Thanks! I would just strongly advise to maintain the highest possible GPA she can, take all of the pre-reqs she can if applicable for her major (i.e. business), and complete as many if not all of her GRE’s before transferring. Obviously, a more rigorour transcript will help as well.
One thing that I can confirm per my attendance yesterday at the transfer student orientation is that more students came from VA CC’s than anywhere else (most accepted from NOVA & TCC). I can’t recall anyone being accepted from an out-of-state CC, so that may be a bit of food for thought.
I am a VA resident.

Ill have to second that liberty, at Tech it seemed like most of the students for transfer orientation were from VCCS schools (according to Tech 50% of transfers are). I dont mean to discourage anybody as there were plenty of OOS transfers there as well, besides from what Ive seen that majority of students at TCC are transferring to ODU, and I imagine in NoVa and Richmond that top choice is GMU and VCU respectively. In my two years Ive met very few trying to go to UVA, WM, JMU, or Tech.

Off the top of my head, if I remember correctly the following is the number of students from each/some of the VA CC’s attending W&M this fall:

J. Sargeant Reynolds - 2
Piedmont - 2
TCC/TNCC? - 16?
NOVA - 18+

Also, I agree with msc261 as MOST of the students I came across while at JSR (in Richmond) planned on transferring to VCU (actually probably 8.7/10 were).

hey…if possible, could you guys also post what community college you got into? I live in California so the community colleges that are offered to me are Palomar, Miramar…etc…so I’m wondering if what community colleges we go to also affect which colleges we get accepted in…cause so far, I like a lot of the colleges that I saw some of you guys get accepted to…and a 4.0 GPA too… WOW!

As a parent reading this, I find it incredibly encouraging!!

To those of you who slacked off in HS, can you say what finally got you to put it into gear? What it something in particular (eg, an event, a mentor, finding a passion, etc.), or was it maturity and/or the realization that you needed to pick it up and advocate for yourself? I see my S (a HS sophomore) possibly following this path, so I am very interested.

Thanks!

Thanks!

BfloGal,

I’m glad that you’re encouraged by these results, I am too! As a current community college student and upcoming applicant myself, I can say that going to community college was the best decision of my life.

In high school, I wasn’t the greatest student; although I certainly had a lot of potential, I simply transferred my effort/energy to other things–sports, parties, girls, etc. For the first two years, I was an average student–by CC standards–at about a 3.3-3.5 GPA; with those grades, I was sure that I could get into a mid-level UC school, which by my standards at the time, was fine. However, my junior year, I completely gave up on school entirely and focused all of my efforts on my social life; and although my social life certainly flourished, my grades suffered. Badly. In fact, during the second semester of my junior year, my GPA was at a 2.0.

Although I had picked it up my senior year, I knew that my “dreams” of going to a respectable UC were over, and I decided to end up enrolling at a community college–and like I said, it was the best decision of my life. I actually took my academics seriously, and to this point, I currently have a 4.0 GPA and am applying to USC, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and Bowdoin College–all schools I could never even dream about coming out of high school!

You asked what finally made us put it into gear, and take things seriously. Well, for me, it was this single question: If I don’t take things seriously now, when am I ever?

Of course, everyone has a different story, but I thought I’d share my two cents with you. Going to community college is an excellent choice, especially for those students that could use a second chance. I know I did, and I’m glad I took it.

Thanks MartinSMC! Your HS GPA is much higher than I suspect my S’s will be (I’m guessing a 2.8 or so), so I am hoping that he will at some point (soon) start picking it up. Are you working while in school?

Best of luck to you! I hope you get accepted to all of them so that you will have the enviable dilemma of having to choose which one to attend!

Don’t worry about your son’s GPA right now; however I think the important thing for him to be able to do is to write well as well as understand the concepts of higher-level math. If he can do those things, he’ll be fine in community college.

Also, for the first couple of months in CC, I wasn’t working; however, I’ve been interning at a talent management company since June and I’m loving it. It certainly is harder to balance out the workload, but it certainly is doable. Hope this helps.

This makes me really happy because I’m transferring from a Uni to a CC near me and am hoping to get into a good college after.

As a current community college student, this thread gives me a lot of hope! Congrats everyone.
