being deferred sucks.
but i'm really surprised that so many highly qualified people were deferred (i was deferred from CoE).
Does anyone have any possible ideas or explanations as to why? And how soon will it be before we hear a decision - i really hope it's not til April.

I’ve heard that Michigan may just be trying to lessen the advantage given to EA applicants. I’m not sure, though.

I have no reason to believe that decisions will come before April. I’m not banking too hard on UM, though, since it isn’t my first choice and, as an out-of-state applicant, I likely won’t be able to afford it anyway.

This happens every year. “Highly qualified” EA applicants are deferred and most of them end up being accepted in the RD round. There are no answers to why, and it’s strange that everyone is so surprised considering this happens every year. The only known explanation for some of this is that, when it comes to in-state/out-of-state applicants, they come down very hard on OOS individuals during the EA round. UMich is a state institution, and they need to take in a great deal of in-state students. Taking in too many OOS EA applicants early on may complicate the process of doing so. They defer students as a precaution. As for other explanations, or for why qualified in-state students were deferred, there’s no telling, nor is there probably any overarching reason. The problems are most likely with individual deficiencies in the application, whether they be recommendations, essays, ECs, etc. Students who get accepted outright EA are the ones UMich know 100% they want. If they are only 95% sure, they’ll defer you.

As for how soon you’ll find out, don’t expect a final decision until at least February. While there is some chance of hearing before then, as I believe that does occasionally happen, it’s safe to assume you’ll hear between mid-February and the beginning of April.

Was there a correlation as to which deferral letter you received? I heard there were three of them.

Yeah, but I don’t think there’s a difference in terms of which one is better

Oh my poop deferral

Which deferral letter did you guys get?

i got the really mean one that asked to send new grades

^ Same here

Is that a bad thing? What were the other ones? That’s the one that I got

I got the medium one that wasn’t asking for the grades but wasn’t praising me and saying for a hope in continued strong interest.

why are they different though? I wanna call admissions and ask but I feel like they won’t give me a straight answer

I got the good one, hopefully they mean it :(

i feel like it’s really dumb to send out different deferral letters like man keep your opinion to yourself jeez

I think mine is the good one:
Dear ----:

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Engineering for Fall 2013. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, it is still good news. Your application is one of a group that remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early-April, 2013.

Please refer to the website [Information for Deferred Students | University of Michigan Office of Admissions](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred) for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward your fall semester or second trimester grades when they become available and be sure your U-M ID----- is on the material. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require.

Because you are in this select group, we hope your interest in Michigan continues, and we will keep you informed of our progress. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.

Sincerely,

Theodore L. Spencer

Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director

…

is anyone else really depressed about being deferred? this seriously sucks. but i havent given up yet…

@faiintx i literally cried like a baby when i found out haha. i was in my michigan pajamas and tshirt hugging my michigan pillow pet (don’t judge me, it was a gift). but i kind of got over it i guess. i wanna go to ross so even if i don’t get in i still have a chance to transfer into the business program after a year at rutgers (sigh)

i got yours too ^

yeah, the only reason i’m not completely destroyed is because i still have this gut feeling that i’ll get in…even if it means waiting another 4 months to find out if it weren’t for this forum, i think i’d go insane

my gpa isn’t so hot but everything else looked pretty good for me and even the admission counselors i spoke to told me i had a good shot of getting in, especially bc of double legacy

Yeah well people say we might get in around mid february so thats better.
There are even apparently some cases of people getting in before that/ or even days after…but i dont know how true those are.

As far as the letters go… so do they even make a difference/signify anything?
