Something like textpad on windows

Does anyone know a good online class for this test?

can anyone help me w/ my prgm on the thread" Help with compsci prgm!"

Have you tried bluejay? That should work fine.

^who is that directed towards
Or am I just dumb and that answer is obvious

does anyone know how to split already written code in a single class into two classes. the instructions for my assignment said we need at least two classes, but I accidentally did everything in one class. do I have to create a new class and create my own methods, or is there a way where I can just break the code inot to classes, but still produce the same result when I run it?

is anyone struggling in this class?? i’m having real difficulty getting an A, anyone have tips for me for my final? that’s the last thing to boost my grade up, i have 89 point something right now and i’d be so sad if i couldn’t raise it to an A

@Dream4Life

Is that the get and set stuff with the client and interface or what not? I thought that was confusing at first. Pretty much it is just one class gets the input and information from the user and then outputs…and the other class just does the program.

If this isn’t what you are talking about…then disregard what I just said I guess lol.

@bintang

Sorry have no tips, my teacher is…insanely easy. He never takes off points for programs being late so we just turn in programs whenever…and thats all we do in the class just do programs he gives us to do and occasionally listen to lectures twice a week. No tests at all.

@gnastygnorc
Wow, I’m jealous. Your class sounds like so much fun. I would say the only downsides to my class is the testing.

To everyone, have you started using GridWorld?

^ I took APCS last year, grid world was a *****
