Reflection
Strengths: My essays were definitely gold. I think that my unique interests combined with my clear interest in the school made me stand out as an applicant.
Weaknesses: Probably grades/SAT. They’re obviously good, but they’re so average good that I don’t think they did anything for me but show that I am good enough to apply.

[] Job/Work Experience: None
[] Volunteer/Community service: None
[] Summer Activities: None
[] Essays: Supplement for college of engineering. I wrote about an innovation of mine in great detail, and my passion for chemistry was genuine and permeated throughout my essay. Common app main essay was also science-related and passionate.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Teacher #1: AP Chem teacher, fantastic letter. Said I was one of his best ten students in his 28 year career. Teacher #2: Precalc H teacher, no idea I didn’t read it. I was a mediocre math student but showed great improvement.
[] Counselor Rec: No idea, I barely even know my counselor.
[] Interview: Nope

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Michigan
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: F
[] Income Bracket: 100,000-150,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Female engineer

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My passion for chemistry and interest in engineering really shined in my essays. Strong test scores and perhaps rec letter(s).
[] Weaknesses: Few EC’s, no volunteering whatsoever.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: A wide variety of factors-- I believe the primary factor was my essays. Without them, I would look like a robot. I think I described my love for science quite well. Strong test scores, of course, are a bonus especially to the college of engineering which puts more emphasis on grades than the other schools. In addition, being a female interested in STEM helped.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to U of Michigan, Rejected from Stanford, Columbia (lol no surprise here, literally spent 30 minutes on my essays), and UC Berkeley.

[/ul]**General Comments: **
I could not be any happier! Essays are very very important! Don’t be afraid to express what you love, be specific with anecdote(s), and write from the heart. Admission officers will certainly appreciate a genuine essay after reading so many essays that sound contrived and/or robotic. Your essays are what sets you apart from another similarly qualified applicant.
Nothing I did was just for college apps alone, you don’t need 300 volunteering hours or NHS or any of that. Just do what you want to do, enjoy high school, pursue your passions, and you will be rewarded.

I did Stanford EPGY once the summer after freshman year. I wanted to do it again because it was awesome, but it’s expensive.

Reflection
Strengths: Writing, Passion for each one of my many interests, GPA and rank
Weaknesses: Test Scores
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have NOO idea why any of these acceptances came for me. Not that I don’t think I’m capable, but there were so many other qualified applicants!
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Acceptances-- Carnegie Mellon, Duke (diversity likely), Johns Hopkins, UPenn, University of Maryland Full Ride Banneker/Key, Univ. of Pittsburgh Full Tuition, George Mason Full Ride, Drexel, American, UMBC, NYU Poly
Wait list: None
Reject: None!!

General Comments: It’s 2 AM and I’m still in awe after today. No rejections!! Although I got the diversity letter, it’s so much better getting the official admission letter. My advice to those who want it: be yourself. Be yourself be yourself be yourself. I can’t say it enough. I had to learn that colleges want you, not your scores or achievements. Remember that those numbers are only representative of what YOU can do, so if there is any other way for you to showcase your abilities, DO IT! Participate in activities that you are passionate about and activities that will allow you to learn, grow, and develop. Write your essays passionately. Allow someone who doesn’t know you well to read it. If it doesn’t evoke any type of emotion, then rewrite it. Lastly, apply even if you don’t think you’ll get in. I didn’t think I’d get into Cornell or get any of the scholarship offers and acceptances that I got because I doubted myself. This process allows you to grow and you learn a lot about yourself. You just may be surprised! That’s about it… Good luck!
