OFFICIAL Common Application Questions Thread

D decided not to even use Common App, would rather just fill out each schools app. Most of her schools require supplements anyway, so the new version of the common app is not even worth it if you can't update after applying ED. This way everyone gets the information they require, no need to send in any additional stats after the fact.

Too bad, last year it was a wonderful tool.

Yeah, but my ED school only uses the Common Application, which isn't as convenient. They don't have their own application. Should I just use the paper version? xD

for sports, if you are on varsity one year but not for 3 years, then do you put that as a varsity sport or a non-varsity sport??

If you want to use the paper version - be aware that it means printing out the blank PDFs from the site (without logging in). Then you need to use either a PDF editor to enter the data, a typewriter, or enter by hand.

If you enter the data in the CA site, and then print out the partially filled out forms, then you will have a water mark that says "Application Copy" on the form.

You loose a lot of convenience by not using the online forms in thr CA.

It may help you to go to each individual school's website and download the common application through their website. i have found that when I do this, there is no watermark saying "application copy" on the paper. I'm not sure if this is the case at every college, but it is at some

Does anyone know if what CNCA is suggesting actually would work. So you are filling out the common app, but through the college website? And you would just download each time through each school?

That is a blank copy. You can get that at the common app site too (before you log in). It is just if you want to print out the completed form, and just put replace it with a different essay, or change a few things.

I dont belelive there are any schools that allow you to fill out the CA locally.

It is basic- you have two choices. Fill out the form at the CA website, and submit it electronically, OR print out the blank forms and fill them out by hand or with a pdf editor of some sort.

My son has done academic decathlon in 9th, 10th and 11th grade. He plans on trying out for it again and is very likely to make it since he won 2nd place overall in his region the last 2 yrs and 3rd place his freshman year. What do people put down on apps for activities they know they will do but the activitiy hasn't started yet? He's applying early and he needs to list his activities on the common app.

Thanks

On the 150 word activity essay, is there some leeway with wordcount? Like would 180 be okay?

When I copy and paste into the box there there's still like 2300 characters left..

I have been told that going over TOO much isn't good. 30 isn't too bad though.

yeah, 180 is fine.

When you submit you application, do the colleges see the other colleges you have sent it to that are on your common app college list?

does anyone know???? see post #408

guitars, I don't think it matters too much. Technically, you probably should not put it, since there is still the possibility no matter how unlikely that you won't make it. Colleges will see you've participated in it throughout high school already anyway. But if you do put it, it's justifiable.

JohnC thank you so much. It's a tough decision. If anyone out there has an opinion or can tell me what they've done, I'd appreciate it. these colleges are so competitive that it's hard to know what they want.

Is there a way just to fill out the adobe pdf version of common app and still send it online? Instead of filling everything out on the website?

Thanks

For Extracurricular Activities section, should I put things like HOBY or ARML? These take place once a year -- I don't participate in them regularly year round. I'm afraid it will ridiculous to put 1 week/year. Should I just put them in the Additional Info section?

P.S. it's too hard to skim thorugh this gigantic thread. I propose starting individual threads concerning the indivisual sections of the common app, while still keeping a general thread.

there is a "search this thread" button at the top. thats what i use.

I am a dual citizen (only because my mother was english) and was born in new york and went to school there until 5th grade. I have been at a boarding school in england for the past 6 years.
I have houses in both countries but my main one is in new york. If I put down my london address on the common application do I count as an international student?
