[] Additional Rec: The Peer Review my friend wrote me was excellent, quite touching, actually
[] Interview: Went average, the interviewer was obviously rushed to tend to some other engagement, only lasted 18 minutes tops
[/ul]

[] Why you think you were rejected: Underqualified
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: first school I’ve heard back from
[/li]

[/ul]

General Comments: I was born on campus at Dartmouth, I’ve loved the school since I was 6 months old and I’ve spent the better part of the last decade wanting, dreaming, of going back, if they’re not going to reciprocate that, then there’s nothing more to say.

Decision: DEFERRED

Objective:

SAT I (2110, but ACT was better)
ACT:34 (en35 ma36 re33 sc33, essay 10)
SAT II: 800 M2 / 620 Lit
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 6/(400ish)
AP (place score in parenthesis): Music Theory (4) Lit (4) Calc AB (5) USH (5) Chem (3-didn’t mention this one lol)
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc BC, AP Physics, AP German, AP Euro (1sem), AP US Gov (1sem), AP Lang and Comp, Hnrs Jazz, Hnrs Band
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Some pretty big awards, certifications, and was a competition winner for several foreign language, music and math events, but only regional (Midwest). I’ve never even heard of some of these national things! I thought this category would clinch the deal with Dartmouth

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): (I’m only listing leadership of this year- note my school suffered a budget cut so we don’t have many clubs) Pro-Life (president), Improv Club, Varsity Scholastic Bowl, NHS… used to be in an internationally known youth orchestra but I had a medical impairment-no more oboe
Job/Work Experience: Work for a manual labor company (yes I’m a girl… have to pay for my own college)
Volunteer/Community service: soup kitchen pretty often, also generic stuff
Summer Activities: 2011 principle oboist for a New York music program, 2012 exchange program in Germany
Essays: I really liked them. Wrote about how my disorder changed my outlook on life and why I want to work in what I do, and so on. I guess next to everyone’s superb essay-writing skills though, it was average. I kept it to 506 words though, kinda hurt.
Teacher Recommendation: I think pretty good but idk.
Counselor Rec: Don’t know.
Additional Rec: Well we needed two for teachers, didn’t feel right asking for one from my music programs (cause I had to drop them, again, medical complications)
Interview: Wasn’t offered one, which was kinda weird.

Other:

State (if domestic applicant): IL
Country (if international applicant): n/a
School Type: Public, won national awards (aka competitive)
Ethnicity: 2nd generation German
Gender: F
Income Bracket: middle
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I thought my disorder, kinda rare, but I guess Dartmouth doesn’t discriminate… so nothing :frowning: well actually I’m a beast at languages, knowing English and German near-fluently, and French, Icelandic and (basic) Chinese. I want to go into translation.

Reflection
Strengths: lolwut.
Weaknesses: need to retake SAT2 for sure. Class rank I wish I could help but my school is so competitive!
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My whole life I’ve failed. Why not now? (Whynot Zoidberg? Sorry I had to…)
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Yeah I didn’t hear anything, but I only applied to UW Madison and Haskoli Islands. Realllllllly wanted to go to Dartmouth, and I guess I dreamed a bit too hard.

General Comments:
Congrats to those who got in. Live out my dream for me. In retrospect… yeah no, I hoped for the best until the very end. Maybe things will turn around in April. If you’re looking to apply, make sure you write the best damn essay you can, do well on the exams… and so on. Dartmouth is a great school. Just don’t apply (more competition for me!)

Deferred. Feeling very bitter.

Accepted!??

Guys, guys, guys! Don’t get so down about all this. It’s just a school. The idea that any school is so qualitatively different from the others that you should consider your dreams dashed if you are rejected is just well-marketted hype. Life is still good. You don’t need Dartmouth for it to stay that way. Relax.

The end of the world has not happened just yet. >.>

wait honestly. how do you get the html working?

Please forgive my cheezy grammar. I am too happy to pay attention to what I am writing right now, but I have to say I am very very very lucky to be accepted, considering how amazing all the other applicants are this year. TO those who didn’t get in, please don’t lose faith. I know how you are feeling right now, but you are all insanely amazing applicants, and you will no doubt go to somewhere awesome. I wish you the best of luck!

Objective:[ul]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Environmental Club 9-12 (President 11-12), Organic Garden Club 11-12 (Founder), various stage crew positions for our Theater Company 9-12 (Officer 11, President 12), National Honor Society, Junior Class President 11. Also a bunch of other clubs that I joined for a year or two but didn’t list on my common app.
[] Job/Work Experience: None
[] Volunteer/Community service: I volunteer at our local nature center and organize kids from my environmental club to clean up there. Also I did a few projects there and helped with a study to document all the amphibian/reptile life.
[] Summer Activities: Nothing academic. I spent most of my summer fishing.
[] Essay: I wrote about the administrative difficulties that I ran into when I was trying to start up my organic garden. I rewrote it about 7 different times because so many of my teachers were looking at it and helped me polish it up. In the end I think it was one of the strongest parts of my app.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Both were probably really good, but I didn’t read them. I chose two teachers who knew me really well and are known to write awesome rec letters. My chem teacher sat down with me and had me talk about things that I’ve done outside of the classroom. Basically neither focused solely on my school smarts.
[] Counselor Rec: Good. My counselor knows me pretty well and made sure that she spent time on it.
[] Peer Rec: Excellent. I had one of my best friends write it, and she did an amazing job. It was basically three little anecdotal stories about me in school, socially, and also my love of nature.
[] Additional Rec: My principal offered to write one for me, and it was really personal and flattering.
[] Interview: Never contacted for one.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Public, about 1200 students
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: M
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None[/ul]
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays and recommendations all stood out I think.
[] Weaknesses: SAT scores? Although they say that they look at the highest equivalent score, so my SAT I probably didn’t matter anyway since I had a 35 ACT.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I tried to really reflect myself through my essay and I think my teacher recs and peer rec backed that image up. [/ul]
[/li]

General Comments: I always looked at College Confidential and saw all of these people with really great SAT and AP scores and published research get deferred or rejected at their first choice schools, and it made me really nervous. And obviously my scores are high, but not so much so that they’re nearly unattainable. So for anyone looking to apply for next year, don’t let your hopes be turned off by what you see in these threads. I think what’s most important is that you just communicate who you really are in your application.

[ ] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): going to compete in national ISEF

[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

  • varsity swimming (won bronze at junior African championship, played at junior national swimming team for two years)–> all before I turned 16
  • varsity crew (won 2nd place in a city-wide regatta, qualified my boat for nationals next month)
  • founded an art club+tech club back in high school
  • represented my country in a cultural exchange program in Istanbul.
  • campaigned at a youth movement (that had a lot to do with Arab spring)
[ *] Job/Work Experience: several part time jobs (diners & libraries)
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: did 1000+ hrs of community service, including an outreach program in rural Egypt (teaching little kids) and coaching (swimming) at my school.
    [ *] Summer Activities: had a 5-week internship at a software company
[ *] Essays: I thought they were pretty cool…my EC essay was about my first backpacking experience, and my personal statement was about the time when I traveled to rural Egypt and taught elementary school kids for six months and how that redefined what I stood for, and what my priorities should be.
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: economics teacher was pretty subjective. He talked about how I apply what I learn in classroom in my real life. Math teacher said that I am the only student he ever met who actually learns just for the sake of learning…
[ *] Counselor Rec: it almost made me cry…she talked about how I am so mature and how I barely waste any time. She literally said that people like me are the reason why she is a school principle!!!
[ ] Additional Rec: peer rec was horrible!! I still wanna chock my friend to death!!!

[ *] Strengths: sports (though I missed the recruitment round because I am the stupidest thing that has ever existed) and community service
[ *] Weaknesses: SATs, peer rec
[ ] Why you think you were waitlisted: my SATs are pretty low…and I think they might be waiting for RD so that maybe they could compare me with people from my region
[ ] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: none yet, I’m waiting for WPI…
    [ b]General Comments:
I really wanted to get in…but I also know it’s an ivy and even with perfect scores and a zillion hooks, nothing is guaranteed…I really liked Dartmouth, tho.
    Congrats to all accepted kids!!
And good luck to all fellow deferees and rejectees…I am really sure we’ll all end up at some cool school…

Have you thought about Middlebury College in VT? Midd has one of the best language programs in the country and it definitely has a rural feel to it if you’re attracted to Dartmouth’s woodsy atmosphere.

[ *] Summer Activities: not a lot, just volunteered and did hw and chilled
[ *] Essays: my friend whos a really great editor and write edited mine and everyone said they were great, all about how my lack of English proficiency at a young age led to my desire to study international relations and communicate better with others! Essays I personally think can make or break an application.
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: My Bio and AP Psych teacher, said it was the longest recommendation she’s ever written! I also teacher assisted for her and she’s the advisor for my photography club! And my English and AP Lang teacher who I had for two years and is advisor of International Relations Club. Perks of a small school are tight-knit student-teacher relationships!
[ *] Counselor Rec: Good i guess.
[ ] Additional Rec: My friend Hanna who I do a lot of clubs alongside wrote my peer rec and it was wonderful and included a lot of anecdotes : )
[ ] Interview: This really counts for nothing! I was interviewed yesterday, the day before decisions came out so it obviously doesn’t count. The interview was great though, he said I was a good fit for Dartmouth!

[ *] Strengths: 800 in CR, essay, GPA, very involved in school
[ *] Weaknesses: I was really scared that I came across as someone who does too much and isn’t interested in one or two specific fields but rather in everything especially since I would always say yes when people wanted me to do something or join a club and I felt my interests were too strtched out and didn’t relate to one another but I guess my fears were unfounded!
[ ] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was honestly so shocked I have no clue!!!

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think it was because my essay was about choosing to switch from the HS equivalent of Dartmouth to a school full of LAC-goers. Also, I’m far from the v. ambitious “work hard, play hard” Dartmouth stereotype.
[/li]

[li] Where else are you applying: LACs! Amherst, Williams, Bowdoin, et al.
[/li]

Just be yourself. You don’t have to have a billion extracurriculars or a perfect SAT/GPA to get in. Just focus on a few things and show them that you are really passionate about what you do.
