Official Class of 2021 Northeastern University Early Decision/Early Action Discussion

Let me check

In the top section - labeled:

Application Requirements
The following application materials and/or transcripts are required before the Admissions Committee can review your application. If you haven’t done so already, please arrange to have these materials sent to our office as soon as possible. Please note it takes two to three days to post materials after they have been received.

it lists several things including:
Official SAT or ACT Scores “Completed XXXX, 2016”

The bottom section shows the below application materials received - but it doesn’t include the official SAT or SAT Scores in that section (it shows in the section above, as mentioned):

Common Application “XXXX, 2016”
Counselor Recommendation “XXXX, 2016”
High School Transcript “XXXX, 2016”
School Report “XXXX, 2016”
Teacher Recommendation “XXXX, 2016”

I think its OK - as long as the SAT or ACT scores shows in the top section.

Son applied EA Engineering. That 20000 number is scary !

@TomSrOfBoston Wow, is that 12/6 number accurate still? Does that suggest that admissions are rolling in some way? Most private universities that I’m familiar with opt to release all of their admissions decisions at once, and the NEU website currently says that decisions will be released “by” the 15th. I’m not complaining, that’s just very strange to me.

@Bozusaki That is based on past years. ED decisions come out in early December, EA decisions a week later. It is not rolling. The ED pool is small but the EA pool is huge. RD decisions come out in mid-March but top RD applicants will hear starting in mid-February. So in that sense it is sort of rolling for EA. Also a week or so before decisions come out top applicants may receive a “likely letter” in the form of an email stating how they are impressed with their application. Again this is based on past years and Northeastern may change things up. The only constants at Northeastern in the past 20 years are change and its commitment to experiential learning.

Applied EA for Behavioural Neuroscience. Now, for the wait…

Just got accepted for Electrical engineering/computer science major as a transfer student. School was amazing when I visited and I cannot wait to begin the adventure. Just waiting on my financial package from NEU hoping they give me something reasonable. I just have one advice for all you applicants tho … do not give up and don’t allow your decision letters discourage you. Would you believe I got rejected from Umass Amherst last year spring, and a year later I get accepted to Northeaatern. Keep ur head up high and just keep climbing till you reach your goal #gohusky’s

Best of luck … and I hope everyone gets the decision that would leave him/she smiling the whole day

My advice (as a current student) for once decisions roll in…

  1. Don't freak out if you get deferred. Many of my friends who are now even in honors or very tough majors were deferred at first.
  2. Save a copy of your financial aid award, and expect it to decrease by a couple thousand dollars. This seems to be par for the course, as far as need-based aid goes here.

Message me if you have questions! I was accepted EA last year as a political science major, but I started as an English major instead.

@whitespace What do you consider to be “tough majors”? I’ve heard mixed messages from admissions and students about major selectivity.

@Bozusaki I think @whitespace is talking academic difficulty, not major selectivity. The point bring that very capable students get deferred, and for Northeastern a deferral is not a sign to give up most hope.

@Bokusaki What @PengsPhils said is right. I don’t have any knowledge of admission by major. Obviously, what is a “difficult” major is going to vary with each person. For example, I would find engineering very tough, but several of my friends have mentioned that they would rather drop out than write as much as I do.

If I marked “open to NUin program” on my common app and applied ED, and they place me in NUin, is it still a binding agreement that i HAVE to study abroad for my first semester?

No, NUIn is not binding.

But if offered NUIn ED or EA that is a final decision, it will not be changed to Fall Boston admission.

Last year (first or second year of ED?) for any ED candidates who got NUin admission the ED agreement was not binding.

Are there any additional essays that we have to write once we submit our Northeastern application? I didn’t have to write anything besides my main essay when I submitted my app and I’m confused because NEU is a prestigious university so I’d expect there to be additional requirements…

There is the option to submit additional information through the applicant link. Adding supplementary required essays tends to lower the number of applicants and Northeastern is anxious to increase applications from outside its traditional New England and the Mid-Atlantic states market.

@TomSrOfBoston curious if you are speculating about the desire to attract outside of East Coast, or if that is an actual directive?

@binky17 The Common Data Set says that “Geographic Origin” is “Considered” in admissions decisions. So if you are from the South, Midwest or West it would be a slight advantage. Many universities are trying to increase their geographic diversity. Northeastern has opened graduate centers in Charlotte, Seattle, Silicon Valley and Toronto and all of them have attracted significant local media attention. So potential undergraduate applicants in those areas who hear about the school will not say “Where’s that?”

On the basis of past admissions, is there any specific date Northeastern would release admission decisions for EA candidates, or is it a rolling basis??
