Official Cornell Transfer 2011

@transfers2010 If you didn’t know that acceptance rates vary among the colleges of Cornell than I think you didn’t do enough research about the school and your essay was not specific enough.

@transfers2010

They are. Not sure about NY CC’s, but GT’s certainly skew 'em. But they prefer a student with a 3.4 who demonstrates considerable interest to a 4.0 who’s just trying to “backdoor.” That said, you might find another Cornell school has a great program for you. Also working against you was the fact that they have so few places for spring admission. Perseverance will serve you well here. Good luck with your fall app!

Thanks everyone.

I think weezyf is correct. ILR is largely based on how you would fit into the curriculum. I have a 3.4 overall, but within courses that related to ILR I had a 3.6. Regardless, I realize that the level of intelligence is a lot different between a 3.4 and 4.0 but its obvious that is not the only thing Cornell, especially the ILR school looks for in their applicants.

The things that helped me:
-My essay were based on my interests and how they literally perfectly matched the ILR program.
-My grandfather was a professor at Cornell A&S. But my family does not donate regularly.
-I met with Ronald Seeber (Vice Provost of ILR school) and he wanted me to put his name down on my application as a reference.
-My EC’s are pretty interesting - eagle scout, private pilot with 300+ mile solo flights, SCUBA diver with 25 logged dives, internship with international company planning summer event.

I realize many will think that I got in because of my references and I respect your opinions. They without played a part, I will not deny that.

Ultimately, I think it was everything else I had to offer that overshadowed my less than perfect grades.

Thanks everyone. I hope you all get positive letters from their respective colleges.

I knew that acceptance rates differ among Cornell schools. The admissions officers at CAS said that they were planning to accept 40-50% of spring transfers, so I applied there, thinking that its acceptance rate was the highest among Cornell’s schools.

I think CAS accepted a fair amount of transfer but a majority was from the NY community colleges of which they have transfer agreement with. Also, I was a recruiter before so I can understand the CAS admission’s perspective. During my last job, sometimes I have to reject some great candidates just because I don’t think they will fit well in the position. Personally I think everyone from 3.3 to 4.0 is basically in the same range of academic capability, it helps a lil bit if you have a higher GPA but it doesn’t matter that much. At the end of the day, as our friends say, it’s all about fit. I frankly congratulate all our friends here and I agree that Cornell made a great decision accepting you.

The only thing that makes me sad is the overwhelming number of students being accepted from NY community college through the agreements. Of course I understand that those students also worked so hard. But it’s kinda unfair somebody just have to take this course and that course and get this score and that score and get admitted. Do they really fit for CAS? We can’t know. The answer is “maybe”. I know Cornell has her reasons but still i would take it far better if they at least admit 50% of real external transfer and 50% from their transfer agreement. Not 90% from transfer agreement and 10% real external. :(

I would love to be rejected in order to make the space available to people of great academic capabilities and perfectly fit such as Harvardhop, cutie, kev, ithacakid, weezy, isralov … But of course I don’t find it comfortable giving up to people who “maybe” more fit than me :(

^ CAS only accepted 6-7 spring transfers this year.

And there is a huge difference between a 3.3 and a 4.0, and admissions statistics bear this out.

Hey Guys, Quick Question.

How strict is the AEM school on prereqs? Say you dont have the year of Bio (only 1 semester) and no Statistics (will take in the summer) for a 55+ unit transfer (Junior status i guess).

I could just as easily just do Economics but AEM would be first choice. Much appreciated.

umm i had all the prereqs completed and i was accepted if that means anything?

Hey guys, I applied to Cornell ILR for the spring 2011 semester, I still haven’t heard back from them, when I called they said I would find out the begging of December, and today is Dec 1st. I’m wondering if everyone that applied to ILR will find out the begging of December of if thats just me. Please let me know,

@Honest
Hey I was notified by phone at first but I just received my packet today. You should hear soon. If you get a big red folder you’re golden!

congrats kid91, i have other questions

did you get an email as well or no?
did they randomly called you and said you were admitted?
Did self service account changed after you were admitted or does it still says “your file is complete and has been sent to the admissions staff for review”? and it did change, how long after you were admitted did it take to change?
do you know what is the quickest way that i will find out on?
thanks for the info

Your help, comments/thoughts are appreciated. I was also wondering whether I have a better shot of getting in as a Biology major or a Biology & Society major. Like them both, am planning for med school so the major I actually pursue won’t impact me much as I will be taking tons of science courses anyway.

– Also do you know if these decisions are on a rolling basis? As in, lets say I submit my app in January, does this mean that I will find out whether I got in maybe mid-late march? I was wondering because from previous years’ thread, I see that people got their decision around like March 24th…that seems ridiculously soon!

bump! please…

this thread is almost dead :(
