Reflection

Strengths: Academics (I assume that’s a major factor in engineering), 2nd year university honors math course.

Weaknesses: Essay maybe. No major awards. International Asian Male for engineering.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Grades (however, 33 ACT is just within range for CoE) + EC that stood out (ie: aviation)

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Comments:
While most people say the most important factor is the essay, I still think those will only push you over the edge to be accepted. Grades are what will be able to kill you if they’re too low (at least for engineering, probably less important for hotel or AAP). Keep those grades up and write a solid essay!

There is no bare minimum GPA because they know the rigor of your school.
They look very hard at fit. I know that is difficult to believe but trust me, they do.
You should also try some how to be different. Different is very good.

Well my D got accepted yesterday to the College of Human Ecology (Human Development major). Her SAT’s were average to below 710 CR 640 Math 590 Math II Subject test 640 World History. She had 3 B’s and the rest A’s on her HS transcript. Classrank of 7 out of 156. None of her EC’s matched her major. We have no one in our family who went to Cornell or is affiliated with the college. Based on this we had a number of people on this forum tell (or insinuate) that she didn’t have a very good chance. What I’ve learned is that your stats will get you in or out of the conversation (with admissions), but your essays & letters of recommendation seem to be the most heavily weighed factors. Some things that stood out in her letters of rec were: 1) Interest in making the group better. 2) High leadership as bestowed by faculty & peers (class president, captain of varsity team) 3) Her GC compared her with other students our HS has sent to Ivy League schools in terms of characteristics that predict success 4) How highly respected she is by her peers. Her essays just revealed who she was…which in my eyes is everything her letters of Rec said she was

I must agree with csdad. If you look at my stats, there is nothing that would make the adcom go “ahhh, we want that student”. But I think my essays were pretty good and really showed who I am. I think I underestimated the importance of the essays. But heads up to students who are going to be applying next year, make sure your essays are good. Spend a good amount of time writing and thinking about it. You won’t regret it.

I agree - the power of the essays and recommendations is really what got my daughter in. She is a good student with a strong transcript, but I think her personal writings were what put her above the pack. She went to classes at Cornell during our last visit and wrote about how she chose what she thinks she wants to study there. Her essay was very introspective and gave them a glimpse into the person she really is. We worried about her SAT’s, but they were buoyed by her GPA, SAT 2’s, and AP scores. When the admissions people are looking at piles of while paper with black writing, I think it’s the essays and recommendations that make these students come to life. Also - an intense desire to attend the University needs to be conveyed. I believe Cornell is sick of being the “also ran” compared to the other Ivy League schools - they enjoy seeing that a student wants to be in Ithaca above all else.

You know - depression is a serious illness effecting many of our young people today. I know you have it under control and that’s a good thing. It’s treatable today with counseling and medication, which is all a great thing. My guess is that Cornell was concerned with the recent suicides on their campus. You are probably not a risk for that, but they aren’t sure…I know you will find a place that you excel at. A year from now, you will see that and will thank Cornell for making this rough choice. You’re an amazing candiate.

General Comments:

Always believe in yourself and don’t lose hope.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey guys,

Can I make the Facebook group for us all?
Specifically Engineering (I want to see who we all are!)?

Also, I see a group titled, “Cornell Class of 2015” but after clicking on a few names, some of them had Cornell '14…
Is this the group…?

What were you going for - your major?
You have to be really interested in a field of study and then work hard to get into that major.
Your scores are excellent (waaaay better than mine) and everything else is fine.
As for SAT I, I think you should take it as one of my friends only sent in his ACT but didn’t have much luck.

I just got my acceptance letter. Pretty quick.

Congrats to everyone who got accepted!

FortheWolf (awesome username btw), you mean you got the letter in the mail today? and if so where do you live (not precisely, obviously, but near ithaca? or at least in NY?)
