OFFICIAL Columbia University Class of 2017 ED Results

I hope not because I submitted mine on nov 2nd

I’m pretty sure that has no influence on Columbia university admission decision

lol… I’m only applying to Columbia ED, WPI EA, and UConn RD. All of my applications and supplements were finished since October 24th. If I get rejected by Columbia, I’m almost definitely going to UConn, because my parents don’t want me to go to WPI as it will probably be too expensive. They liked Columbia’s policy of no parent financial contribution for families with under $60k salary.

Anyway, I strongly doubt Columbia would discriminate against students who applied after November 1st. They extended the ED deadline for ALL students to November 5th, and for students living in areas affected by the storm, to November 11th.

^ I agree, I submitted my app on the extended deadline date (lol) and in the tracking system, it says my submission date was Nov 7th, a good two days after the deadline. I don’t think any of you guys will have a problem for turning apps in during Nov 1-5.

I live in the West Coast btw so Sandy didn’t even affect me.

I was told by my school counselors as well as private college counselors to apply by the Nov 1 deadline since we weren’t affected by Sandy. They all said it was not appropriate to apply later since we are on the west coast, and shouldn’t use Sandy as an excuse to submit later than the original deadline.

I don’t think one day later would do anything to chances of admission. Columbia specifically lengthened the deadline to Nov. 5th for all applicants not affected by the storm so it’s obviously not a problem for them.

@feedback411, did you submit early on the 5th or late towards the deadline on the 5th? Hahah I’m not sure if the time of day you submit makes any difference?

Guys, ED % is around 20%. However, when I went to Columbia, the admission officer said that ED is not much easier than regular and someone who gets in ED are most likely would’ve been able to get in regular. Then so many people asked "Explain the difference between 20 % and 7 %). He said lots of students who get in ED are atheletes and recruits, which boosts up ED acceptance rate significantly. So, without them, the ED acceptance rate should be around 13%.

Does it help to be a non-recruited athlete? Haha if only, then I’d have a chance. 2 varsity/club sports plus 2 other club sports. I doubt it’ll help though. Just another EC.

Sadly it is. I play varsity squash and am ranked i think 17th in the province. It’s just another EC for me too lol…

My school counselor also emphatically discouraged me from submitting after the Nov. 1 deadline (I’m on the West Coast.) There’s not really a precedent for this situation, but why do yourself the disservice of giving Columbia readers the chance to view anything about your application in a negative light? Seems reckless to me.

@ dessayer, why would it be a negative light if they extended it to the 5th for all students? I think that students in the hurricane had an additional extension.

Also I know that they extended it to the 4th last year due to a storm… Anybody know how that played out?

The anticipation is killing me. I just got an email for an interview, which should speed up my death

oh wow that’s late… did you submit your app relatively late, or does the interview time not depend on that at all?

Honestly, I don’t believe what the admission officers say. If it was HYPS SCEA, I might believe them but this is ED which is binding. Universities admit lot of strong applicants, knowing they will surely be attend Columbia. I think if there are 20 strong applicants in ED, Columbia admits about 5 students whereas they would admit 2 student out of 20 students in RD round, supposing they are all equally strong applicants. The only variable I don’t know is the percentage of recruited athlete. The binding application must boost the chance to certain degree supposing the applicants are academically qualified.

i’m waiting to hear from cc before i decide if i will!

@hobbesette when did you have your interview? mine’s wednesday!

Also guys sorry if I suck at this haha I’m new!

Is the 6th/7th decision date confirmed? I am going to call the admissions office tomorrow to see but that seems SO close… it’s literally next week
Being that Columbia was in the area directly affected by the storm, the processing may have taken longer (hence that one person who submitted on time but wasn’t processed until the 7th… whatever date they downloaded your materials on in Common App is more important). Also, the fact that many people submitted within the last few days of the extension may have slowed them down a bit. Nothing to worry about.
I don’t think recruited athletes significantly do anything to change the acceptance rate… I have heard from a number of people that this is a myth. The early admissions rates are higher (at non-HYPS schools) because the ED applicants are those who are most enthusiastic about the school (hence, the applicants are just stronger in general). Columbia is also notorious for admitting a bit less than half of its incoming class early, which is a huge portion.
