for scores of 2014 exams once released and continuation through 2015

post predicted scores

predicted: 5 probably it was honestly fine for me. Maybe a 4 cause the MC sucked

bump it

lets play bumper carts

should start a new thread called “AP CS A predicted scores” or something because this title makes it seem like this is a thread for people taking the exam next year

I’m taking CS next year!

Indeed you should post your predicted scores on the 2013-2014 thread

<a href=“*** Official AP Computer Science A Thread 2013-2014 *** - AP Mathematics & Computer Science - College Confidential Forums”>*** Official AP Computer Science A Thread 2013-2014 *** - AP Mathematics & Computer Science - College Confidential Forums;
, and if you get a high score give some pointers to people like Weeknd that plan on taking it next year.

No more GridWorld from now on. So jealous.

Do you guys think it’s possible to self study and take a class (assuming it’s pretty rigorous in nature at my school) in AP computer science next year? I’ll be a rising junior, and I just really love computer science, but it didn’t work into my schedule, unfortunately. I’ve just finished pre-calc (most accelerated math path at my school), and I pretty much ace everything on it… Regarding the class scheduling, there is this thing called an “independent study” I could take advantage of and take “independently” and learn “independently.” The teacher who’s teaching AP computer science seems like she’s not very optimistic about it, but I’m pretty determined! So… Think about your course… Pretend you were never to show up in class, but did all the homework etc. by yourself… Do you think it’s possible to learn from that class and do well?

Good luck everyone for the class next year, it was definietely one of my favorite classes that I took. Some advice:

Don’t worry too much about definitions, just know stuff works and why along with the ability to apply it
Practice Questions when you are preparing for the AP Exam are you best friend. Review Books. I used both Barrons and Be Prepared for the AP Computer Science in Java

No Gridworld for you guys I found a free source of points.

@Newdle @Weeknd I took the AP Comp Sci A test in 2013-2014, and self-studied for it – my school didn’t offer the course, nor did many schools in the surrounding area.

Is self-studying for comp sci hard? In my opinion, no. I may be a bit biased - I have many years experience with Java and other programming languages. If you know Java, then this test is very easy – in truth, it’s much more of an AP Java exam than an AP Computer Science exam. I think the GridWorld Case Study (which I didn’t even look at until the day before the test) was fairly easy, but hope they replace it with something a bit more useful next year (it’s hard to say if the changes to the test will make the test easier or harder).

That being said, this year’s test was incredibly focused on code analysis. In all of the years that I’ve been programming, there has never been such a hardcore focus on code analysis – it’s tedious and a time-consumer. Is the test very doable for somebody who didn’t take the course? Yes. Very doable. I’d venture to say it’s one of the easiest APs for somebody who has even a remote interest in Comp Sci/programming, and even easier for somebody who even knows the basics of Java.

For those who are self-studying, I found the Barrons AP Comp Sci A (6th Edition) to be very helpful for showing how questions will be asked on the AP test. For FRQ, Barrons was very accurate… Not so much for MC… I’d recommend getting the new edition, though, as it will cover whatever they replace Gridworld with.

Got a 2, think I’m gonna self study and retake. If I had gotten a 3, I would have just put it in the back of my mind but a 2…disappointing

@terrapin45 (and everyone else): GridWorld isn’t being replaced with anything else, at least as far as the exam itself is concerned. The time in class that used to be spent on GridWorld will be spent on other laboratory-like experiences, at the instructor’s discretion. The test itself will be more-or-less the same as before; the free-response question on GridWorld will be replaced by another “ordinary” question (like the other three), and the five multiple-choice questions on GridWorld will be replaced by other “ordinary” free-response questions.

My school requires you to take a couple classes before AP CS, but I don’t have room for those. My plan is to use AmplifyMOOC and other resources and self study for 2015.

Here’s a link: https://users-mooc.amplify.com/about-apcs.html

It’s completely free and looks like a full-out course, so hopefully it’ll work well enough for the exam.

Does anybody else have experience with the amplify mooc APCS course? I was wondering if I should do it since I couldn’t find a free course geared towards the AP curriculum. Does anyone else have other resources on self studying for this exam other than the Barron’s book? I know a lot of people seem to be getting 5’s while self studying but has prior experience in programming. Are there any online free classes or other resources in learning AP comp sci other than amplify? Thanks

Khan Academy might also be a good resource, but I’m not sure if their stuff is exactly on point with what’s on the exam.

Khan Academy has Javascript which isn’t even close to Java.

@bloodythunder Yeahhh, that’s what I thought.

I can’t find any reviews of Amplify, though. I guess I’ll use it but have a review book on hand just in case it’s not good enough.

@potterismylife yea sadly since amplify is pretty new I couldn’t find any reviews of it either. Hopefully it works out and I will also probably have a Barron’s in hand. I really hope that’s enough for someone with no prior programming experience
