woooooah, their OOS chancellor’s nominee scholarships went up this year???

We are still awaiting merit notification.

Looking through this thread it seems as if the scholarship recipiants are primarily from Engineering and Arts & Sciences (Pre-Med). I am wondering if they are reviewing scholarships by school and trying to spread them out a bit because the full tuition scholarships seem to be disappearing from those programs while they haven’t awarded any in Pharmacy. I mean they would want to attract good students across the board, wouldn’t they? I am also hopeful because I don’t see too many Business majors.

@ mondaysun: I don’t quite understand what you are saying, but it interests me. Would you mind clarifying?

I believe mondaysun is referring to the $12,000 scholarship amythechinesekid received. The old amount for those scholarships was 10,000

Yeah, I’m not quite sure about the $12,000 either, since I’ve heard that it’s $2,000 IS or $10,000 OS.

Odd but I’m not gonna complain.

For those who emailed the OAFA to inquire about the status of possible merit scholarships… who wrote the e-mail- student or parent? Which do you think is most effective? (I know that the student should take the lead in the application process, but the parent has quite a vested interest in this matter.) What do you think?

Tuition rates go up every year so it would understandable that they raised the scholarship amount. The only scholarship that cover tuition increases is the full tuition scholarship – there is no amount stated on it since it escalates to cover all tuition increases.

Hello, just wanted to post to say that my son received a full tuition scholarship and was given conditional acceptance to the pharmacy program. He applied very early and was accepted in September, his first acceptance. I have to admit, it brought tears to my eyes, I am a Pitt graduate myself!

Congratulations to you and your son, Graygirl. It is quite an honor!

ssmom - This is what we sent, and their reply. Notification came in the mail less than a week later.

I have received my acceptance, and my Honors College notification.

I am just wondering when I will receive notification of any merit aid as that will definitely effect my decision on Pitt.

Thanks.

Their reply…

All students who have completed the application for admission by January 15th are automatically reviewed for merit-based awards. The merit-based scholarship process at Pitt is very competitive. As a result, it is common for students to be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee more than once before a final decision is made. While it is true that some students learn of their scholarship award shortly after being admitted, many others do no learn about their scholarship eligibility until much later. If a student is going to be awarded a merit-based scholarship, he/she will be notified, in writing, no later than late-February.

Scholarships are awarded based upon a variety of criteria: high school grades, class rank, high school curriculum, SAT/ACT scores, extracurricular activities, personal essays, and leadership characteristics. The volume of applications to the University of Pittsburgh has resulted in an extremely competitive scholarship process. This year, for example, a recipient of one of our lesser scholarships has an average SAT score of 1460 (math and critical reading only), an average grade point of 4.19, and a class rank in the top 5% in a curriculum dominated by AP/IB/Honors courses.

Congrads Graygirl. Finally we see a full tuition scholarship to an acceptance to phamercy program.

My son received a full tuition scholarship letter last Friday.

Graygirl did you just hear back about that scholarship? A lot of pharmacy people have been waiting since October to hear back too… maybe this gives us some hope!

My daughter got the $10,000 OOS scholarship so they haven’t all gone up to $12,000.

That is interesting, so there are now two OOS chancellor’s nominee scholarships: $10,000 or $12,000?
I wonder… maybe they are two different scholarships- amy, do you mind mentioning the name of your scholarship?

The response to my email about merit aid:

“Scholarship letters are starting to go out. If you don’t receive a letter by the end of January, then you may not have received a scholarship.”

Sure, a pretty general response, but it does give me some hope that a new wave of scholarship letters are soon to be mailed. Fingers crossed!

Mondaysun, my letter reads:

"Dear Amy:

Congratulations to you and your family. Based on your outstanding academic record, you have been selected to receive a University of Pittsburgh academic scholarship in the amount of $12,000 per year…blah blah blah maintain a 3.0 GPA…

On the basis of this award, you have also been nominated to compete for the Chancellor’s Scholarship. etc etc."

My d got the letter for $12,000 scholarship !!! (been anxious for like 10 weeks)- going into pharmacy OOS, with the Chancellor’s info. Rushing to get teachers to do references 2 days before break.

congrats NEohio! I can only hope that there’s still something left for me too :)

Ha pinknpreppy216 I told you would get something by Christmas ;)

Don’t know if this helps but I wrote my contact in the admiss/fa office (she is a woman who had written to us to apologize for asking for his transcript after discovering his file was already indeed complete). I told her S. had receive his acceptance on Monday but no mention of merit aid or Honors College. Did that mean he got neither? I gave all his stats and said he was very interested in Pitt and was hopeful with his 1440…etc that he might qualify. She said No it did not mean he had been ruled out for merit aid. (hurray) She said she would pull his “file for her supervisor,” and that the Scholarship Committee would be looking at it soon.

So that’s all I know. She said expect separate mailings and separate envelopes.
My mother used to say when I was a little girl. “You can’t get information if you don’t ask.” So thanks Mom. Glad I asked…lol.

I do not know a lot about Pitt but I have to say-- having attended Bowdoin and Harvard and now having dealt with the Ivies via son’s slog through senior year, that they have been infinitely more responsive than some of the other schools we have dealt with. That’s all I am saying.
