My interview was possibly one of the best interviews I have ever had. I sat with my interviewer for three hours and we could not stop discussing all the topics that kept on coming up. Also, I applied for the SAMS Program, I was wait listed (probably because I did not have time to turn in all the materials, one of my teachers decided she did not feel like writing my rec letter the day before it was due).

[ b]General Comments:[ /b]
I am so happy about this opportunity, I am a big fan of Andrew Carnegie! Congratulations to everyone who was admitted, and all of you who at least attempted deserve recognition as well, atleast you actually applied (unlike many who are too scared of rejection). Anyways! Congrats to everyone overall, I am so happy I look forward to meeting most of the people in my Freshmen Class. Can’t wait for the COD weekend! Ive never been to Pennsylvania.

Has anyone from CA received the decision letter via mail? Both acceptees and rejects receive letters right?

^ yes both sides get notified via mail. Don’t assume you are denied/accepted if you haven’t received anything yet. It’s proven to be random so far.

Decision: Accepted H&SS (Information Systems), waitlisted SCS.

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 770 CR, 700 M, 670 W
ACT: 34
SAT II: 800 Math II, 760 Physics
GPA (out of 4.0): 3.3 UW, I kid you not. 4.11 W
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):
AP (place score in parenthesis): US Government (5), English Language and Composition (4), Calc AB (5), Physics B (5), AP World (5), Computer Science A (4)
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: AP Stat, AP Calc BC, AP Psychology, AP Human Geography, AP Literature, AP Bio, Introduction to Networking/Databases
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Semifinalist, Distinguished AP Scholar, and aside from that nothing.

Subjective:
Extracurriculars: Secretary of Red Cross club.
Job/Work Experience: Two summers interning at Georgetown University, did computational chemistry with nicotinic ligands.
Volunteer/Community service: Enough to get by, haha.
Summer Activities:
Essays: Common App essay was decent, though I’m rereading it and I spot quite a few grammar errors and awkward sentences. Supplement was a mess that I wrote at 4pm on the deadline day.
Teacher Recommendation: Should have been very good, pretty sure she put something about me being creative in there.
Counselor Rec: Not sure, she might have mentioned my exponential trend.
Additional Rec:
Interview: None

Other
State (if domestic applicant): MD
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Magnet Science Math and Computer Science school, ranked #59 by Newsweek.
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: …Not really sure.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I pointed out that even though I was in a very math intensive program, the humanities come to me easier and I’m very interested in integrating technology and society. The double X chromosomes might have also done something.

Reflection
Strengths: My school and my internship, possibly my recommendations.
Weaknesses: Everything else.
Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: No idea, I think the admissions people are crazy. My internship probably carried me through though.
Where else were you accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Accepted at Rensselaer, UMD. Waitlisted at Georgia Tech.

^ wooot for information systems! how sure are you on going to carnegie mellon?

@ryanxing: I’m CA and an acceptee/waitlist (applied to two schools). I got my letter about three days after a friend of mine (acceptee to one school) got hers. We’re in the same town and all of two minutes’ walk apart.

I’ll post my stats a bit later.

To anyone who has yet to receive a “priority” package…don’t freak out. My son’s “priority” package clearly was misplaced or never mailed. We waited two weeks and had to ask for another to be sent. A complete mystery and somewhat stressful even after getting the positive news via the web. If you have forgotten your password, you may need to call and get it reset.

If you are sure you want to attend and have no financial worries, send in that deposit to get your best choices for housing.

@aeroblade: I’m pretty sure I’m going, but I’m a bit worried about my financial aid package at the moment.

Accepted to CIT (ECE)!
US Citizen residing in New Delhi, India.
SAT 1 : CR 660 Math 800 Writing 730
SAT 2 : Math 1 800 Math 2 800 PHY 780 Chem 790
Lots of community service.
Nothing major in EC’s. (Nothing CS or Science related)
Reccomendations : Good
Essays : I liked the common app one. The CMU supplement was rushed.

Congratulations to those accepted. Carnegie is a fantastic University. To those waitlisted, hang in there guys. And everyone rejected, don’t worry guys, there’s an equally fantastic school out there for you all.
:)

General Comments: I’m pretty happy about being accepted to CMU. I was also invited to join the Science and Humanities Scholars Program as well as the Quantitative Social Sciences Program. I’ll likely be joining one of those programs if I decide to attend CMU, just not sure which one at the moment. CMU was considered a “match” school for me.

Any opinions on my chances?

^ You have a great resume, but I wonder why you didn’t do a science SAT II? I’m pretty sure it was required if applying to SCS or CIT.

^ Yeah, CIT requires Math 2C and either Chem or Physics

Sorry, P stands for physics

Ooops, should of realized that. I’m kind of surprised you were waitlisted to be honest. Admission standards are so hard to comprehend…

Thanks. I think it was because I lacked experience in engineering in high school and my SAT I and UW are below CMU average. Do u think I stand a chance for priority waitlist and do you think I should stay on waitlist for both MCS and CIT or does it make me look like I am trying to get in no matter what college?

Last year they took about 15% of the waitlist and accepted them. If you personally think you’ll get in, then you should certainly waitlist for both. I think it shows how badly you want to go to CMU, not any negative sign such as desperation. More of a positive in my opinion.

Decison: Accepted MCS (Physics)
