Official Cornell Class of 2019 Early Decision

@manas1997 I am Indian as well, and my parents say the same thing. What type of Indian are you?

when does first quarter end for you guys?

@Sushanth24‌ That’s not true. Most prominent Indians who have moved here are from IIT. From hedge fund managers on wall street to CEOs in silicon valley, IIT hosts some of the greatest minds in the world. To say that most of them suck at other things is incorrect.

@superdub, q1 ended a couple of weeks ago and my grades were sent. Term 1 ends in mid/late Jan. and it is the same as q2.

Alright there are 2 million new engineers every year in India and people graduating from the top IIT’s are 10,000 .I agree with you, IIT is the true indian heritage of education but the top chunk are the "self made man " kinda people . Only the top 12 % take up the research or leadership jobs . Being indian, I am proud of them . My uncle is an IITian ( class of 2007 IIT Madras ) he thinks it was more about himself and where as here in the USA it more about the community. I am more into research and exploration . Its too radical for me to say that most of the IITians suck at other things but they do have less exposure than any other graduate from here . - ALL MY friends in IIT back in India are super smart kids - ( Only thing which makes difference is less opportunity and less exposure )

Are interviews school specific? Because someone in my hs who applied to CAS got an interview but I (applying to CALS) did not get anything yet…

@jamesjunkers just based on location as far as I can tell for the ones who don’t require an interview. If there are alum’s available in your region you’ll probably be contacted to set up an interview, or conversation because most of the colleges at Cornell dont like the word “interview.”

@jamesjunkers, assuming the adcomms are divided up by college (each college has its own admissions), then I think so. They aren’t interviews (only a couple of colleges have formal required interviews), they are meetings or “conversations” as @BPearlman97 said ^, and adcomm for that college matches up the app and alum based on geography. Someone from my hs applied to CoE and hasn’t been contacted yet, so it can’t be purely geo.

My wife and I are both CU Alumni and we volunteer to do the “interviews”. The way the process works is that admissions sends information to a regional alumni who coordinates that area. Then they send out the names to different individuals, who in turn contact the applicant. They try to match up by major, or at least college. They aren’t formal interviews, and really more about creating personal contact for this process. The alumni can answer questions, and it gives the applicant an opportunity to add any additional information that might not have been in the application. It really isn’t supposed to be part of the admissions process. It’s really more informational. My wife and I aren’t doing an ED applicants, because we have a daughter applying ED, and they don’t want any appearances of conflicts. The info just came to the regional people at the end of last week. You’ll probably be contacted shortly if there is an alumni available.

@oldcu91, just wondering what sort of additional information adcomm is referring to? It has only been about 2 weeks since ED applications were submitted, other than Q1 grades (which my GC sent), have you often been provided with additional info during your contact meetings with applicants, and if so, I would appreciate elaboration? Also, what do you mean that they are not really supposed to be part of the admissions process? It is my understanding that there is a write up from the meeting, and it is passed on to adcomm, but am I mistaken?

@oldcu91, just wondering what sort of additional information admissions is referring to? It has only been about 2 weeks since ED applications were submitted, other than Q1 grades (which my GC sent), have you often been provided with additional info during your contact meetings with applicants, and if so, I would appreciate elaboration/example(s)? Also, what do you mean that they are not really supposed to be part of the admissions process? It is my understanding that there is a write up from the meeting, and it is passed on to adcomm, but am I mistaken (otherwise, the point is rather fuzzy and does add some stress to us applicants)? Thank you!

It’s really about the Alumni being ambassadors for the University, and sharing our experiences, as well as answering any questions. If you either forgot to put something in your application, or something new has come up (a new honor for instance) it could be added in during the interview. There could also be some other issue - hardship for instance that the applicant might want known. Remember these are also done for RD, when there might be more time between when the application was submitted and when interview takes place. It’s also to share our love for the University, which is more relevant to RD than ED (ED has already decided on this school). It’s supposed to be informal, so the applicant should just be themselves.

@connect1234 yes there is a follow-up report, but it can’t be very long. It isn’t designed to recap everything that is already in the application. They all have to be back to the University by Dec 1st.

Thank you, @OldCU91, and good luck to your daughter.

My to-do list lists every item I need to submit but I’ve submitted them all…should I be worried?

Woohoo! I finally got an email from an alum!!
