Official 2021 UChicago Waitlist Discussion

Do you think a lot of people will be taken from the waitlist? Will the yield be low?

@apattie123 I have no idea what the emails look like, but I do know that in previous years, they asked people to tell them a time that’s best for them to call and the call is about getting admitted off the waitlist.

Hopefully, if what the AO told me is true and they don’t change their mind, we should hear back by tomorrow if you’re one of the lucky ones that hear before May 1 (which are usually their top picks from the waitlist). If not tomorrow, at least by next week as UChicago likes to let people know in April before they put down an desposit and lose money.

@Meganerd2012 I hope we get in. Is UChicago your dream school? I really want to be there.

I hope we know before May 1st. I don’t want to put a deposit down.

for another school

With the new ED/EDII, I expect the yield to be pretty high since it seems that mostbof the class is comprised of those who got in ED. Therefore, I don’t expect many people getting off the waitlist.

That being said, they may take off if they are concerned about the low 2% RD rate in order to raise up the percent admitted RD. However UChicago may take 0 off the waitlist (if the yield is very high), and no matter how much people they take off the waitlist, there’s a very low chance (think .5% ) of getting off the waitlist. Last year (or the year before that) someone called the AO and they said that they would take off ~40 people of the waitlist and this was out of the thousands (probably around 3,000) that were on the list.

@apattie123

I hope we get in too. I’ve been wanting to go to UChicago for years.

@Meganerd2012 What is your prediction of how many people get off the waitlist?

@apattie123
I honestly don’t know. It depends on both the yield rate and if Nordof wants to increase the RD rate with the waitlist. If we’re lucky, maybe 30-40, if not…

@Meganerd2012 I wanted to go to UChicago since 7th grade. We are so close yet so far. Hopefully, a miracle happens and we get in. Do you know anything that we could do to get in? What things can we do to make ourselves stand out.

@apattie123

The only thing we can do is write a letter of continued interest to let them know UChicago remains our top choice especially if you have any major updates and/or tell them that you would 100% attend if admitted.

UChicago seems to frown upon sending any additional material or calling the admission office (or have others call on your behalf) which is understandable since theybare still pretty busy this time of year and are just focused on the incoming class.

@Meganerd2012 Hopefully we get a call and an email tomorrow!

Hi guys, I just finished the call, and yes I got admitted to Class of 2021! I’m legit crying right now. Good luck to the rest of you guys and may the odds be ever in your favor.

@HorsesPwn42 When did your counselor email you?

@HorsesPwn42 stats? geographic location? major? M/F?

33 ACT (29 in reading lol), GPA 3.8, AIME qualifier?. I’m in the NY/New England area. Major = physics. M. He emailed me in the morning asking when I could talk to him on the phone.

The worst part was that I got deferred ED1. I felt so bad

@HorsesPwn42 Congrats!!! Did you send in a LOCI? Also did you select the gap year option? Have fun at UChicago!

LOCI was sent on the 10th, and I selected the gap year option.

@pineappledragon Did you send a letter of interest? What actions did you take to be taken off the waitlist?
