is a 1410 on the new sat high enough to get me into Northeastern loll assuming that I have decent EC
well i got accepted but for the class of 2018…i feel like its not even worth it. any thoughts? they want me to take courses at an accredited college but if i go to that college then why would i transfer to NEU? i dont know, this is really bittersweet.
i don’t know how i didn’t get into NEU when i got a call from harvard for an interview because they liked my application. maybe because i applied for nursing and it’s super competitive? idk. would have rather gone here than harvard though
@aurorablock @1ittlebean How did you guys already hear from NEU? ED applicants?
@aurorablock - Well, that’s frustrating.
(This is an offer for Fall '18, not Spring '18?)
I agree with you that there’s not much point in heading off to another four-year university with the intention of bailing out in a year to move to NU. That kind of emotional limbo could easily sabotage what could otherwise be a wonderful experience at the college you attend. I guess there’s no harm in keeping the NU option open just in case, but IMHO it would be best if you saw that only as a remote Plan B in case you were genuinely disappointed in your experience at the school you attend - but only after giving that school every chance with the full intention of staying.
If it were me, and if I really had my heart set on NU, I would look for a true one-year program that would either be a fantastic experience or save me a ton of money. Living at home, working, and taking community college classes would satisfy the latter criterion. A cool gap year - perhaps abroad - that included enough academics to satisfy NU’s guidelines might satisfy the former. There are AFS exchange programs for HS postgrads, for example, and other gap year travel or study-abroad programs that grant college credit**. If you could assemble a truly worthwhile experience that you wouldn’t otherwise have gotten to do, you could treat it like a voluntary deferral. It’s something to consider.
But heading off to be a freshman at a college that thinks you’re staying, while harboring the intention of leaving in a year? Meh. A fresh start at a school that gives you a “clean” acceptance is better than that IMHO.
Sorry for the disappointment. I guess it’s good that you still have the NU option, but not a heartwarming response when you were committed enough to submit a binding ED application. Take your time and weigh your options; I’m sure you will have good ones!

Also, see this blog post about such situations: http://www.thecollegesolution.com/a-lousy-admission-offer-from-cornell/
@aurorablock What do you mean accepted for the class of 2018? I have heard of state schools having qualified applicants go to a CC for a year, but that is for a public school where tuition is not insane. The idea of going to some other school to then transfer to NU, where the tuition is really high seems kind of crazy/illogical.
@Tech2Be I think he means that he was given a spot in the class that will start at Northeastern in 2018. He has essentially been admitted with a required gap year.
Are you telling me schools like Northeastern are doing this now? Seriously?
@aurorablock Were you offered “guaranteed sophomore transfer”? That is something that several colleges (BU and Cornell for example) have offered applicants for several years now. This would be the first I heard that Northeastern is offering it.
@1ittlebean what were your stats?
Curiouser and Curiouser. ED had some interesting stuff - possible sophomore admission, nobody hearing anything about honors (even students with significant scholarships - saw one that was $22,000), NUin admits, some deferrals…can’t wait to see what EA brings!
Accepted into the honors program and got a scholarship!!! So happy right now
Does your notification state admission in Fall of 2018 or admission to Class of 2022? My son and a few of his classmates were admitted ED, and all indicate '22. I wonder if they assume 5 yrs with coops.
^^^ How confusing!
It does indicate the 5 year option, at least it has n the past.
@hes379 First honors college admit I’ve seen, congrats! Anything new about the program that you can see?
@hes379 congrats - what are your stats?
@hes379 stats would be very much appreciated, I’m an EA student pulling for a big scholarship and Honors especially!
@hes379 please let us know if there was any info on the new honors program. Thanks and congrats!
My D got in ED and NU in. She is thrilled. Congratulations to all who have been accepted! Good luck to those deferred. Keep on letting NU know how much you want to go there and keep on working hard!
