OFFICIAL Common Application Questions Thread

Do you mean things like the essays on schools' supplemental forms? I would assume those would be an advantage.

If you mean random things like every single minute detail about your parents and your school thats not required, I don't think it matters very much. just fill in everything you can

Where it says 'do you have any special talents or abilities' what would be some examples of this that would apply to this? I cant really think of anything but i dont want to leave it blank...

I was wondering the same thing. I mean, I have skills, but I wouldn't consider them special. They're more like things I'd list under the activities section.

if you play 3 varsity sports do you have to waiste 3/7 ec lines
or can you combine it all into one??

Where it has a section for smmer schools, programs, etc. can you put a summer program at a college that you paid for? Because I can't think of anywhere else where that would belong.

poloruler: i just used 3 lines for sports. it might be a plus though, because 3 lines dedicated to sports may show a strong passion. Besides, i don't think theres any other way to put it

So say I'm in 7 school clubs. I am obviously not going to use every single EC line for each individual club. On the other hand, these clubs show up on my highschool transcript, so maybe it's not necessary to put them in the app?

Also, if i'm class president, and it asks me to put down 7 major activities in order of its importance to me, and I make president #1, but president also shows up on my hs transcript, does it look bad that I'm wasting an EC spot for something that they already see?

also could an admin plz sticky this thread that would be excellent

Hmm, where is the summer program section?

I can't find the summer section you guys are talking about...I went to a kind of two-week science exploration program the summer after my freshman year, and I would like to include it.

so we can just put down the highest SAT scores we have, or should we include other takes. I took the SAT twice and the Math IIC twice. should i include the lower scores, or just put the highest of each two.
Well there's no point in not listing everything since the school will see all your scores through the official score report, plus, the majority of colleges will superscore it, furthermore, to me, not listing everything could imply you're hiding something.

Question: Is is to your advantage/against your advantage if you don't fill out the optional information section?
Well it's generally in your favor to fill out anything optional (with few exceptions), though not filling it out is not technically a disadvantage

Sorry, I can't find this, is it on another form than the main common app.

Hmmm, I would suggest listing them as three different activities. After all, one would assume that your participation in them would vary both by years of participation and amount of involvement (so grouping them would definitely make for some tricky writing). Furthermore, listing them separately immediately makes it visible that this is a passion of yours. But I assume you're asking this question because you have quite a number of activities in which you're involved in which case I would just say is the reason they only have you list seven is because they want you to list which ones are your priorities (don't feel pressured to list everything - personally, I left off at least five activities if not more, so...)

Yea, I would definitely put it there, unless you got some credit from the school in which case you would list in the entries below that.

I'm a little confused of what you're saying but it seems like you're implying that you have other activities apart from school clubs, or maybe not??? But just list your activities in order of importance to you. And it's not wasting a spot by listing president as #1 because you're telling the school that this activitiy is most important to you which they can't tell from seeing your transcript alone.

Summer programs is listed on the second page (Education Data) under information about your counselor.

For the ECs, I'd say just put down the 7 that are the most important to you.

Sandy: you are lucky that you don't have to waste all of the lines on clubs. But, I'd say to still put some of them on the application to show adcoms which ones were most important to you. =)

I'll answer a couple of discussion threads I've seen in here

Yes, list all activities separately. Unless one or two clubs meet together or something strange, they are meant to be listed separately.
1b. This goes the same for sports. There is an additional form for sports, but I believe that is for those attempting to be recruited.

Some ECs might have been placed on your transcript. You should still list the seven you think are most important in the EC, duplicating as necessary. There is no guarantee that an Adcom will see your original transcript, since many schools compute other GPAs and indexes. It is also important to show what priority you put on your ECs.

Whether to send a resume is dependent on the reason. The number one reason to send it is if you have a lot of activities that don't fit in the CA, but are still interesting nonetheless. An example from mine: I worked on a council for the State Senate Education Committee. There wasn't a lot of time devoted to it, so I didn't want to remove one of my more regular activites. This is a reason to send a resume. Just listing a bunch of clubs will more likely hurt you than anything.

Special Skills: This is far more general than people take it. Chocolate cake cooking, web site programming, three-point shots, brooming, yo-yo-ing, organization, whatever. Do not leave that field blank.

Optional information: if its optional, it cannot hurt you. I have a feeling that this is in regards to the race questions and similar. This is something that you need to decide yourself. I put down white on all of my applications, and did just fine.

Academics > Other secondary school

I think?

Also, what's up with the additional info section at the very end?

Yeah, I found the summer thing but I really don't like how they make us enter them. I'm really not taking a summer thing at a SCHOOL.

Anyway, the additional info is just what it is, additional info. Maybe if you have a reason why your grades dropped one semester. Or maybe why you didn't do a sport one year. Or anything else you can think of that you haven't included in your application up til that point.

so is this where we put the long list of clubs? I included only 1 club on my EC section, and that was math team. The rest, including some important ones like model UN, i haven't mentioned yet. Is this where they go, or are there other spaces for them?

Can you write different essays for different school?
I don't mean the essays on the supplements but the Common App Long Essay. Or do I have to send the same app to all school? (I'm applying online)

Attach a sheet of paper if you need more than 7 ECs

If I only did a sport for 1 year (but it took 15 hrs/wk and 10 weeks total), should I include it?
