OFFICIAL Common Application Questions Thread

that is a fantastic idea. although i'm reluctant becuase i hate snail mail and I don't have much to change for each university.
Most schools "highly reccommend" an online submission. But I don't think it will decrease your chances any. It may take longer for the college to process a printed app thou

That is why I worry... They highly recommend online submission. I don't want to make them MAD at me or anything. I might HAVE TO submit a paper version, so I don't have to deal with a locked application. :(

I apologize if this has already been asked but I filled out the basic info for the Common App online and when I printed the teacher evaluation, my name and addresses was also filled in. But for the signature to waive my access to the material, my name was typed. Do I have to sign it or is the typed name ok? Thanks in advance

my essay is 1200 words...
I tell a story and everything fits together perfectly
I hate this

"Once you have submitted your Common App to any institution, your application will be locked and you will not be able to make any changes to it."

This means it is locked just for that school that you have submitted it to, right? I can't believe the CommonApp could have changed so much since last year. My daughter was able to save several versions of her app for different schools, giving each a unique name, and slightly different content for each depending on what she wanted to highlight.

This is a complete policy change for the common app, and I personally think it is really wrong. People should definitely write to the common app and tell them so :-)

Meanwhile, re:MichaelNKat's suggestion of sending the printed version - that only works if you plan to take the blank pdf forms and edit them with a pdf editor, or by hand. If you print your application thru the CA sie, there will be a watermark that says "application copy" across the page.

They really seem to want you to use the common app as a common app!

I don't think the whole work experience vs. activities thing for internships really matters that much to a university. Seriously...it's about what you did there, not how much you were getting paid...

no, the entire thing is locked, and you cant change anything for another school. its really unfortunate. i wish it stayed how it was last year.

That's awful! D #2 is a little late in getting organized and she just started the app on line, so I haven't really had a chance to look at it.

So if you apply EA to a few schools, you can't even update information for Regular admission?

Aww man. Thanks for the heads up, anotherparent!

RatedPG: From what I've read, no you cannot update info at all once it has been submitted. :(

I'm planning on submitting the common app online, but i realize that you should have a resume listing all your ec's, awards, etc, and do i just mail that in?? i'm a bit confused...

also what's the word limit for the main essay?

wila - you can attach your resume on the additional info section I think. you just upload your .doc file.

yeah, you cant change anything. its ridiculous. im not applying ed/ea, but i definitely feel bad for those who are.

My S's GC returned to him his secondary school report because she felt he incorrectly filled in the credits on his courses. My S filled in for example AP English as .5 cr in semester 1 and .5 in semester 2. The GC said it must be listed as 1 cr in semester 2. Which is correct? I can't find any instructions regarding this. We think it looks better .5 and .5., but he wants to do it correctly, so any opinions?

This is a question on how to report sports on the common app. I have been on many sports teams, including varsity teams for my hs. However, I don't want to waste one of my precious 7 activities by listing each sport twice- one as a varsity sport and one as an OTHER sport activity. Should I just combine all my teams into one sport? If so, how do i indicate that I also participate on my varsity team?

i second savvymoms question... do i list it as .5 and .5 or 1 and 1

I totally and completely HATE the new version of Common Application. They're crazy. I don't want to not be able to edit my application after I send it to my ED school. I might have new activities, awards, scores, etc. to add! It's so annoying to have to send these extra updates to colleges later on, if I don't get in ED. Agh.

^^^^yeah, i feel really bad for you. luckily i am applying to all my schools RD.

I don't understand; do we send in our common applications to the schools we want to apply, and then they will send us additional requests for additional essays? doesn't that defeat the purose of the whole "commmon app"- "saving time" deal. or am i missing something
