OFFICIAL CAL POLY SLO 2013-2014 Early Decision

Just sent in app. Im so scared I did something wrong. December 15th… lets hope its an early christmas present

I’m so nervous. :p

My son just applied for early decision. He is a psychology major. His weighted gpa is 4.34 but when he filled out the Cal State application it became 4.05. I am not sure how that works. His SAT is
CR 690/Math 650/Writing 610
Any guesses on his chances. Cal Poly is 100% his first choice.

Kimlovesbooks, the GPA sometimes deflates because some students take more than 8 semesters of AP/honors courses, so their overall GPA is high, but the CSUs and UCs only include 8 semesters of completed AP/honors course credits.

Your son seems to be very qualified, especially for his chosen major. I’m sure he’ll be fine, best of luck!

Anyone one can chance me?

Omario84, your GPA is very strong, however your ACT score is what throws me off in giving my opinion. I think if you get a 29 or 30 on your ACT then you’re a strong candidate and can probably make it in, whether it be ED or RD, because my friend with a lower GPA but a 29 ACT is currently a software engineering major. You also took rigorous courses so that helps! Have you already taken the ACT again or is the test date coming up soon? Try your best and try to boost that score, good luck (:

Thanks!
I take it October 26th, my parents and I called cal poly and they said I can report that act score to them and it will still apply for the ED , I’m hoping I will do better.
Additional info:
Ethnicity: Haitian
In state
GPA with 9th grade is 3.72

Major: mech. engineering, secondary major: software engineering
SAT: 2010 (1310)
GPA: 3.78 uw, 3.95 w

does anyone know how the secondary major works? like if you don’t get in your first choice they try you for the second one?

if you apply for early decision, and get denied for your first choice of major, you are not allowed to be considered for your secondary choice of major

CP doesn’t use second major for ED or RD

“CP doesn’t use second major for ED or RD” – thebeach is correct.

However, if you apply ED and get deferred to RD, you have until January 15th to change your 1st choice major to something else.

Hi all, my D will be applying tonight for ED at Cal Poly SLO: major Kinesiology. I’ve heard that CPSLO prefers the ACT, but she wanted to wait to apply until she received results from the Oct. 5th SAT, which were posted today–we’ll send them all. Here are her stats:

CSU Mentor GPA: 4.19
ACT: 31
SAT: 2090 (CR + Math = 1440)
5 APs and 7 Honors, lots of extracurriculars including achieving the Girl Scout Gold Award, although I know ECs are weighted very little.

Looking at the Multi-Criteria admission page, it looks like she’s in pretty good shape–she is short in the amount of English she’s taken (she took 8 semesters instead of the CPSLO desired 10) and she’s short in foreign language…(she took 6 semesters instead of the CPSLO 8). She has the desired amounts of classes in all of the other categories (that page is here: [Freshman Selection Criteria - Admissions - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo](<a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions))

SLO is (obviously) her first choice and her/our hopes are high. But, we also know that it’s very competitive, and just looking over past College Confidential threads we can see many students who were denied admission with even higher stats.

So, we are hopeful, but trying to keep it in perspective! Best wishes to everyone.

Please excuse my questions if they are repetitive. What are considered lab science? To get the “desired” 10 semesters of English am I to assume you have to take 2 English classes in one year?
Thanks for the help. My son applied ED but am trying to see what his chances are.

Others can correct me if there’s a better definition, but there are some science courses that have a lab and others are just lecture with the lab. My daughter took the following lab sciences: Biology, AP Biology and Chemistry. She didn’t take Physics, and I’m also hoping this doesn’t work against her in her application to the Kinesiology major. She had considered taking Physics or AP Physics but really wanted to take AP Bio instead. That class was a bear, but she loved it.

I also was surprised that the “desired” requirement for English is 10 semesters. To do that my D would have had to take 2 English courses in one year to reach the desired 10…that was never even on her radar. Oh, well.

Good luck to your son!

Luckymom, Thanks for answering my questions. Looks like he took Bio, Ap bio, Chemisrty and Ap environmental. If im guessing right than Ap Bio and chemistry are lab science.

Yes, and the non-AP Bio class is a lab science too, if his curriculum is like that at our school.

Here are two easy ways to get the desired extra two semesters of English:

Take either the AP English Language or the AP English Literature exam when you did NOT take the corresponding AP class. Passing the AP exam with a 3 or better counts as a whole year of English as long as you did not already get credit for that course by taking the class. Two of my kids got the extra English this way.

Take a 1 semester or summer session community college English course. A one semester course at a CC counts as two high school semesters (and if you take a transferrable course, it can count as a Cal Poly English class as well.)

I really need to get some work done  but I just came across this…the list of impacted majors in the CSU system. See what CSUF, CSULB, SDSU and SJSU have in common with Cal Poly SLO? http://www.calstate.edu/sas/documents/impactedprogramsmatrix.pdf

I wish I had that AP English information before now! My daughter has applied, but not ED. That impacted major chart is disheartening.

If my D were a junior, we’d get the extra English in the plan, but it’s too late now, I think. I’ll be sure to apply what I’ve learned to Daughter #2 if Cal Poly SLO ends up on her list. For now we’ll hold tight and hope for the best!
