OFFICIAL Common Application Questions Thread

Issue/Question: Can you submit a different personal essay to different schools?
Response: You cannot submit a different personal essay to different schools. The document you upload in response to the personal statement question will be the same for all submitted applications. Note: for those schools that have an online supplement and additional essay questions, you can, of course, provide school-specific responses to those topics.

Mark, Just to clarify. There's a delete option for the uploaded essay. Couldn't you upload and send a personal statement to one school, and then go back, delete the essay, upload a different one, and then submit the application with the new essay to another school?

I understand that it is not possible to submit the application to more than one college at the same time and change the essay within the group, but there is still a delete button for removing essays in between submissions.

If you're sending your common app in online how do you send your resume with it? and ...if you want additional reccomendations from people other then teachers, how would you go about doing that?
thanks!>>

If you have enough room, consider entering your resume in the "additional information section" on the online app. If not, send it the old fashioned way, through snail mail, being sure to put your name, address and social security number on each page. Colleges will make sure it gets into your application folder.

may i suggest reading through posts before asking your q - the redundancy level is fast reaching the "annoying" level

Should you put info about selfstudying APs (senior year) in the additional info section?

go for it. I put selfstudying info there, and also reported my AP grades there.

I did extrememly poorly on my Chemistry SAT, but in the last two years of chemistry class I never slipped below the highest grade in the class, so I assumed my class would be a microcosm for the country when I took the SAT, but when I took the SAT, I did not know how to do anything on it. I was only able to answer 20 out of 70 questions and I ended up scoring in the 11th percentile. Should I explain my score on the extra information section or will that sound like I'm making excuses by saying that I had a poor teacher who did not teach us anything whatsoever.

actually, I would get a good SAT Chem prep book, and study for the chem satII, then retake in the fall. It sure cannot hurt.

that's what i call grade inflation. It's mostly your fault. You should have actually picked up a study book and looked at some of the problems. I doubt colleges will really give you any sympathy but you can say what you want in the additional info section.

If I did some activities BEFORE highschool, in which I earned awards/medals, but discontinued it after eighth grade, should I even bother to add that to my application?

Colleges are mainly interested in hearing about your most recent and on-going activities, so most students shouldn't include anything from middle or elementary school, especially if they didn't continue those activities in high school.

The one exception might be if you won some award at a national level in middle school - for example, the National Spelling Bee.

But, in general, students should focus on activities and awards during their high school years, not middle and elementary school.

CC--is it just me, or is the common app completely screwed this year. Particularly the supplement applications.

Is it me alone, or is it impossible to fill out the Yale supplement online--which according to Com. Ap MUST be done--because I cannot access the yale supplement while logged on!

Someone, seriously needs to look into this, or tell me where my error is!

For the 150 EC prompt, is it bad if I don't write about a club I started up for senior year? I'm starting up Amnesty Int'l. for my senior year next year, but I kind of would rather talk about cross country for the prompt. That, and I don't think I can write a sufficient enough 500 word essay for starting it up either.

What do you think I should do? Both are equally important right now, but cross country has a bittersweet place in my heart.

ped-nurologist,
I don't think it is up yet bc I just clicked on Supplements and Yale's didn't come up.

special skills/talents: can I put that I can lick my elbow? haha jk

when choosing your subject test scores does it matter whether you select Math 1 or Math 1C?
thank you

1 and 1c are the same, just a different vintage. Same with II and IIC. They used to be called IC and IIC, and now they are I and II. If you are capable of doing the math, definitely take II

Koolmaria, But they are...check out the downloaded forms section and the 2012 app will be there, you just cant access it logged in which is a serious problem as far as online submissions are concerned.

This pertains to Harvard and Stanford also.

ped-neurologist, this is off topic, but i noticed your user name, and just wanted to say that i plan on being a pediatric neurosurgeon. :)....what a coincidence, sorta :/

Hey, I'd appreciate it if you guys could answer some questions:

Why can't I look up the CEEB code for any universities in China? In fact, China isn't even listed as a country in the "look up" list. (I want to indicate where my parents went for undergraduate study.) What should I put instead?

What exactly is an "Academic Honor"? Is it any honor related to a school subject (i.e. writing/literature, math, science), even if it is not necessarily affiliated with one's school? Would awards earned in clubs count?
