I’m hoping that’s not the case. I would assume they’ve taken off close to 100 (if not more in the past) simply because HYP and other peer schools have taken over 100 kids off of their waitlists in the past as well. Also, there may be some good news for us because Columbia most likely will not use their waitlist because they over enrolled. So, hopefully there were tons of Columbia students who also got into Brown, which would therefore mean more room for us!

Also, I totally would call to ask about the waitlist and whether or not they plan to use it, but I called earlier this week and I’m paranoid they might have caller ID or something…so if anyone else would care to give it a shot, go for it! Oh, and are we allowed to call to find out why we were placed on the list?

Yield numbers are limiting the chances for waitlist candidates at HYP this year:

The Harvard Crimson :: News :: Yield Holds Steady For 2013 at 80%

Yale Daily News - Yield rate beats expectations at over 68%

Web Update: Yield rises to 59.7 percent - The Daily Princetonian

Projections are that Harvard will take about 110 from the list. Princeton has announced that they will take about 30 off and Yale currently has no plans to use their waitlist.

As a result, will Brown also see high yield numbers (over 50%)?

Congratulations, all~ We’ve made it through another week of anxiety and Brown-pining! Since the admission office is closed, I’m assuming we can all rest instead of check this thread ever so often for any updates (I’m guilty! ). Naturally, the weekend allows for a lot more time for speculation. I wonder if this is a blessing or a curse! Haha.

Like AmbitiousMind, I’ve already mulled over Brown’s admissions. Though I despise references to US News World Rankings, I compiled a list of Brown’s “numerical” peer universities that have used or plan to use their waitlists (in no particular order): Washington University, University of Chicago, Harvard (about 85-100), Princeton (about 30), Stanford (about 80), Dartmouth, Northwestern, Duke, and MIT. This leaves some possibilities for current Brown prefrosh to be admitted into another university. Conversely, this may also mean that Brown and Providence attracted potential students away from the listed institutions. Oh joy.
I also considered AmbitiousMind’s proposal that the overenrollment in Columbia and Yale bodes well for current Brown waitlistees, if it means that these universities drew in cross-admits. However, these numbers may herald Brown’s own high yield, or at least, reduce the chances a current Brown prefrosh to get off Yale’s or Columbia’s waitlist. I usually hear a lot of deliberation between Brown vs. Cornell or Penn, but I can’t find any information on Cornell’s or Penn’s waitlist right now.

The bottom line is that we still don’t know anything concrete and I’m going to go crazy this weekend if I overanalyze this more than I already have. If anyone receives any updates or communication from the admissions office, let us know. Have a great weekend and ditto to pinklady! I’m secretly hoping for 100+ off the waitlist, though I don’t know how feasible that is…

Also, you might want to consider students who have committed to Brown, but have been taken off the waitlist of another school and they choose to go there.

My friend who’s been admitted to Brown spoke to the Dean of Admissions at ADOCH, and she heard that Brown is probably going to admit less students off of the waitlist. Oh well. C’est la vie. Good luck to everyone! (I’m on the waitlist as well.)

Hmm… Overenrollment at Penn, too. Is it due to high interest or simply the effect of the huge population of applicants to college this year? Though it doesn’t really indicate anything about Brown’s enrollment, that’s another bit of info on Brown’s peers’ yields. I hope that ADOCH was too early for Brown’s admissions to estimate the yield!

Gosh. I wish I could research this stuff. I’m just waiting on Cornell and Brown…

By reading other Ivy League threads, I’ve discovered that Harvard, Princeton, UPenn, and Dartmouth will be taking people off the waitlist but Columbia and Yale will not. UPenn is taking a pretty small percentage off. Its still unknown for Brown and Cornell but we’ll probably find out if they’re taking kids off this week. At least I hope so because because I don’t think I can wait anymore.

I can’t wait either, Pinklady12490! Theoretically, it would seem like we’d have a pretty nice shot (relatively speaking) because of all the waitlisted kids that are getting in at HPPD–espeically at H and D. Brown is just so darn mysterious–I like it and then again, I don’t like it. (It shows they don’t have to flaunt their yields/acceptance rates, but they still keep the waitlisters in suspense.)

Oh, and does anyone know if it’s acceptable to call to ask why we were put on the waitlist?

I don’t know AmbitiousMind but I think most of us were waitlisted because of such the large competive applicant pool this year. If we had appiled in any other year, we probably would have had more of a chance of being accepted.

I was actually at Brown today. I live in RI and my sister is a senior there. We were around campus because we were going out to eat for Mother’s Day. Obviously the admission office is closed because of Mother’s Day but I really wanted to go in there and demand to know if they were using the waitlist. lol

I agree. I might be able to explain a bit of the “20% increase in applications”. Common App! I thought about how this is Brown’s first year using the Common App and if that had anything to do with the application increase (probably), if it changed the population that applied to and were accepted into Brown (maybe), and if the new accepted population was as interested in going to Brown as before (mystery!).

I called just called and instead of getting the typical “Brown is not sure yet”, I got a “I can have an admissions officer get back to you. May I have your contact information?”. I don’t think Brown does personal calls for bad news… I hope… Well, if so, it’s a very considerate gesture…

Does anybody else want to try their luck and call? I’m off to school now…

Yay! That’s great news. I just wish we knew how many were coming off or when they will start notifying. I received a generic letter in the mail today mentioning my update letter and thanking me for my continued interest in Brown.

hmm, I submitted an update letter (I actually confirmed with the admissions office) but did not receive anything from Brown… hope that’s not a bad thing for me

called round 1 and they said they are evaluating the waitlisted applicants so waitlist IS being used! said they will contact up 2 a week from now
