Hello!
I’m a student living in Tokyo, and I’ve just been admitted to ED Cal Poly and I’m really looking forward to it! At the same time I’m a little worried how I can survive in such a different environment from where I live now. I’m half american and half Japanese, but I’ve never lived in the States (I visit once every 2 or 3 years over the summer).

Are people at SLO welcoming? I have to admit that I have a little bit of a prejudicial/uncertain view towards California that people there will stick together as Cali-people and look at me in a weird way.
And finally, what is the proportion of Japanese students that attend SLO? It would relieve a lot of my worries if I had a friend to talk to in Japanese.

Just to follow what others have been doing:

Nationality: US/Japan (No residency)
SAT: 1940 (Math 720, CR 620)
ACT: Composite 30 (Math 33, Science 27)
GPA: UW 3.65
Limited Volunteer work
Highly rigorous Highschool in Tokyo
APs: Japanese (5), World History(4), US History(4), Physics(5), Statistics(NA), Calculus(NA), Environmental Science(NA), Language and Composition(4), Literature and Comprehension(NA), Macroeconomics(NA)

@spidey people at Cal Poly are very welcoming. For example, my brother goes there and this is his 4th year, one of his good friends and roommates since his 2nd year is also from Japan and is in the same situation as you. From what I have seen everyone there is very nice and welcoming!

Hi Spidey – Congrats on getting into Cal Poly SLO!! We are just like your family and my son is a dual Japanese-American citizen. Although my son was raised in the US, our ties to Japan are deep and he spent every summer in Japan since he was little. We also live in an area in California that has a large Japanese population so we are very much bilingual and bicultural. You will not have any problems adjusting to Cal Poly SLO with regards to making friends and being accepted. My son had an easy transition and was welcomed openly by his friends, classmates, clubmates and roommates. You will experience zero racial intolerance – my son is a Junior and has never once mentioned anyone treating him any different than any other student because he looks different. With regards to Japanese language, there are a handful of Japanese speaking students and one or two staff people that speak Japanese and that is all. My son has run into a couple of Japanese students in different majors but that’s it. I do not think that Cal Poly SLO is very well known in Japan. But those Japanese that know of the school respect it a lot. In the US, Cal Poly is recognized as a leader in hands on education. My Japanese father and sister in law loved it when they visited the school last year. What is your major?

Also, this is a shout out to Mochilime. Maybe you can contact Spidey1228 or Spidey you can contact her. Mochilime on this thread is also in a similar situation and she was also just accepted ED to Cal Poly. Good luck.

Thank you Sportsfan50 and OsakaDad (After viewing a couple posts by OsakaDad in SLO threads on CC, I was hoping you would read my post, so thank you!). After reading yours as well as other posts on CC about SLO, I’m convinced that I shouldn’t need to worry about people there in Cali, and I’m relieved by that. I really like the hands on approach at Cal Poly (and its motto), because I don’t like just being lectured and asked to “read” in order to learn, so I’m hoping I can enjoy an active learning experience there. This makes me even more excited to go there! So thank you so much! 本当にありがとうございました。

Apparantly it’s something like “Thank you for applying for cal poly. You have not been selected for admission to Cal Poly.”
Not very accurate so don’t rely on me!

So you’re not rejected! That means you’re application is passed on to be examined as a regular decision application. You have to wait until April 1st by the latest to see if you’re admitted.

IsaacSF–After you applied for ED, the portal read (I may not have every word right)…“Thank you for applying to Cal Poly for early decision. No determination has been made”. If the sentence is still the same except for the omission of the words “for early decision”, then it means that you did not get in ED but are being considered for Regular Decision. I will hold good thoughts and hope you get in! Best wishes!

My daughter was accepted to Cal Poly for next year through the portal. She hasn’t received any emails or letters in the mail yet. Has anyone received anything else from Cal Poly?

SLOMom2014 and spidey–my D received an email the day after her portal changed to show she was accepted. I would have your D check her email and also make sure she checks her spam. The email was from the Cal Poly Admissions Office and the subject is/was “An Important Message from the Cal Poly Admissions Office”. Nothing has been received through the regular mail so far, though.
