Reflection
Strengths: ACT, I’ve taught myself how to rebuild engines and fix cars; worked on real life engineering projects; creative
Weaknesses: Never improved poor SAT IIs, poor essays, electives were all music and art
Why you think you were rejected: I guess the Cornell Symphany Orchestra didn’t need another Double Bass player, but seriously, stupid USN&WR rankings put big emphasis on students admitted from the top decile. My class rank and SAT IIs hurt my AI. All that, plus being from a public HS in the Mountain West and applying RD put my chance of acceptance at close to zero.
Where else were you accepted:CUBoulder, Colo School of Mines, Colorado State, University of Illinois

General:

I’m a bit disappointed. Only Ivy I was interested in and I thought it a perfect fit, as I had hoped to do either mechanical with a renewable energy focus, especially microhydro applications, or do kind of a civil thing, concentrating on engineering river systems to optimize fisheries

Now I can concentrate on my future as an aerospace engineering major at the University of Colorado in the People’s Republic of Boulder, where the sun shines over 300 days a year and free buses to the ski areas run every weekend. Sure glad I put down that housing deposit. But I’ll be keeping my CORNELL HOCKEY Tshirt

I had excellent GPA, excellent SAT II subject tests , excellent ACT. excellent recs. ZERO EC’s

Well: at least I still have my Cornell shirt just in case I ever need a rag to clean my toilet off with.

I hate you cornell. I cant blame you for your rejection, but at least you could have sent a paper rejection letter. online is so impersonal, i mean i cant even burn the rejection letter now, and if i print it to burn it, it’ll feel pointless.

i mean you get like 36000 applications a year, for each one you are payed 100 dollars. thats 3,600,000 they bring in right there. Then you get 50,000 a year from every single person that attends. Then you get some additional money from gift shops, buying books, etc. Are you seriously telling me you cant afford to send paper to everyone?

[] Additional Rec: nope
[] Interview: went rather well - showed my portfolio and talked about why I am interested in architecture
[li] Portfolio: I prepared a very large variety of artwork (paintings and drawings; real and fantasy) but made sure to include freehand drawings (graphite, colored pencils, pastel, penwork, charcoal). Included some figure drawing and how I used them to create a cubist study to show my ability of creative analysis. Overall, I made sure the technique was good and talked a lot about design/composition in the short summary blurb that accompanied each piece. Included 20 pieces? (max number)
[/li]

Reflection[ul]

[] Strengths: Portfolio, essays, high test scores, high gpa
[] Weaknesses: Honors/awards, volunteer
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think the interview and portfolio for architecture both make a very big difference, since the school judges you based on your creative abilities. Also, in my essays, I conveyed my passion for art/architecture.
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: MIT ED (accepted), UT Architecture - Engineering (accepted with scholarships), Rice Architecture (accepted), Stanford (rejected - I will never know why in the world I applied to Stanford… an asian parent thing?), Princeton (waitlisted - sad, since I was born in NJ!)
[/ul]
General Comments: Really happy about Cornell - I feel top architecture programs place great emphasis on the art and creative abilities of the applicant. I liked how Cornell took the portfolio very seriously - had to print everything out and prepare a physical portfolio. I also learned that if a school rejects you, it doesn’t mean you are unqualified - it may mean you just don’t fit into that school. I really do not think I would fit at Stanford at all I’m glad I got rejected from there, but accepted at these other awesome architecture programs (especially Cornell!!)
