Teacher 2: Chinese Teacher, talked about how much progress I made and said I was his best student in 32 years of teaching. Explained how well I took advantage of my time in China.

Counselor Rec:
Pretty good, it’s a smallish school and we write a lot of reflections so he had a lot of material to use.

Additional Rec:
n/a

Interview:
Talked with an ILR alum for about an hour. He happened to work at the DA I worked at, so that was fun. I talked about picking my high school (it’s well known for being tough and I was accepted at all of the elite schools in the city), learning how to learn in the context of studying Chinese, using my time efficiently while in China, giving back to others, and so on.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: ILR
State (if domestic applicant): NY
Country (if international applicant): US
School Type: Private, Small, Catholic, Extremely Competitive, Top 5 Nationally
Ethnicity: White
Gender: M
Income Bracket: 100-200k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection:

given the debate on affirmative action I’m really happy that I got in because it really feels like I did it on my own merits.

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Studying Chinese from a non-chinese background, fit for ILR in terms of extracurricular activities
Weaknesses: Low GPA early in high school
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Good standardized test scores, clear strong upward trend in grades, NSLI-Y probably was pretty big
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: waiting to hear back from Fordham; doesn’t really matter unless my aid package is terrible
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: probably NSLI-Y or my personal statement topic
