**Official AP BIO 2012 Thread**

Which bio book by campbell and reece is the one I should get? Biology (by Campbell and Reese), Campbell Biology (by Reece, Urry, et al.), Biology: concepts and connections (by campbell, reece, taylor and simon) etc?

^The first one.

Hey guys. This is a really hard class for me so I’m going to be sticking around to get help. Seems very interesting though!

I disagree, I have Biology: Concepts and Connections and it is shorter, and to my knowledge has just as much useful information.

The first one has way too much information. Great if you like Biology, but overwhelming if you have other priorities in life. The second one is more than adequate for the AP exam.

I am going to self study this one. Any advice? I know cliffs is absolutely necessary but is Reece and Campbell necessary or will it just be too difficult to get through? I want a 5 and I plan on watching the lab videos online but I need to get started so I was wondering if you guys had some advice.

Should I just get Reece and Campbell and read through it as well with Cliffs. Also, do I need to read through all of Reece and Campbell’s book or just part of it…? Thanks.

000ooo000ooo
I’m kind of in the same situation as you. I’m just starting with the powerpoints and plan to familiarize myself with the materials. Then I’m going to use Cliffs as a review. Then, I’ll like solve tons of practice problems. However, I’m not planning to go through the textbook… Maybe if I’m having hard time, I will.
Also, do you mind telling me where you are planning to watch the lab videos?
I’m currently using virtual labs but it’s not that helpful :(

Thanks

I don’t understand why you’re so happy about taking the new format
Isn’t it just half the # of MCs it has now but with 9 essays?

@ernestjohn In return, the new curriculum requires future AP students to focus on less material. Instead of ~56 chapters and insane amounts of cramming, students get to dwell more on specific concepts and only need to focus intensely on ~36. That’s a lot less to cram and stress over. However, I’m not going to be around for any of the changes to really take place. I’m finishing APUSH, AP Calc BC, AP Biology, and APES all this year (before the changes). Senior year, I’m taking AP Physics Mechanics, AP Psych, AP Spanish, and AP Lang (or perhaps the other one, but definitely not both). Hah, I feel as though my life is a mixed blessing: One of the last ones to take the old exam that the teachers at my school are familiar with, but also one of the AP exam takers who never will enjoy an improved(?) AP classroom environment.

Hello everyone!

I’ve been in school for about two weeks now. We were assigned the entire ecology unit over the summer (chapters 50-55). We had to complete a large packet of questions, take online chapter quizzes, and complete an ecology storybook. Thank God that is over.

Since we’ve been in school we’ve conducted AP Labs 11 and 12. Our teacher makes us self-study chapters 40-49. The self-study homework assignments are due every Monday and she will also give us take home tests on those chapters.

I just took my ecology unit test yesterday (40 MC) and today (the timed essay). The MC were OK, not great, not awful. The essay was on trophic levels/food webs. Pretty easy. The class is pretty demanding so far, I have had mostly As, some Bs and Cs.

We’re starting chapter 2 tomorrow, and my teacher plans to cover 2 chapters per week, ah! That’s all I have to report for now!

P.S. I’m glad I’m taking this before the new format. 9 essays? Ouch!

Took my first quiz today and got a 100. (:

does anyone have any good sites/video/books that can help me with the class because I’m not understanding certain things

^Khan Academy

41/42 on the unit one test what what ^.^

First thing my teacher gave was a practice AP test. With the knowledge that I had at that point, which was absolutely nothing on the AP scale, I would have passed with at least a 4 :). Thank you Bio Honors teacher!

I’m taking AP Bio as a junior now but this class is considered the hardest AP in my school. I took Physics and Chem freshmen year and then bio sophomore year. A lot of my friends decided to take AP chem soph year but I wasnt that good at chem so I didnt and now I’m not good at the chem concepts that are showing up in bio like molecular bonding- does any one have any good links for these concepts

AP Bio is pretty hard.
My teacher makes the tests insanely hard.

We are doing Cellular Respiration chapter and lecture next Monday, and today we did the second AP Lab (Enzyme Catalysis). I’m not sure if this is too hard of a class, really, I enjoy it a lot. Also, about 10 people dropped the course, so now we’re down to 9, which is all that better LOL.

Okay our class is starting a unit on Metabolism, Cellular Respiration, and Photosynthesis. So far we’ve done Labs 1 and 3A (and are doing the enzyme catalyst Lab 2 right now) - and I think the class is fun so far! :D

Just a word to the wise…some people in my class tried to take the Biology E SAT II after only one month of AP Bio. They’re all cancelling their scores. I would wait until January.
