Official Dartmouth RDers 2014 thread!

Hey, ccprofile! Welcome. :)

P.S.: Congrats on the 100th post greyoranges! Wooooooooo!

Haha make sure to get it in on time! =P

Haha this thread has been so much fun. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing; I do have a real life outside of CC…kinda…sorta…hopefully.

I’m having my Dartmouth day tomorrow-I’m hanging out with both the current students I know in one day! Coincidence? YOU DECIDE!

Also, has anyone seen Avatar? I think I’m going tomorrow!

What else are you guys up to over break?

Haha I have a life too! I like to think so =] lol.

And oh that’s cool, I don’t know anyone in my school who went to Dartmouth… Dartmouth isn’t too popular in my school.

Haven’t seen Avatar, not my type of movie. I want to see Sherlock Holmes!

Welll, over break, I’ve been catching up on time with the fam, going out with friends, doing the crazy amount of winter work for school, doing some financial forms for schools, catching up on sleep… the usual.

Hahaha having a life = good times.

Dartmouth is a big thing at my school. One of their admissions officers graduated here in 2002. There’s probably like…8 people applying, so I’m really scared haha.

I saw Sherlock Holmes last night! It was really worth it, although quite different from the original.

I finished my common app essay today, which was nice. I’m currently on a Lost marathon, which is quite time-consuming. I’ll probably start on real homework on New Year’s Eve or something; I can’t quite wrap my head around Chemistry right now haha.

Haha, indeed! I enjoy checking this thread very much, although I too would like to believe (hope?) I have a life.

I’m not really sure how strong the Dartmouth interest is at my school. I know at least two people other than me are applying, but I’m not sure if there’s anyone other than us. I’m hoping all of us get in. :)

As far as break goes, I’ve been doing misc. homework, working on scholarship applications, but spending a huuuuuuge amount of time doing Project Euler. I don’t mean to sound like a robot advocating for it (I’m not, I swear! I’ve just mentioned it a few times on a few threads =P) but it really is quite cool and worth a look if you’re into math/programming.

On the more social side (so I don’t look quite so unbalanced and withdrawn ;)), I’ve been hanging out with some friends and I’ve also been meaning to see “Up in the Air” with some very good friends. Gah! It’s dawning on me that I only have one week left. Must… focus… and… get… scholarships… in!

Ooh can you elaborate of Project Euler? It sounds interesting from what you said before-what exactly do you do?

Do any of you other guys have something like that ^ that interests you? I’m more of a board game guy. I used to have (nerdy, I know) Risk parties with my friends, and they got pretty fierce!

[Project Euler](http://www.projecteuler.net)

Basically, the idea is to integrate complex mathematics and computer programming. The problems, in general, get more complex the higher you get. For example, the first problem requires you to compute the sum of all multiples of 3 and 5 under 1000, which is simple to any programmer who is familiar with the modulus operator (%), which returns the remainder between dividend and divisor (ex: when 5 is divided by 3, the remainder is 2. Thus 5%3 = 2, and in a similar fashion, because 6 evenly divides 3, 6%3 = 0. Not trying to condescend or anything if you’re familiar with the modulus operator. ;)). The problems become much more complex, however, and often, even when you have developed an algorithm which will provide a solution to a given problem, optimization is a consideration when numbers and computations become very large. For example, many of the problems deal with prime numbers, and as such, it is essential to develop an algorithm which determines whether a number is prime or not. However, while this is a challenge in and of itself, this prime-checker, so to speak, must down the line be streamlined so that it checks whether a number is prime not only accurately, but efficiently.

Er, yeah. That’s basically my (unnecessarily) long winded post on PE.

And, I’ve actually done the same thing! (but I’m kinda nerdy, so I guess I’m biased.) My friend didn’t have a risk set, so she made colored pieces and made a board herself. It was pretty amazing. We used to play a lot some years ago, but we haven’t in a while. Good times, though!

…and I thought I was special because I could complete a rubic’s cube…haha.

That sounds really interesting though, but also incredibly complex. I wouldn’t have any idea how to do it unless someone showed me =P. But seriously, it makes me happy when people are genuinely excited about academics and stuff, whether it be programming, like you, or poetry, like we demonstrated before. It gives me hope for the future of our generation-haha.

Maybe we can all play risk next year ;)

Haha, hey! You’re one step ahead of me =P. I can’t solve a rubik’s cube for the life of me.

Thank you! I’m fortunate that I know what my passions are and I think your musical ability is also something that’s pretty incredible. That’s of course, not to discount those who haven’t discovered what they really love. For some it just takes more time… that’s one of the great things about college.

Also, not that you necessarily are, but if you (or anyone here, for that matter) would ever be interested in something like PE, let me know. I can give you some great sources that would put you in the right direction or offer whatever help I can give myself (however limited that may be, haha.)

Oh, and, RISK PARTY 2010 WOOOOOOOOO

Haha I never played Risk before. And aah math just scares me so I couldn’t even read that Project Euler thing. It just reminds me of the research paper I need to do for Calc. =[

Awh I actually really like calc…but Project Euler is way over my head, although I would like to try it and see how terrible I am!

What’s your calc project? I have to do a writeup for my chem lab…wahhh. Oh well, on with the show!

And thanks for the music comment, Weezer =]

And congrats on reaching almost 3000 views, guys! We’re ballin’

i just submitted! yes!!

…however…i know i made two mistakes in the application. oh well, they’re not very important sections

As long as it’s not your name, you’ll probably be fine haha

Haha, yeah, no worries wg. I noticed two minor mistakes on my app as well. They happen, and colleges understand. No biggee.

Since the topic of movies came up in this thread, what are your guys’ favorites?

I just saw L.A. Confidential and thought it was great.

Others include:

Donny Darko, Igby Goes Down, The Usual Suspects, The Matrix, American Beauty, Spirited Away (well, most Miyazaki films, really), most things with Kevin Spacey… yeah!

Weezer, do I know you from USAMO? You strongly remind me of someone.

And hello Dartmouth-ers!
The wait continues :(

Hmm some of my favorites include…Saw, Slumdog Millionaire, Little Miss Sunshine, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Matrix, Pirates of the Carribean, Casino Royale, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Edward Scissorhands, Les Miserables, Bottleshock, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, American Pie, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, and now Avatar!

…and yes, this was taken off my facebook.
