Official Class of 2021 Northeastern University Early Decision/Early Action Discussion

it means that i would be essentially transferring into NU as a sophomore. honestly, i really would rather just be at a school for four years.

yes it is a gap year but i have to fulfill certain course requirements at an accredited university.

@aurorablock don’t turn it down if you don’t have to pay anything right now. At the very least, it’s a decent backup if you decide you don’t love where you are next year for whatever reason.

So according to @aurorablock Northeastern now has “guaranteed sophomore transfer”. That’s interesting although I do not like that practice, even if Ivy league Cornell has been doing it for several years. .

That seems a very odd option for an ED application. I assume they waive the “binding” condition on the acceptance.

I feel that if the “Sophomore transfer” was an option, it should have been clearly listed on the application portal/website. All these kids went into this thinking they could receive “accept”, “deny” “defer”, “waitlist” or NUin…they were never told about 2018.

@DocBloor It is non-binding as is the NU In decision.

@DocBloor yeah its not binding im not going to turn it down right now, i have until May

I applied EA and just received a rather confusing letter cautioning me about the college process. It has four points on how to navigate the college process then at the end says not to hesitate contacting the office. What does this mean?

If someone who got the Fall, 2018 option could copy and paste the letter (minus identifying info) it may help. At Cornell and BU you accept that option but you are not committed, you are not required to transfer from your freshman college.

Same here. @srtb1999

Thank you for applying to Northeastern University. After careful review of your application and accompanying credentials, the
Admissions Committee is unable to offer you admission for the fall semester. However, in recognition of your academic potential,
we are pleased to offer you a special opportunity to enroll at Northeastern University for the Fall 2018 semester.
In order to be eligible to enroll in Northeastern University for the Fall 2018 semester, you must enroll at Northeastern University’s
College of Professional Studies or an accredited college or university of your choice and complete a minimum of 30 semester
hours of transferable, college-level academic course work. Remedial and developmental courses are not transferable. These
semester hours must be completed after high school graduation and you must earn a cumulative grade point average of a
3.0 or better. Course transferability is not guaranteed, so we strongly encourage you to familiarize yourself with our transfer credit
practices and our online transfer equivalency database before registering for classes.
We strongly recommend that you complete courses in the following areas of study. Please note that you must earn a letter grade
of C or better to be eligible to receive college credit for a particular course. Additionally, you must declare a major upon entry to
the university.
2 English courses
English Composition I, II (equivalent to ENGW 1111)
1 Social Sciences course
Psychology or Sociology
1 Humanities course
Philosophy or Religion
1 Natural Science course with Lab
Biology or Chemistry or Environmental Science
1 Mathematics course
Precalculus or higher
4 Elective courses
When you meet the requirements outlined above, you will be offered admission for the Fall 2018 semester. Failure to meet these
standards compromises your admission. To pursue this option, please complete and email (admissions@northeastern.edu) or
fax (617.373.8780) the enclosed contract by May 1, 2017 so that we may update our records.

Does the enclosed “contract” say you must transfer after freshman year or that it is an option? I cannot imagine it being required.

It sounds like she also has the option to enter fall 2017 at Northeastern’s College of Professional Studies if I’m reading that correctly. Do you know what that is TomSr?

It is/was a primarily part time division:

@srtb1999, @hetn99 My daughter also received that same letter about 3 weeks after she submitted her EA application. I thought it was weird at the time but just chalked it up to lack of coordination in the admissions process. We toured in the summer so we were on the mailing list. I assume Admissions has a timeline of when to send out specific reinforcing correspondence to prospective students.

Ok, so I guess she would have to want one of those majors or the ability to take core requirements for her major once she changes course sophomore year.

@hudsonmom02 @srtb1999 @hetn99 was this letter via snail mail? And can say more about “college process” language? Did it seem general or directed? Thanks

@TomSrOfBoston its not required. yeah what is SCPS?
