***Official 2014-2015 AP Micro/Macro Economics***

I was looking at a khan academy video that used the formula of arc elasticity of demand to calculate price elasticity, that is why I’m confused whether I’m right or not. Also how many points do you think this one question is worth

1

so can anyone confirm whether you can use the arc elasticity demand to find price elasticity. Why or why not

Is ap macro hard to self study? im thinking about self studying it next year but I’m not sure

I’d be shocked if they didn’t accept 4/11 for the PED. If they didn’t, it would bring up serious issues of validity since students with stronger content knowledge would be more likely to lose the point than those with less content knowledge. Many teachers specifically tell students they should use the midpoint (or arc) formula for problems that don’t give the actual percent change.

Did you put 4/11 as well?

What is the arc elasticity of demand?

It’s basically more accurate than just the regular price elasticity of demand. Instead of dividing just by one of the two quantities and prices, you have to divide by the average of both quantities and prices. This will give a more precise answer of 4/11 instead of 1/2.

Every specific place on a demand (or supply) curve has a different price elasticity. The problem with simply calculating the percent change in prices (or quantity) to find the price elasticity of a portion of the demand curve is that the value changes depending on whether it is an increase or a decrease. For example, an increase in price from $1 to $2 is a 100% increase in price. However, as the price decreases from $2 to $1, it is a 50% decrease in price. Using “arc elasticity” or the “midpoint formula” will calculate the specific elasticity at the point in the middle of the two prices (in this case, $16).

Which review book would you all say was more helpful? Princeton Review or 5 Steps to a Five? I’m self studying, and my school does not offer either of the classes so I don’t have a teacher to ask for help. Also, which should I take first: Micro or Macro? Would taking both of them be too tough of a workload (I’ve very actively involved in sports and will be self studying two other AP exams, so I’d rather be smarter with my time management)

@CS1211
(Read the last paragraph if you want your questions answered). Hopefully I answered everything you needed.

It all depends which course you like better. I took AP Macro this year, and I think it was easy. Princeton Review does help but ACDC Economics really hels you too. Look up a guy named Mr. Clifford and find his youtube page. To be honest, I used many different resources, so I cannot tell you which one I preferred the most, since all those resources helped me for class and on the AP Exam. Macro is easier than Micro in some cases, but that depends on what you think. If you want a less amount of workload then take AP Macro, otherwise than take AP Micro. Both courses are about the same in difficulty in the end, but AP Micro does go into more depth. AP Macro only focuses mostly on GDP, Real GPD to be exact.

Overall take AP Macro if you want to take it easier on yourself, otherwise take AP Micro. Make sure you study ACDC Economics and use Princeton Review as a review book, but you can choose which one fits you best.

@CS1211 Please try to focus on one course only, but if ur not so busy than study for both. :smiley:

@dan213

I used Mr. Cliford’s videos as well, and I found them to be very helpful.

@CS1211

I felt that the REA review book was the most helpful out of all the review books. You can also read the reviews of it on amazon. They’re pretty good.

@dan213 @CS1211 @bobthebuilder13 I would say MR. Clifford’s app for Macro really helped. I got a 5 this year on Macro and a 4 in Micro even though I took the Micro class and self studied Macro.

Awww after seeing my score for Macro (a 5), I really wish I took the micro test too. I self studied the class (our school combines micro and macro into 1 year long course), so I didn’t feel confident about taking both tests. It’ll be annoying if I have to take the micro equivalent in college again, since my college would’ve accepted a 4 for full credit, but at least I’ll know everything.

I was a little surprised at the 5, since I totally bombed FRQ3, but I did really well on the MC, which was apparently weighed as 66% of the score?

@CS1211 Clifford’s videos were ok, they were good for getting a general idea/clearing up basic confusions, but didn’t go in depth enough for me. Crash course is the best IMO, everything in there is relevant to the tests and is presented in an organized way. Princeton Review is good for practice tests but a little lacking in content.

@silmaril @tylander

How did you guys get your scores already? Don’t scores come out tomorrow?

@bobthebuilder13 I live in California so yeah my scores come out July 10th on college board but the UC campuses posted our scores on our portals a few days ago.

Got a 4 on micro, didn’t take macro. Kinda disappointed since this year’s batch of FRQs seemed so much easier than past years.

@bobthebuilder13 I’m going to be a college student next year, my college posted my scores on my student portal.
