Essays: CMU Essay, a lot about my interests in creating things and my interest in creating things. Common App: very unconventional, I would think. I talked about a Super Smash Bros and explained my learning process using the game. I think I did quite well with it.
Teacher Recommendation: APUSH teacher, I had a B in her class, so the fact that she said yes to writing the letter must mean that she had something good to say about me. Pre-calc teacher (from junior year), math team coach all four years. I would think I got a really good rec from her.

Income Bracket:
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I’m a rare specimen in that I’m an Asian male in Stem.

Reflection

Strengths: Test scores?
Weaknesses: Ethnicity, Lack of engineering related ECs, low GPA, no Nobel Prize
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Maybe because I wrote a sloppy additional info, which made them think that my essays are over-furnished
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Don’t know yet

General Comments: Well, I prepared for the worst so this is not too stunning. I thought that I have what it takes, strong math classes, self studied physics B, Build a 3D printer at home, etc. I even went to visit Campus and demonstrated interest. I guess they don’t need more Asian males in ECE.

CFA School of Drama?? So you were accepted to CFA without having to do an in person portfolio review/interview???

Hmmmm - CMU - If an applicant to engineering school gets in with much lower scores/grades than someone rejected to CFA it seems interview is weighted too much especially since how can you determine personality from one interview? Someone can interview great and easily be a nightmare mess to work with for four years - good luck with that!!

whoops forgot to mention Varsity Tennis 9th and 10th grade. actually i think i forgot other stuff. oh well

Decision: Accepted

Objective: Information Systems

SAT I (breakdown): 800CR / 800W / 710M / 2310C

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):
Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): club related to computers (founding member, treasurer, president), club related to the arts (founding member, treasurer), cross-country (1 year), swim (1 year)
Job/Work Experience: n/a
Volunteer/Community service: a lot of hours through Interact and CSF, some hours through outside organizations (continuous volunteering, that is)

Summer Activities:
Essays: really great imo. the why cmu supplement was all about the specific program i was applying to (IS), and the commonapp essay (world I come from) was about a nonconventional topic, hiphop music (I seriously didn’t want to be like every asian/indian student and write about muhculture/muhparents/muhupbringing). probably at least a 9 outta 10 for essays (based on what others who read my essay stated).
Teacher Recommendation: my AP Human Geo teacher who was one of the coaches when I was on the swim team, and a teacher I had for some random Comp. Tech elective freshman year who was also the advisor for that previously mentioned club I was president of. both glowing letters.
Counselor Rec: my school counselor wrote a really nice letter as well, he focused on my community involvement and character instead of academic stuff.
Additional Rec:
Interview: n/a, didn’t care enough

Other

State (if domestic applicant): California
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: public. 2000+ students.
Ethnicity: Asian/indian
Gender: male
Income Bracket: middle class but high enough to get completely f*cked in terms of chances of financial aid
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

Reflection: Feels great to get into such a prestigious university. But now that I’ve gotten in I’m getting a little worried about things like student loans, the cost of going to CMU, and the fact that they don’t give any merit based aid (based on my SAT scores I would qualify for great scholarships at most other colleges).
Strengths: SAT score, essays, not applying to engineering/compsci wasn’t a strength but probably negated the disadvantage of my race/gender
Weaknesses: GPA
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: i’m great
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I already got accepted to Purdue and Saint Mary’s. the other schools I did EA to are probably gonna start rolling in now. and the UCs will come much later. Feels kinda weird though, this whole ED thing, now I don’t get to visit different colleges and choose which one I like the most. I probably should have done more research before doing ED lol but I’m gonna make the best out of this opportunity.
