• Essays (rating 1-10, details):

  1. Personal Essay (7): The essay talked about my experience speaking at Girls State in the State House of Representatives. I do feel that I could have improved it by making myself sound a little less narrow minded, because I am not.
  2. Supplement (9): My supplemental essay to Cornell I think fixed the narrow minded issues of the other essay. I think it showed that though I know what I want to do, I love learning and want to explore as much as I can academically at Cornell.
    • Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
o Teacher Rec #1: (9) Ecology, Marine Science, and AP Environmental teacher. Also the sponsor for Envirothon and Green Schools Initiative and lead teacher of the Environmental program I was enrolled in. What I think made his letter unique was his reference to a letter we were all required to write introducing ourselves to him.
o Teacher Rec #2: (9) AP Language teacher. AP Language was a class I loved and thrived in. I also connected very well with this teacher, and I felt that she would be able to speak about me from a very different perspective than many other teachers because of my participation in class discussions and my love of writing.
o Counselor Rec: (5) I did not know my counselor well and coming from such a large school, our counselors were very overwhelmed. I was often very last minute on guidance deadlines and probably appeared a little flustered whenever I stepped into the guidance office which probably didn’t help my case.

Reflection
• Strengths: I have a lot of different interests, and wasn’t afraid to explore them in high school. I have a passion for what I plan to study at Cornell, and because it was one of my top choices, I knew a lot about what I wanted as a Cornell student. I was very specific in my essay. My very close relationships with my teachers made getting recommendations easier, and I think they were able to confirm that I truly love to learn. I really love government, my intended major, and I know I want to go to law school. With that said, I am going to college with the mindset of I want to enrich my mind in every way possible.
• Weaknesses: My GPA and SAT scores are good but not to die for. I don’t think rhetorically my personal essay showed my potential as a writer. I bit off a little more than I could chew sometimes, which you could see in my second semester Junior year performance.
• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I was accepted because I am well rounded and have very varied academic interests, making me a good fit for Arts and Sciences.
• Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: UMiami, UFlorida, William & Mary, George Mason, American U, Boston University
Waitlisted: Brown
Rejected: UPenn, Yale, UChicago, Georgetown
General Comments: Cornell looks for lots of different things it seems like. After all, the motto is “Any Person, Any Study.” Ultimately, there’s no sure recipe for getting into anywhere and that is especially true of Cornell.
