Excuse me. I have checked all the posts on this thread multiple times. I am just warning people to not get their hopes high. The odds are against us. It’s best to assume a rejection, if you do get in, then good for you, but if not, it’s expected.
If the response to my last update email (recent) didn’t say that they aren’t considering anyone anymore, are they considering me?
"Thank you for your continued interest in the University of Chicago and for your patience during the waitlist process. This year’s applicant pool was one of the strongest and most competitive, and we wish we were able to offer admission to every worthy applicant. However, I regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you a place in the Class of 2021.
I recognize that this message may come as a disappointment to you. Nevertheless, the “Life of the Mind” lives on wherever there are those who carry the banner, and I know that you will engage your future educational plans with the same enthusiasm and initiative that led you to consider us. You are a talented scholar, and you will do well wherever you matriculate. Though we are unable to offer you a space at UChicago this time around, we hope you will think of us if you apply to graduate school."
Does anyone know if they are still offering gap years?
Is there anything left to do in terms of sending a gap year letter?
@chessplayer101 I just received that same email. I’m also hoping for some advice on how to get the gap year (if that’s even available).
@Hizeus I would send a letter just in case
Well, it finally came. I am so relieved this is over. Okay guys wish you the best for your college careers. Remember it’s not us its them. LOL.
“We hope you will think of us if you apply to graduate school”
Fat chance! Hate you too UChicago; I would never think of apply to your grad school. If they think that after how they treated the waitlist that it would encourage me to apply to their grad school, then they are more full of it than I thought.
I’m really upset right now, so I’m sorry if this post comes off really hostile. It’s been a pretty discouraging process, and I’m not exactly really excited for the next four years. I’ll get through it like I did high school.
@Meganerd2012, sorry things did not work out for you and the others … so far as UChicago goes. But things will work out wherever you go. As they say, “when one door closes, another opens!” So good luck to you and the rest!
I also received the same email. Sad, but oh well. Off to Georgia Tech! (unless I get in at Harvard, but I’m not expecting it)
officially rejected LOL
tbh i gave up getting off a while ago
@Hizeus Last week I emailed my counselor and said that I was still interested in the gap year option and that UChicago is my top choice, but I did not specify what I would do with my gap year. I am from Michigan. In addition, my high school counselor emailed my UChicago counselor on my behalf.
I think my post got superseded by other posts.
Why do they waitlist so many if they do not have room and acceptances from waitlists+gap year acceptances never go beyond 100-200 (max). Their job could be done with having around 250-300. Having a complete class (close to 3000) waitlisted is very wrong and meaningless. I hope they do not waitlist around 3000 considering the hypothetical 0% yield in mind. God bless the Admissions Office.
I want to know what you all think of this argument.
I think they’re crazy and they expect us to be crazy…lol, I don’t even know what to say
@intellectboy . I just wish they gave us some intel into their waitlist process.
AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WHY WOULD THEY EVEN BOTHER WAITILISTING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WHO ARE IN NEED OF MASSIVE FINANACIAL SUPPORT?
Good luck to everyone where ever you may be. God bless UChicago.
@intellectboy @Bluejay21 - they do waitlist a lot of kids but that’s pretty common for elite schools. The reason they do this is not only so that they can be sure of getting the needed numbers to fill the class, but also as a signal that you actually were qualified to attend UChicago. This doesn’t make much sense to those in the wait pool who are ultimately dinged, but a waitlist is different from an outright rejection. With the waitlist, had they the room, you’d be in. With a rejection, even if they had the room you wouldn’t be in. There is a distinction. There is essentially no difference between you and the last batch of kids accepted, other than they might have had some small factor that the adcom needed to complete the class this year (had it been another year, the outcome might well have been different). Knowing that you were waitlisted at UChicago pretty much means that you’ll do fine wherever you go. Not so with an outright rejection.
I got accepted off of the waitlist for 2018 entry just two days ago. I am also an international student, my LOCI was very brief and didn’t say anything about a gap year. I would say there is definitely still hope for those who haven’t yet heard back
So that ‘life of the mind’ email means I’m out of the gap year option too
Well at least it’s over. Time to move on.
@Crystalline-asa did you verify that with an admissions officer?
I emailed my regional manager, asking if getting the rejection email meant being rejected from the gap year option too and she said unfortunately yes it does. I’m sorry for everyone in the same boat but we will get over it eventually.
