Hi everyone,
I also applied to Columbia for fall admission. I don’t think I have the best chance, but am hoping they’ll see the spark behind my actions and ambitions. I grew up on an extremely rural and isolated island in Hawai’i and had to work to provide for my family all of my life, so many opportunities were limited. I was accepted into UNC Chapel Hill this morning which was my back up, but they want a deposit by May 15th so I’m really hoping Columbia releases the decisions on the early side this time around! Also applied to Barnard, Duke and Queens College (accepted a month ago).
@deepcountrygirl good luck!! I don’t think many of us feel we have a good chance lol
does anyone know when decisions start coming out?
Based on past years thread from 2011-2015, here are decisions days 5/13, 5/10, 5/7, 5/13, 5/15
The man I spoke to over the telephone said early May, most likely the first week.
I think I was rejected, oh well.
Does anyone know if your chances differ if you transfer laterally, from another selective school to Columbia? I am trying to transfer from a NESCAC school.
As long as you express a good reason for transferring and if they feel you are a good fit, you will get in.
@PrincessMorales thanks for the optimism, at this point I feel hopeless. Best of luck.
hey guys ! anybody at a community college? I just got a letter in the mail from columbia GS and honestly the story told in that letter was my exact story…really resonated with me. what are the chances with a 3.84 GPA? i know it’s ivy…but why not.
also, how is financial aid?
@aimingforthesky I am at a community college and I applied as well.
I promised myself I wouldn’t revert to my high school obsession with browsing college forums. But here I am. Not here to give stats or anything, but I have two questions in particular…
a) In general, does anyone have any sense if being an ethnic minority contributes to a transfer application? My father is black and hispanic and my mother is caucasian. I am not a FA candidate and am applying from a private university-- in other words, I do not fall under the narrative of being a first generation low-income college student applying from a public university that just SO happens to be a minority.
I’m aware colleges like to keep a healthy rate of non-white students for their college profile that they release every year-- but at this point in the game, when admitting a student to a class with an already established minority percentage, are admissions officers trying to fill a similar gap? I’m aware that most content on college confidential is entirely based off of speculation, but it’d also just be interesting to have this conversation and see what everyone has to say.
b) My father is a graduate of Columbia Law. How does this play into applications? I guess this question is for anyone with first-hand experience or knows someone with similar circumstances. Another note: my father has not given any noteworthy sum of money to Columbia since he graduated.
Thanks!
@aimingforthesky @blackwidow22 I am also from a cc. I just received admission from ucla and now waiting for Columbia. I know a few people that were rejected from ucla but admitted to Columbia so that gives some hope!
are you apply GS or CC at Columbia?
Did anyone get a change in their portal where you don’t see the status of the application materials anymore?
Yep, I think it means they are reviewing our apps now.
@blackwidow22 you’re applying to Columbia too!
Really? This late? I think they started the review process a long time ago and should be wrapping up by now. The applicant pool is no where near the size for freshman applicants, and technically they are able to release decisions starting in less than a week so. Here’s to our decisions coming soon
Hey guys! Ahhh super nervous. I’m also transferring from a NESCAC school and everyday, my thoughts oscillate between “okay I think I have a chance, let’s not stress about it” and “holy moly I’m definitely not getting in, everyone is better than me, do I have to deal with the fiasco of getting rejected from a slew of schools like last year :-S” (my thoughts are primarily of the latter, however). But good luck to everyone! Hopefully good news will come our way
Yeah, once they remove that checklist they pretty much know who’s in and who’s not.
Either way, good luck to everyone! Remember, a letter doesn’t define who you are! Only you can!
