Yes, I agree. Columbia’s ED acceptance rate is nearly 3 times of RD acceptance rate which is unprecedentedly high among HYPSM early admission programs.

It’s not unprecedented for Harvard or Princeton. H and P have early acceptance rates of 18.25 and 20.89 percent, respectively.

Yes, but the difference is that EA doesn’t bind people to the school, so not everyone who is accepted will definitely go.

I’m getting more pessimistic as days go by. With this trend, I’ll be completely calm even if I get deferred or rejected. Just writing supplementary applications to other universities… every night seems to be every step to rejection well, it’s good that I’m not being nervous

I think HYP EA yield rate is very high though. Not like other EA because HYP is a dream school for anyone. I’ve seen some people get accepted to Yale with SCEA and not even apply to 1 university for the regular round.
Anyways, the number is just a number. There is no point of arguing/worrying about those now. We’ve already submitted ED and they are making decisions and decisions will be made soon , if not done so yet. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed.

The dilemma is, would you finish all the application essays before ED decision release? I’m have about 10 universities that I’m applying if I don’t make in ED round, but I’m not sure if I should devote huge amount of time and effort to write essays. I could use that time for school work and activities. But if I don’t make it in ED round, I’ll have to work all nights to make fine essays. What’s your case?

So I guess there isn’t any confirmation yet on the Dec 6/7 release date

I wish the results are out too. Because i still have some hope of getting in ED, writing the regular essays is not going too well (I don’t have the right mindset to write them). I want Columbia to tell me quickly. If i get in, so I can delete all the regular essays. If i get rejected or deferred, so I realize that I have to start working ferociously writing regular essays.

I’m not applying anywhere RD; I’ve already been accepted to my safety (Pitt), and have done my best to fall in love with that school so that I won’t be too disappointed if/when Columbia rejects me! I don’t have the time, money, or commitment to write out a million more essays for other top schools; Columbia is my number one and only one (I don’t feel any kind of connection with any other top schools, like I could get in!).
Sory for rambling on incoherently. Thought I’d try and rejoin the discussion somewhere.

Is someone in this thread going to call admissions office today to check on the Dec. 6/7 release date?

i read somewhere (it escapes me now) that about 160 of Brown’s early decision acceptees are athlete recruits. Seeing as Columbia is in the same athletic conference, possibly this is true also? In that case, subtracting 160 athletes the acceptance numbers would be around 440 accepted out of 3000, which is about a 14.6% acceptance rate. This is double the reg decision!

… I recognize that this is complete speculation but I’m bored : )

Canadian112, YES that’s what I meant. I’m in no mood or atmosphere to passionately write RD essays because of Columbia ED decision. I’m hardly making any progress for the huge remnant of essay works.

I just got off the phone with the admissions office. They haven’t set a date for decision release yet - she said they would post it on the admissions website when they do.

If they move it to mid december i will cry.

My friend who applied to cornell said that his website says it is mid-december. Well, I am pretty sure almost all Ivies release their result around the same time. So I am guessing it to be mid-december. dang it

They extended the deadline last year and got decisions out December 8th so maybe they’ll be out the 6/7. I guess it depends on how many people sent apps close to the last deadline.

@Pitt13 – I feel very similar to you. It surprises me how some people can apply to so many schools and have passion for all of them. All of mine is focused towards Columbia, and I hope that was clear in my application. I also acquainted myself with my Safety (UConn), so I won’t be as disappointed if (when) I get rejected.

So how is everyone passing the time between now and decision day?
/bad attempt at conversation

For me it’s mainly school, work, and band practice/gigs. Not much time outside of those three things!

School, ballet, lots of clubs, volunteering, and obsessing about columbia. Haha I don’t even think that I’ll be that sad if I don’t get in (I expect it) but the waiting is a killer! Plus I too lack motivation on my other apps. :)

@colum2017, there are lot of very fine universities with rigorous courses and similar aspects of Columbia university. Although Columbia can offer very fine education and the environment of NYC, other universities have their unique traits while providing equivalent or even better education in certain academics.
@Pitt13, Same for me. School work, band activities and gaming all day. I have no motivation to go to school or study hard though :(
