And despite the GPA being on the lower end of the spectrum for Pitt acceptances, does you think I have a chance of receiving any amount of scholarship $?

We got acceptance and honors college in same letter, Scholarship was about 10 days later. In between we had e-mailed OAFA about merit aid - to see when we would be notified.

I feel an e-mail can’t hurt.

Good luck.

I was accepted into university honors college on like oct. 29th/ 30th or sometime around then, and i still haven’t heard from the financial aid office. I’m an out of stater. i got a 1390 on my sats and have a 3.9 gpa (this is weighted, so its probably not that great, but it got me into honors college so it can’t be horrible haha). i’m kinda stressed about it though, especially because pitt’s bioeng program was one of my top colleges. A lot of people are saying they heard like 2-4 weeks after =\ anyone else having this situation?

…Nobody gets financial aid until you fill out the form after Jan. 1

You have to fill out the FAFSA and submit it. Then the colleges will send you the financial aid stuff – they need to see all your financial info from the FAFSA.

I think banjosaur is talking about a merit scholarship (not based on Fafsa) as opposed to financial aid (based on Fafsa-defined need).

Banjosaur, your SAT is a bit under the usual merit aid threshold that we’ve seen of 1400 (for a partial scholarship).

Let the waiting begin…

This email is your confirmation that the University Honors College of the University of Pittsburgh has received your completed application for the 2010 Chancellor’s Scholarship competition. Your application will be reviewed by two members of the Scholarship Selection Committee and final candidates meriting interviews will be notified by both email and snail mail. Candidates not selected for interviews will be notified by snail mail. Interviewing will begin the latter part of January, 2010. There is nothing further you need to do at this stage of the process; however, we do ask for your patience with the reading committee since the evaluation of applicants is an exceptionally arduous task.

Thank you for your participation in our scholarship competition and good luck!

My mom just got a response from OAFA. Apparently I was reviewed for scholarships last week, but I need a second review, which won’t be until mid to late January. It’s becoming increasingly more difficult to remain positive about this. I’m really under the impression that I’ll continue to be put off until there is no money left at all. As it is, candidates with excellent stats are getting less and less money.

I am so sorry to hear that PNP. It is so discouraging and makes no rational sense. You were one of the first to apply and you have excellent stats. Do you have other schools that you applied to, can afford and would be as happy to attend?

I really liked Pitt when I visited and right now it’s on the top of my list, so I may still end up there. I’m just having a hard time imagining paying that much money per year there. Have any other pharmacy majors heard from OAFA on scholarships yet? It seems as though we’ve all been held back, despite how early most of us applied.

Well, I guess the good thing is, if you don’t get any merit from Pitt, it is still “fairly reasonable” even for OOS students. For many private schools you’d have to get about $20,000 in scholarships just to get down to Pitt’s OOS costs since many start off so darn expensive to begin with. (That is assuming no need based financial aid) Plus at least you are going into a well paying field that is actually hiring people. That helps a lot. I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for you though, PNP!

S. was accepted to Pitt today. It is only one of 2 states schools he has applied to (UNC Chapel Hill the other). He is interested in both for medicine. Do you think he will get any merit aid?

General Comments: We just receive the regular admit letter today. Should we be concerned?

Yes, it is very possible (as far as I can tell) that your son will get a merit scholarship. His SAT of 1440 is very close to the 1450 that’s the unofficial cutoff, and he’s also URM. That means he will probably be considered for a Honors Challenge scholarship. If your son doesn’t get a letter from Pitt in about two weeks, I would call the Office of Admission and Financial Aid to inquire. Did the regular letter mention anything about the Honors College?

Thank LurkNess. I dont think it did (not at home now). He has an excellent record plus 5s in the AP exams he took last year. So I hope he has a shot at some money.

hi pnp… my d has not heard anything yet about a scholarship… she has interview at ohio northern pharmacy and waiting to hear from a few others. oos for pgh is too high for us without the scholarship… she has 33act, 1450/2210… accepted in oct.–she doesn’t want to bother pgh to see what’s happening.

washdcmom, I would be interested to see if your son got any money. I have similar stats and have been waiting since October to receive scholarship info. Definitely keep us posted. NEOhio, I have no idea what Pitt was thinking this year with all of its pharmacy applicants… no one so far has gotten any money. Let’s just all keep our fingers crossed that there’s still some money left in Pitt’s bank account for all of the pharmacy reviews in January now I suppose?

@ Washdcmom:
Your son’s stats certainly meet the profile of students who have thus far, but, that being said, Pitt has been slow to release scholarships this year and somewhat mystical in their choices. Many on this thread would advise that, if it has been around three weeks and you haven’t heard back from Pitt regarding scholarships, you should email Pitt’s Office of Admissions and Financial Aid and inquire about a possible scholarship.

@112358:
I would say your amazing SAT score is quite a hook!
