<p>[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: hahaha I was pretty sure I’d be rejected. My midyear report sucked; I had a D and 3 B’s on it (The D in Calc BC!). I’ve only taken 4 AP tests, not even Calc AB though I’m in BC this year. Plus, I’d done NO research, never participated in USAMO/USABO/Chem Olympiad/Physics Olympiad, and wasn’t involved in any “heavy-hitting” extracurriculars. I thought my essays were good, but it wasn’t enough all of the aforementioned weaknesses in my app to prevent rejection. Overall, no surprise here. I’m waiting on a few more rejections though (from a couple Ivies).[/ul]</p>

Awards: National Merit Finalist (Semifinalist when I sent my app)
Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: If you’re really set on Caltech, make sure you do research and stand out in some way. Also, be interesting in general and really carefully consider the questions well in advance. I have good numbers but not much else, and I think that’s what hurt me in the end. I am hoping to get accepted here or a school of similar caliber in grad school. I wasn’t really all that surprised to be rejected, to be honest. Also I kind of wish I took a third SAT II and took that SAT II soon after the AP test. I should have also pursued leadership positions in clubs and been more involved in them. To be honest, I’m not as bitter about it as I thought I’d be, I guess it’s because I found out about Case Western and a scholarship from them beforehand. The only thing to do is work harder in college, I guess.
Where else?: Accepted to Clemson, Georgia Tech, and Case Western. This is the first outright rejection I got (I’m sure there are more rejections to come).</p>

<p>Accepted</p>

[</em>]Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): AMC12 109.5, AIME 6 (2011), USNCO Qualifier, Mandelbrot Regional Winner, National Merit, Math League 1st Place. </p>

<p>[<em>]Essays: Talked about a prank my friends and I were planning to pull off (hope the caltech admissions office doesn’t rat me out, and i won’t post the details here because I think we can still get in trouble…), talked about the feeling of discovery and accomplishment one gets by engaging in scientific research and science in general, and… talked about one time where I used maphacks to win a competitive Starcraft match, felt bad about it, and confessed to my friends. I thought they were pretty good, but idk… I am quite a bad judge of my writing ability
[</em>]Teacher Recs: One really good, one generic/okay
[<em>]Counselor Rec: Decent. She knows me decently well.

[<em>]Awards: A decent amount of regional debate awards, piano awards, MUN awards…add that to the stuff above.

[li] Holy shiznizz I didn’t see this one coming. Was going out to lunch, got the email, thought “oh great, my day is about to be ruined”. was pleasantly surprised</p>[/li]
<p>Where else have you been accepted/rejected?
deferred SCEA princeton, accepted to Illinois ECE</p>

<p>Edit: oops, in my excitement I forgot something. congrats to other people who were admitted! and if you didn’t get in:
reading down the page I was completely astounded by the stats of the people who were rejected. you will all get in somewhere else, and it will be just as amazing. you don’t need to hear it from me, but you’ll know i’m right in like a month</p>

<p>Rejected!! A bronze medal in International Physics Olympiad was worthless. Now, may be it’s time to hear another bad news on the 14th and 23rd. I know my rejection was mainly due to the demand of high(very high) financial aid.</p>

<p>Decision: Accepted</p>

<p>Stats:
-SAT: 2280 (760 CR, 780 M, 740 W)
-SAT II: 790 Bio-M, 790 Chem, 800 Math Lvl II

-Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): AP Calc 5, AP Bio 5, AP Chem 4, AP World 5, APUSH 3, AP Eng Lang 5, AP Art Hist 4</p>

<p>Subjective:
-Essays: Talked about the “everlasting quest of science and engineering to understand the world” and how they can allow us to better the world; described a prank; talked about a tennis match, during which my opponent continued to play despite twisting her ankle
-Teacher Recs: Sent 4 (2 science, 1 English, 1 math teacher); 2 were great, the other 2 were okay
-Counselor Rec: Okay, I guess… she doesn’t know me that well
-Supplementary Material: Report on research done over summer of 2011
-Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, International Olympiads): None</p>

<p>Personal:
-Location: CA

<p>Other
-Extracurriculars: Science Alliance club (founder, president for 2 years); Math Club (founder, president for 2 years, secretary 1 year); Interact Club; NHS; CSF; went to an orphan school in China during summer of 2010 to teach English; regularly volunteer at senior home
-Awards: National Merit Commended Student; AP Scholar w/ Distinction; Contra Costa County Science & Engineering Fair - Fourth Place; Society of In Vitro Biology Award (for science fair project)
-Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: After getting rejected from Stanford (EA) and waitlisted yesterday for WUSTL, I was surprised about this decision. However, I really wanted to get into Caltech (1st choice school), so I guess my app must have reflected my enthusiasm. I don’t have much advice, other than to be honest and try your best to demonstrate your love for math/science.
-Where else have you been accepted/rejected?: UC Berkeley (through the Regents’ & Chancellor’s Scholarship</p>

<p>Congrats to the others who got in, and to those who didn’t, good luck!</p>

<p>@ imtitanium: awww :(</p>

<p>Rejected</p>

<p>Stats
SAT: 2130, single sitting. Reading: 740, Math: 710, Writing: 690. Yuck.
SAT II: 800 Math II, 750 Biology
ACT: 35 Reading, 35 Math, 34 Writing, 29 Science, 9 Essay, 34 Composite.
GPA: US-only GPA: 3.9. US + Brazil GPA: 3.3
Rank: Top 25%. My school doesn’t rank.
Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): 5 AP Cac BC, 4 AP Biology, 4 AP US History. 87.5 AMC 12.</p>

<p>Subjective
Essays: I have a good story. Lived in Brazil, tutored for money for a plane ticket, came alone to the US to go to school when I was 16, ended up homeless but still going to high school and still supporting myself.
Teacher Recs: I accidentally had two recs from different English teachers submitted. I’m sure they were both excellent. My math teacher’s rec was, in his own words, not very thoughtful because he rushed through it while waiting for his plane during winter break -_-
Counselor Rec: Below average. My counselor doesn’t know me and assumed my 3.3 GPA meant I was not ready for Caltech coursework.
Supplementary Material:
Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, International Olympiads): Water Polo recruit, “homeless”, Native (South) American, first generation</p>

<p>Personal
Location: Miami, FL
High School Type: Public, C-average school
Ethnicity: Brazilian, half Native and half Portuguese
Gender: Female</p>

<p>Other
Extracurriculars: 3 officer positions in nationally ranked Mu Alpha Theta (VP of Communications, Algebra II Team Coach, Calculus team member). MAO is my life! Takes up over 30 hours of my week. I also teach Enrichment Math classes at the local elementary school for kids that are gifted in math. Water polo team member and service club member.
Awards: NHRP, National Scholars, trophies in MAO competitions, Excellence in Math award (school-level).
Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I know my stats weren’t up to par. I was hoping the adcom would look beyond that and see that, because of my circumstances, I have to work three times as hard to accomplish anything. Oh well. Fingers crossed for MIT.</p>

<p>Accepted
ACT Scores: 34 composite (36 in English, 33 in math, science, and reading. 8 in writing.)
SAT II: 780 Physics, 760 Math IIC
GPA: 3.91 (unweighted)
Class Rank: Top 10%, but barely
Essays: Strong. I’m a reasonably good writer and my common application essay was about how I’ve tried to go above and beyond the usual curriculum and activities available at my small school.
Teacher Recommendations: Out of the three recommendations, I would guess that two were good and one was great.
Counselor Recommendation: Presumably very good.
Hook: Don’t really qualify for any of the typical “hooks,” but I completed the science curriculum at my school when I was a junior, and now am taking several independent studies in science and mathematics (mostly focused on AP Calc BC, AP Physics B, and Linear Algebra.)
Location: Midwest
High School Type: Quite small. Good school, but I don’t think anyone has gone to an Ivy or other prestigious university in several years.
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Female
Extracurriculars: Did some graduate level research at a university in China last summer through an internship. Other than that, my activities are pretty standard: Knowledge Bowl, mock trial, cross-country, track, physics activities, percussion, piano, etc.
Awards: National Merit Commended Student
Advice/Commiserations/Feel like bragging: Well, I’m incredibly excited! I guess my application is proof that you don’t necessarily have to have a 36 on the ACT, multiple AP classes, or be ranked first in your class… it’s enough to just have reasonably good scores if you can show that you have strong motivation and have tried to make the most of the academic opportunities available to you.</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>Are you international? Caltech is need blind for US students, but need aware for internationals</p>

<p>Accepted, somehow. Couldn’t be happier :)</p>

<p>@Mazewanderer: Yes I am an international.</p>

<p>Accepted</p>

<p>Stats:
SAT: M: 780 C: 800 W: 800 Tot: 2380 (super)
SAT II: Math II: 780 Chemistry: 780
ACT: 35
GPA: 4.25 Unweighted (although my counselor is kind of an idiot, I don’t know if this is right), 4.96 weighted
Rank: 1/718
Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): 5 on Chem, US History, Stats, Psychology, Lit and Comp, and US Government; 4 on Music Theory; 86 on ACS Organic Chem exam</p>

<p>Subjective
Essays: Common App, I thought I put a nice twist on an outdone topic… Other essays were kind of cheesy because I thought I wouldn’t get in.
Teacher Recs: Probably pretty good, although I know one of my letters made a point of putting my biggest weaknesses in the letter.
Counselor Rec: I’d imagine it was good too, although like I said, my counselor isn’t stellar.
Supplementary Material: None
Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, International Olympiads): I played volleyball for a while, so I got a few letters about that.
